Practice time. Some of the Titan key contributors on the 2011-12 team were transfers including Chase and Eli.

This is a cool thread, Sam. Thanks for doing it. That was a fun time. My daughter was 11 and a fan. She even insisted on going to Reggie's visitation when he passed. Kirky (Karic) was with us. Strange, they both said he looked smaller. My only explanation to them was that Reggie was so full of life that his presence was huge. By the way, Rebecca is 20 now and a Junior at EMU.
Tom, I don't think anyone didn't like Reggie Hall.

On this date, February 18, in 2012... The Titans had a rare February non-conference game and came away with an 82-70 win over James Madison at Calihan. I believe this was one of games in the old Bracket Busters format, a feature I wish college basketball would bring back. Detroit took an 11 point lead early and led by seven at the break. The Dukes fought back and took a brief lead in the second but the Titans regained control. Donovan Foster hit a three pointer at the buzzer for the final margin. Coach Ray mixed up the lineup, starting Eli and Donovan in place of Doug and Jason. We put five guys in double figures, led by Jason with 19. Foster had 12, and Doug, Evan, and LaMarcus scored ten apiece. U-D improved to 17-12 in front of an official crowd of 2017. I believe this pic is from the James Madison game. Check out the facial expressions and reactions from fans in the background.

On this date, February 23, 2012...
The Titans dropped a road game to Cleveland State, 77-64. After a solid first half resulted in a six point Titan lead, someone nailed a lid on the basket after the break and the Titans only made five field goals in the final 20 minutes. No one played well for the Titans. Chase Simon had 17 and 10, but only shot 3-12 from the floor. Ray and Jason also cracked double figures.
U-D's five game winning streak came to an end, but better times were ahead.

On February 25, 2012...
The Titans bounced back from the loss to CSU by beating Youngstown State, 76-74. It was a close game throughout, but U-D took the win while shooting 65% in the second half. Chase led the way with 18 in one of his most efficient games of the year (5-10, 3-6, 5-6). Ray scored 15 and had six assists, while Eli, Lamarcus, and Doug had ten points each.
The Titans closed the regular season with a record of 18-13, 11-7. They finished by winning 9 of the final 11 games and gave the fans reason for optimism with the HL tournament approaching.
Go Titans.

On this date, February 28, in 2012...
The Titans opened up HL tournament play with a 80-71 win over Loyola Chicago at Calihan Hall. Detroit clamped down on defense in the first half and took a 34-23 lead at the break. The Ramblers put up a whopping 48 points in the final frame, but the Titans scored 46 to keep them at bay. Eli led the way with 20 points (6-6 from the floor), 6 rebounds, and two blocks. Chase had one of those games that really showed his talent, scoring 19 and coming up with four steals. Doug was in foul trouble and only played 27 minutes, but put up 18 points. Jason and Ray were off from the floor, combining to go 3-16, but they hit 14-14 from the free throw line. Official attendance was 1917 for the now 19-13 Titans.
The Titans late regular season surge got us the 3 seed and a home game, but it wasn't enough to avoid the daunting task of needing to win four straight games to take the conference tourney crown. We wouldn't see Calihan Hall again that season.
Go Titans!

On March 2, 2012...
The Titans won their second game of the HL tourney, putting a 93-76 beating on Youngstown State in Valparaiso. It was one of the best performances of the year for the Titans. We shot 60% from the floor and outrebounded YSU by seven. Ray's line sparkled: 22 points while shooting 7-12/6-6, 7 assists and 2 steals. Eli put up a double double. Lowe had 13 points in 18 minutes, and Doug also hit double figures. Really solid performance; the Penguins were solid team that year, finishing 10-8 in league play.
With the victory, the Titans hit the 20 win mark for the second time in three years. Eli went over the 1,000 point mark for his career.

On March 3, 2012...
The Titans turned some heads with a 63-58 victory over Cleveland State in the semifinals of the HL tournament. Detroit was led by Ray, who played one of his best games of the season. With his teammates combining to go 13 for 40 from floor, Ray hit 7-10 field goals and 11-13 free throws on his way to 26 points, while grabbing six boards and dishing out five assists. On defense, he chipped in with two steals and a block. Detroit also played excellent team defense, holding the Vikings to 36% overall and 23% from three.
The Titans had a 12 point second half lead, but a big run by CSU tied the game with 3:07 left. Detroit regrouped and took command, hitting 8-10 free throws in the last minute.
U-D improved to 21-13 on the season, and would next face Valpo on the Crusaders home court. Valpo blew out Butler earlier in the day in the other semifinal.
Go Titans.

On March 6, 2012... WE DID IT! The Titans completed the four game gauntlet of the HL tournament by defeating Valpo 70-50. Detroit dominated the second half, outscoring the Crusaders 46-23. The Titans trailed 31-25 in the second half before Detroit went on an 11-0 run to take the lead for good. Ray scored 7 points in that run. Jason hit a three pointer to make it 52-42 and the rout was on. Ray was exceptional in the tourney, and led the way with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. La Marcus had a 14/11 double double and Jason hit for 17 points. This game, however, was decided by the Detroit D. Valpo hit only 36% from the floor and 11% from three. The Titans also forced 18 turnovers. I remember watching this game on television and yelling like I was there. The way the Titans won the title made it all the more satisfying. They won three games at Valpo. They beat the Vikings and the Crusaders, two teams that had beaten the Titans twice in the regular season. And best yet, they won an NCAA bid on Coach Ray's birthday. It was a great night.
