The official start of the college basketball season is just days away, and after a year's COVID hiatus, we're back with the oldest, almost-continuous Titan prediction contest in the nation. Yes, it's time for the Seventh Nearly Annual Commissioner's Cup. 2020 winner Shags seems to have vanished, so it's a wide-open field this year. 2019 champion HS Scout says, "nothing in my life has matched the thrill of claiming the Commissioner's Cup. I didn't cross it off my bucket list--that was my bucket list." (He also said that after winning the cup in 2017.) Head Coach Mike Davis allegedly says, "The Commissioner's Cup competition is the single most important reason I took the Titan job. There's nothing else like it in college hoops." Says 2018 winner UD Baller, "Having my name written on the styrofoam Commissioner's Cup was unbelievable. I can scarcely drink inexpensive coffee without tearing up." Past winners: 2015: Livernois Magic 2016: Livernois Magic 2017: Commissioner*/HS Scout (Commissioner was disqualified since family members cannot win, with the prize going to Runner-up Scout). 2018: UD Baller 2019: HS Scout 2020: ShagsDC 2021: COVID 19 2022: Your Name Here! Remember, you can't win if you don't play. So make your picks for the questions below. All entries due by 9:00 p.m ET, Wednesday, Nov. 10 (before tip of the Wyoming game). You can send predictions to me privately or post them in this thread. At the end of the year, the Commissioner's Cup, a lovely styrofoam cup with the word "Champion" written on it in indelible magic marker, will have added to it the name of the winner, alongside the names of past champions). Oduro has alot of ground to make up for the bulk of us in these picks. Funny that nobody picked Akec to do shit and he's been a stud. 😁

I glanced at this to see who had Cleveland State winning the regular season title. Just me. Most folks picked Wright St. or the Titans.
The most pessimistic projection of the Titans’ W/L record after completion of the regular season was three games over .500 by hsscout1. He pegged UDM for a fourth place finish, everyone else forecast no worse than third.

And it's time for the results of the 2021-22 Titan Prediction Contest.
1. What will be the Titans final regular season W-L record (31 regular season games)? Well, the Titans only ended up playing 29 regular season games. And everybody was way off. Let's all pound it into our heads--the way to score points on this and the next few questions is to always be pessimistic. Not a single contestant predicted the Titans to finish below .500, but Scout was the most pessimistic, predicting a 17-14 record. Closest to the pin was worth 3 points; UD Baller and UDM Perry each picked up two points for an 18-13 prediction, and 4 contestants each got one point for 19-12 projections.
2. What will be the Titans final regular season conference W-L record (22 games)? Pessimism, pessimism, pessimism. Again, Scout had more pessimism than anybody else, though his 14-8 projection still overshot reality, as the Titans finished 10-7. But another 3 points for being closest to the pin gives Scout an early leg up on the competition. Baller also got 3 points for a 14-8 prediction; 5 people got two points for predicting 15-7, and another 2 got 1 point for 16-6 picks.
3. What place will the Titans finish in the conference regular season standings? The reality was 6th, but everybody in the contest had the Titans in the top four. Indeed, only Scout was so disloyal as to predict us for 4th--everyone else had 3rd or better. Disloyalty pays, and Scout picked up 3 more points.
4. How far will the Titans advance in the Horizon League Tournament? Three points for RogoBob, who had the Titans losing in the semi-finals. Everybody else picked the Titans to at least reach the final, even the pessimistic, disloyal Scout. Of course, in reality, the Titans went out in the quarters. 2 points for all those who had the Titans losing in the final, and 1 point--everyone gets a trophy--for those who projected a Titan tournament championship.
5. Which 5 Titans will start the most games? The Committee awarded 1 point for each correct choice, for a maximum of 5. The top 5, in reality, were Davis (29), Isiani (23), Akec (22), Harvey (19), and McAdoo (18). Everyone projected Waterman to be in the top 5 (he just missed with 17 starts), and no one predicted Isiani. Scout was the only person not to predict Oduro for the top 5. As we'll see, Akec and Oduro, combined, destroyed most people's predictions on the individual achievement part of the contest. In the end, no one got more than three correct, and several did worse. Those who picked up three points were PTC Titan, the Commish, Larry Titan, Rogo Bob, UDM Perry, Terry Tyler Fan, Scout, and RBJ.
So as we near the quarter pole, the top 5: 1. Scout 14 2. UD Baller 11 3. Larry Titan 10 3. USM Perry 10 3. Commissioner 10
6. Who will be second on the Titans leader in points scored per game? The Committee went with second this year, figuring predicting the Titans' leading scorer was just too darn easy. But it turns out predicting who would finish second was too darn hard--no one correctly guessed Madut Akec. In fact, only 1 contestant, UD Baller, predicted Harvey, who finished 3rd on the team in scoring, and no one predicted McAdoo, who finished 4th. The dominant pick was Waterman. Anyway, we scored this--and the next several questions--on a 3/2/1 basis--3 points for the correct pick, 2 for the next player in line, 1 for the player who was third on the team. That means two points here for UD Baller, with the rest of the field shut out. Front runner Scout can feel Baller's breath.
7. Who will be the Titans leader in rebounds per game? It was Akec (7.0), followed by Harvey (5.6) and Waterman (3.9)*. No one picked Akec or, somewhat surprisingly, Waterman. Prince Oduro was a hugely popular pick. Two points to Scout and UDM Perry, who picked Harvey.
8. Who will be the Titans leader in assists per game? It was Davis at 4.4, followed by McAdoo (1.8) and Johnson (1.7). I thought this question was a bit of a gimme, but apparently not--McAdoo and Harvey were both popular choices. Several people, however, correctly picked Davis for 3 points, and McAdoo was worth two. No one gave Johnson his props.
9. Who will be the Titans leader in blocks per game? The top three were Waterman (0.6)*, Akec (0.4), and Isiani (0.3), for 3, 2, and 1 point, respectively. UDM Perry and Scout scored 3. Again, Oduro was a hugely popular pick, and some went for Harvey, but no one predicted Akec or Isiani.
10. Who will be the Titans leader in steals per game? Akec (1.4), followed by Davis (1.0) and Johnson (0.9). As usual, no went with Akec or Johnson, but about half the field scored 2 points for Davis. McAdoo got most of the other predictions.
11. Who will be the Titans leader in field goal percentage (min. 5 attempts per game)? Once more, a bunch of Oduro picks, and none for the actual leader, Akec (50%). Then it was super close, with Davis at .4288 and Waterman at .4286. Just out of the money were Isiani (.441), but not quite enough attempts per game), McAdoo (.425) and Harvey (.424). Only UDM Perry got Davis for 2 points; PTC, the Commish, and Scout picked up a point.
12. Who will be the Titans leader in 3 point field goal percentage (min. 2 attempts per game)? Matt Johnson (.419), Isiani (.386), and Madut Akec (.381). Davis and Waterman were just off at .379 and .375. As usual, no one picked Akec, but props to Scout for going with Johnson, good for 3 points, and Baller for taking a flyer on Isiani, for 2 points.
At the half way mark, the top 5: 1. Scout 28 2. UDM Perry 20 2. UD Baller 20 4. Commissioner 16 5. Larry Titan 14
13. Who will be the Titans leader in free throw percentage (min. 2 attempts per game)? This was easy, even on a good free throw shooting team--everybody got 3 points. For the record, Harvey (.821), and Akec (.813) (it's always Akec) were second and third on the team.
14. Which Titans will score at least 25 points in a game this season, and how many times? Here the Committee awarded 1 point for each correct guess, minus 1 point for each incorrect guess. Only 2 Titans did this: Davis (12 times) and Akec (once). Several contestants scored points, with the most going to Scout (4) and Larry Titan (3). And lot of people incorrectly predicted 25 point games for Waterman and Harvey.
15. Which Titan will record the most double doubles? Again, a lot of wasted love for Oduro. The Titans who did it most were Akec (6 times), good for 3 points, followed by Davis and Harvey (3 times each), each good for 2 points. No one else on the Titans turned a double-double. Obviously, no one picked Akec, but Scout & Baller scored with Davis, and Terry Tyler Fan and Larry Titan with Harvey.
16. Which Titan(s) will make an all-conference team (first or second team all conference, all defense, or all freshman)? The Committee awarded 3 points for each correct guess, minus 1 point for an incorrect guess. Only Davis--first team--was honored, and only Larry Titan made that, and only that, prediction, for the maximum 3 points. Several contestants, however, scored 1 or 2 points.
17. Name Titans' biggest margin of victory and opponent: The Committee used 3/2/1 closest to the pin scoring, and did not count the UM-Dearborn game. So there were a possible 6 points here, 3 on each half of the question. PTC Titan, the Commish, and NCT Titan correctly guessed IUPUI as the victim, and came closest to the 24 point spread. UDFan1983 and Scout each scored 5 points on this one.
18. Name Titans' biggest margin of defeat and opponent: Same scoring as #17. No one guessed Wyoming (38 points) as the opponent, or Wright State (our second largest defeat, 31 points) or NKU (our third largest, 18 points). Baller got 3 points for being closest to the largest margin of defeat (he thought we'd lose to Louisville by 31), followed by Scout (28 points) for 2 points and Calihan Mole (26) for 1.
Into the Home stretch, its the same 5 contestants in the top 5, but Scout is threatening to blow away the field: 1. Scout 44 2. UD Baller 33 3. UDM Perry 28 4. Larry Titan 28 5. Commissioner 27
19. What will be the Titans' average official home game attendance? a. Under 2000 b. 2000-2499 c. 2500-2999 d. 3000 or more 3/2/1 Scoring. Lots of folks got 3 points for predicting under 2000.
20. What will be Titans' final NET rank? Again, pessimism wins the day. The Titans finished 237. Scout was closest, and even he had us at 165. Baller had 163, and RBJ 150. Titan loyalist PTC was furthest from the mark, at 64--a true Titan fan!
21. Who will play the most minutes from among Kyle LeGreair, Byron Ottrix, and Mohamed Sylla? LeGreair by a landslide, though there were some who picked both Ottrix and Sylla.
22. Who will play the most minutes from among Willy Isiani, Buay Koka, Madut Akec, Prince Oduro, Jordan Phillips, and Jeramy Shaw? In real life, it was Akec, Isiani, and--this might surprise--Oduro, in that order. In predictions, once again no one picked Akec. But some people finally scored points with Oduro, who was worth 1 point. UDM Perry, Scout, and RBJ got 2 points for picking Isiani.
23. Who will win the Horizon regular season title? We awarded 3/2/1 for CSU/PFW/ and NKU. Somewhat surprisingly, only Rogo Bob and Terry Tyler Fan picked CSU. No one picked PFW or NKU.
24. Who will win the Horizon League Tournament? It surprised me that not a single contestant picked WSU. The Commish was awarded 2 points for picking runner up NKU. Over half the field picked Detroit.
25. Who will win and what will be the final score of Oakland at Detroit on Wednesday, January 5? (This question is also the tie-breaker: First tie-breaker is winner, second tie-breaker is closest to final score). The Committee considered awarding points for picking Detroit, but ultimately did not score this question, since the game wasn't played and the tie-breaker wasn't necessary.
AND,
The final top 5 finishers (we'll spare everyone else the humiliation) 1. Scout 56 2. UD Baller 42 3. UDM Perry 35 3. Larry Titan 35 3. Commissioner 35
Most Loyal Titan Fan (to the Contestant who was most off the money, by predicting the Titans to do better than they did on questions 1-4, 20 and 23-24): NCT Titan.
Congrats to Scout, whose name will be added in indelible magic marker to the styrofoam Commissioner's Cup, along with past winners, and who becomes the second two-time winner of the Cup. Past winners:
2015: Livernois Magic 2016: Livernois Magic 2017: Commissioner 2018: UD Baller 2019: HS Scout 2020: ShagsDC 2021: COVID 19 2022: HS Scout

It's an honor - and I wasn't even going to enter this year!! (BTW, I was also co-winner in 2017, in addition to winning 2019 & 2022). Thanks to the Commissioner for again running the contest and for all he does here and to all my competitors for having unrealistically high expectations for our Titans . This is truly the highlight of my life - like winning the lottery twice!
