Texas Tech got a BIG pick up today when Shawntrez Davis announced he had signed with the Red Raiders. Davis is a 6-9 power forward from Georgia who had multiple high major offers. His eligibility isn't fully settled; he reportedly needs a higher test score. Whether he is eligible in 2016-16 or needs to redshirt, Davis is a major signing for Coach Tubby Smith. I can't imagine how hard it must be to recruit talent to Lubbock, Texas. Lubbock is so isolated it's a seven hour drive from Dallas, which is the closest major City. Bad news for Tech. The highest rated recruit in their 2015 class, is academically ineligible. He's probably going the JUCO route, which lessens the chances for Tech to retain him. collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/2015/07/report-three-star-pf-shawntrez-davis-does-not-qualify-for-texas-tech.html/

Texas Tech is on their foreign trip to Canada. They beat McGill University by a final of 54-46. McGill lost by twenty to Valparaiso but was much sharper today in their second game. Tech played everyone, including walk ons.

Texas Tech had a pretty good trip to Canada. Went 4-0, improved each game, came back healthy. Also got to see a few players in action who are recovering from injury.
In game three they beat Carleton, who beat Wisconsin two years ago and split two games with Baylor last week. Today they finished with a blowout win over Ottawa.

Texas Tech closed out their Pre-season with their second exhibition game, a 91=74 win over West Texas A&M . Good news for the Red Raiders: Two of the three guys they have recovering from knee injuries have been able to contribute and play well in both exhibition games. The third player, Justin Gray, is still working his way back to a level where he can contribute and build on the promise he showed as a freshman last season before he got hurt. www.texastech.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/111015aaa.html

Texas Tech finished the Puerto Rico Tip Off with 2 wins and 1 loss after their emphatic win over Minnesota, 81-68. Dev William, whom the Titans had recruited, scored 21 points to lead the Red Raiders. Tubby Smith would never say it, but you know he took extra gratification out of beating the team that fired him previously. It's interesting to see the trajectory these two teams have taken since Smith was fired. The Gophers definitely did not want to lose this one. espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/recap?gameId=400853311

Texas Tech scored a huge recruiting coup today when 2014 center Isaiah Manderson committed to the Red Raiders. Manderson is a 6-10 center who originally signed with Oregon State. He was released from his NLI after the OSU head coach was fired, and then it took a while for his academic clearance to take place. Manderson was a three star recruit on Scout, Rivals, and ESPN, and had multiple high major offers. At the end, it came down to Texas Tech, Oregon, Temple, and Cleveland State. He visited all but Oregon over the past two weeks and committed to Texas Tech today. Manderson is reportedly eligible to play in 2014, and hopefully that is the case. Tech could use him this year. This finishes off a solid class for Tech, with five freshmen all rated as three star recruits, and two JUCO players. They have a lot of work to do building chemistry, but they made a definite talent upgrade. collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/08/15/texas-tech-adds-late-2014-commitment-to-its-front-court/The coup that Tech scored on the recruiting trail with Isaiah Manderson has come to a bad end. Manderson, apparently homesick and unhappy with playing time, is leaving the school and transferring. It's really a weird time to do it, but maybe he was just really unhappy. It cost most casual observers by surprise (including me) when it was announced he was considering leaving over the weekend. He seemed to be a willing part of the future. That's a big blow to Tech. The team was already short on big men. 2015 power forward signee Shawntrez Davis couldn't make it academically and went the JUCO route, and of course PF Justin Jamison was kicked off the team last year for a violation of team rules. redraiders.com/filed-online/2015-12-01/manderson-leaves-tech-mens-basketball-program#.Vl4hI3arTIX
