Another close loss in the learning period over the weekend as Tech dropped a close one at home to #25 Oklahoma. Had a crowd of 9,000 plus on hand for the home game, and the team gave a good effort. The Tech faithful are seeing signs of improvement this year, but the team has a real talent shortfall when compared to the Big 12 competition.

HUGE win tonight for the Red Raiders, as Tubby Smith's team upset #19 Oklahoma State 65-61. The home game for the Raiders was sold out with 15,000 plus fans, the first sell out since Bobby Knight was the coach. It's the second win over a top twenty team this year for the Red Raiders. They now are 12-11, 4-6, with more conference and overall wins than they had all of last year.
As the Tech fans say in Lubbock, "Get your guns up."

Big win tonight as Texas Tech gets a road win and payback against Oklahoma. The Red Raiders were up 16 at the half and got up twenty before OK rallied to cut it to three. Dusty Hannahs of Tech his a three pointer to push the lead to six, and Tech regained control, eventually building the lead back up to ten before winning by eight, 68-60.
Tech is much improved, with the same group of players that were there last year, expect for a two star freshmen point guard and a JUCO point guard. Tech's five conference wins are more than they have had the past two seasons combined. Tubby Smith is a heck of a coach.

Great win for Texas Tech, beating rival Texas on Tech Senior Day.
One of the biggest accomplishments for Tubby Smith at Lubbock this season has been winning back the student and general fan support. They averaged 13, 000 fans the last four home games.

Coach Smith picked up a nice piece for the 2014 recruiting class as JUCO shooting guard Dev Williams verbally committed to the Red Raiders this afternoon. Coach Smith used an old connection (an assistant coach at Williams's JUCO used to be a video guys for Smith) to build a relationship early and get an early edge in the recruiting battle. Williams had offers from Florida State, Southern Miss, and our own U of D Titans, among others.
Offense has been an issue for Tech this year and Williams is expected to help in that area.

Texas Tech's good news kept coming yesterday, when JUCO forward/center Justin Jamison verbally committed to the Red Raiders. Tech is losing most of it's size to graduation, and Jamison is a welcome addition.
Tech is hoping the good run continues. Tonight they play OK State in the first game of the Big 12 tournament. Also, a 2014 power forward prospect named Norense Odiase has Tech in his final two along with Georgia, and will be making his decision by the end of the week. Odiase is a 6-9/260 man child currently at the Elev8 Academy. Odiase went to high school in Texas before going the prep school route.

Tech's Big 12 tourney run was over before it got started. OK State beat the Red Raiders by 17 last night. After that little lull midway through the season, OK State got back on track and is looking more like the team that was picked to challenge Kansas for the conference title. Tech scored the first eight points of the game and it was a battle until Tech's best player, Jaye Crockett, hurt his knee and had to sit out most of the first half. OSU was up twenty three at the break. Crockett came back in the second half and Tech won the last frame by five, but it was too little too late.
At 14-18, Tech's season is probably over, but I guess they have a shot at a CBI bid. I'd like to see them keep playing just to get more experience for the returnees and more games for the seniors.

Despite the loss to OK State, Texas Tech did end the work week on a positive note. Norense Odiase, a 2014 power forward out of Elev8 Academy in Florida, committed to Texas Tech. Odiase's final two choices came down to Georgia and Texas Tech. Good pick up for the Red Raiders.

No post season for Texas Tech, but they did record six wins over teams that are in the NCAA tourney. OK, OK State, Baylor, Texas, Texas Southern, and Mount St. Mary. Not a bad first year in year one of the Smith era.

Jordan Tolbert is transferring to SMU. I don't get that one. No coaching change, not really a better program, he's a key part of the Tech rotation. That'll hurt

Jordan Tolbert is transferring to SMU. I don't get that one. No coaching change, not really a better program, he's a key part of the Tech rotation. That'll hurt Yes, that one hurt Tech. Tolbert always seemed to play below his potential this past season, but he was a double figure scorer and was expected to be the leader on the team next year. He suffered a tragedy two years ago when his father passed away. His family lives in Fort Worth, and SMU is in Dallas, which could be the reason behind his choice of SMU. SMU is raising a lot of eyebrows with their recruiting success since Larry Brown arrived. Tech also lost reserve Dusty Hannahs, a shooting guard who started at the beginning of the past season but eventually played his way to the bench. His free throw shooting will be missed, but he was very ineffective over the last half of the season. An Arkansas native, Dusty transferred to the University of Arkansas.

Kind of a cool bit of news regarding Texas Tech recruiting: Coach Smith has reportedly offered a scholarship to 2015 shooting guard Jordan Jackson out of Houston. Coach Smith is making an effort to develop connections in the fertile Houston area. Jordan is rated a three star guard by ESPN.
The cool thing about this story is that Jordan's mom is women's basketball legend Sheryl Swoopes, who starred at Tech. She remains active in Texas Tech athletics. It would be a nice to see Jordan follow his Mom's path to Lubbock.

Texas Tech scored a huge recruiting coup today when 2014 center Isaiah Manderson committed to the Red Raiders. Manderson is a 6-10 center who originally signed with Oregon State. He was released from his NLI after the OSU head coach was fired, and then it took a while for his academic clearance to take place. Manderson was a three star recruit on Scout, Rivals, and ESPN, and had multiple high major offers. At the end, it came down to Texas Tech, Oregon, Temple, and Cleveland State. He visited all but Oregon over the past two weeks and committed to Texas Tech today. Manderson is reportedly eligible to play in 2014, and hopefully that is the case. Tech could use him this year. This finishes off a solid class for Tech, with five freshmen all rated as three star recruits, and two JUCO players. They have a lot of work to do building chemistry, but they made a definite talent upgrade. collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/08/15/texas-tech-adds-late-2014-commitment-to-its-front-court/
