Kind of a cool bit of news regarding Texas Tech recruiting: Coach Smith has reportedly offered a scholarship to 2015 shooting guard Jordan Jackson out of Houston. Coach Smith is making an effort to develop connections in the fertile Houston area. Jordan is rated a three star guard by ESPN. The cool thing about this story is that Jordan's mom is women's basketball legend Sheryl Swoopes, who starred at Tech. She remains active in Texas Tech athletics. It would be a nice to see Jordan follow his Mom's path to Lubbock. Jordan Jackson became the first commit of the 2015 class for Coach Tubby Smith today, committing during his official visit this weekend. Jackson is a three star guard who averaged about 19 points per game as a junior. He is Coach Smith's first recruit from the fertile Houston area. Jackson will be following in his mother's footsteps as a Red Raider.

Texas Tech has their kick off event for the basketball season tonight. It features the usual activities: Autographs, three point contest, dunk contest, scrimmage, and more. Two recruits are on campus for official visits. Tech would like to get a commitment from at least one of them. c There may be other recruits on campus for unofficial visits, but Tech is so isolated out there in Lubbock, that they don't get the number of unofficial visits that a lot of high major programs get. Tech is expecting up to 10,000 fans for tonight's festivities. http://instagram.com/p/uQqkqlHy37

Texas Tech had a good weekend. They had a successful kick off event, although they fell short of their 10,000 dream goal. They reportedly had 5,800 in attendance. They also got a commitment from the guy who was probably their top target in the class of 2015, shooting guard/small forward CJ Williamson from Florida. CJ's listed as a three star recruit, and had a very impressive offer list. Clemson, Missouri, Virginia Tech, and Texas Tech were the last four schools he was considering. He had a visit scheduled to Clemson, but then cancelled it. He visited Missouri in September, and had scheduled a visit with Virginia Tech for next weekend, but committed to Texas Tech on Saturday. With Williamson and previous commit Jordan Jackson, Tech has filled the two openings it will currently have for the class of 2015. Much like the Detroit Titans, they can concentrate more fully on 2016, but will also keep in touch with other 2015 recruits in case of unplanned attrition. Williamson is the third commit in the past two Texas Tech classes who is from Florida. Not sure if that's a coincidence or if Coach Tubby Smith is cultivating a pipeline from the Sunshine State to the Lone Star State. Here's an article on CJ's commitment to Texas Tech. hoopniks.com/texas-tech-strikes-with-fla-guard-c-j-williamson/

Texas Tech put out a cool youtube video as an accompaniment to their media day.
Lots of questions about Tech this year and most publications are picking them as last in the Big 12. Coach Smith and the team seems confident, however.

Tech lost last night to LSU 69-64 in a game that was one of the worst officiated games I ever saw. LSU benefited from real home cooking throughout the second half and overtime, including a really bizarre five seconds call when Tech had the ball up four with less than a minute left. Tech was up 12 at the half, and in the first two minutes of the second half, they were called for six fouls. I almost never blame the refs for a loss, and Tech certainly made their own mistakes, but the refereeing was very one sided in second half and overtime.
Still, it was a promising performance for a young team. Tech started three freshmen and a sophomore last night and played very well for the most part. Coach Tubby Smith has them on the right track.

As Tubby Smith continues to try to resurrect the Texas Tech program, the Red Raiders overcame a 19 point deficit with 13 minutes left to beat Air Force yesterday. It's the classic, good news/bad news situation. The good news is you came back from 19 down to win. The bad news is, you were down 19 to Air Force. Big game for Tech on Wednesday when they take on Auburn. scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400585712

Texas Tech beat South Carolina State last night by the score of 101-39. It was that perfect storm of everyone on on Tech being hot at the same time, and nothing going right for poor South Carolina State.
