Look UP. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for BA. I would even give him an interview if he applied for the AD Position because he could be good in that role (but would have to start as an Ass't AD somewhere first). As to President of the University, that's a ridiculous conversation. AND I AM SORRY IF GARABALDI WASN'T HIS USUAL FRIENDLY SELF WHEN YOU INTRODUCED YOURSELF TO HIM BUT HE'S NORMALLY VERY FRIENDLY AND ONE OF THE BEST PRESIDENTS WE'VE EVER HAD. ACCOMPLISHMENTS HAVE PROVEN THAT. DO I NEED TO LIST SOME OF THEM AGAIN? WE ARE IN A BETTER PLACE AS A SCHOOL (MUCH BETTER PLACE) NOW THAN WHEN HE CAME, AND HE HAS HAD MUCH TO DO WITH THAT. . I think he could be below average and still be one of the best we’ve had in awhile. I think we need someone who is exceptional! I think he waisted some money on the rebranding and I would love to follow that trail.

It's too bad we don't have the money to hire him as a sort of roving ambassador for the program and school, a role Archie Griffin has played for 40 years now with Ohio State. We could have invested the rebranding $ for an Ambassador and it would have had a positive rather than a negative result.

There are many young, hungry assistant ADs eager for a chance at an AD job, should the UDM position come open with the hiring of a new president who wants his/her own people in leadership positions. Western Michigan just hired one such candidate from my hometown.
We have problems seeking solutions, not insurmountable obstacles.

They never wanted to know what you thought about the University name for the study. They just wanted us to accept the status quo! They don't want us to think for ourselves. Just to go along with there decisions.

I like the idea of BA (not as a coach) working in the university in some capacity. He is a very charismatic guy that would definitely be a great guy to market us. He was very active on social media and would talk to anyone in person. I would have him be active in the city representing the University along with some sort of media roll. I would also not run or hide the issue in the past but use them as a tool to show how people can make mistakes in life and be willing to change for the good.

By way of explanation only - this is not an endorsement of the branding strategy. The branding effort was pushed by Dr. Garibaldi in order to try and maximize the $100 million capital campaign for the university as a whole. The university as a whole had been named the University of Detroit Mercy back when the merger occurred. At Gannon, when he was president there, Dr. Garibaldi's fundraising efforts were hampered by bad feelings from a similar merger when Villa Maria College was merged into Gannon, but its name was placed only on Gannon's nursing school. A large number of Villa Maria alumni did not like this loss of their identities and were resistant to those fundraising efforts. In fact, Dr. Garibaldi's experience in that merger was a major factor in why he was recruited and hired for us.
The issue in Athletics is whether our teams should be permitted to play as the Detroit Titans. The branding strategy is a top-down effort from the Trustees and our outgoing President. IMO, as to our Athletics program, Dr. Garibaldi learned the wrong lesson from the Gannon-Villa Maria episode because our historic athletics name "Detroit" now appears to make us just the Sisters of Mercy university located in Detroit - merely differentiating us from Gwynedd Mercy which is the Sisters of Mercy university located just outside Philadelphia, Mercy NY located in Dobbs Ferry and the Bronx, Mercy College of Ohio in Toledo, and Mercy College of Health Sciences in Iowa. Our brand makes it appear that Mercy College of Detroit became a university. IMO, this branding strategy subsumed the Jesuit heritage and resulted in alienating the larger body of alumni as opposed to the smaller body of alumni that Dr. Garibaldi faced at Gannon.
We will soon have a new president. Perhaps this person will recognize the disadvantages of the current branding strategy in Athletics and permit that department to emphasize its 100+ year Jesuit heritage. After all, it was the Jesuits who started women's basketball and other women's sports here. The AD reports directly to the President. And roving ambassador would therefore be constrained by the President's view of things that gets implemented by the AD.

Whoever the next AD is, they need to encourage our coaches to do stuff like this.

I hate that leprechaun. "The lexion of Catholic education" (or whatever the Mole called it) may have a bigger endowment, but I'll take Tommy Titan over that twit any day.

What the issue is going to be that's only going to get worse is we are looking at alums who are a decade out from starting undergrad with no connection to the University. I legitimately know less than 5 people younger than me who pay any attention to what udm does. So when people start calling for gifts from a lot of these alumni, what is there insensitive to give?

Fordham's new President may have a bit of adjusting, moving from New Orleans to NYC. Good luck to her.

Kirky, any ideas on how to get students engaged? I think a whole bunch of wins on the floor would help. But beyond that? I've long thought the Titans should provide free food and drink for Section 313 (but perhaps only in the second half). I don't know--there must be some ideas. What do you think?
