I know Tom Izzo has his detractors among the Titan faithful, but the man can coach. Today, MSU went to Ann Arbor and beat 7th ranked Michigan 77-70. The Spartans are missing two of their best three players, Nick Ward and Josh Langford, and Kyle Aherns missed significant time today with a back injury. UD Jesuit Cub Cassius Winston was the MVP of the game, racking up 27 points, eight assists, and 2 steals. He was 13/14 from the line.
The rematch is March 9 at Jenison Fieldhouse, I mean the Breslin Center.

Michigan State defeated Michigan in East Lansing last night, 75-63. As the headline in the Freep states, "Michigan State wins the Big Ten title, and it's because of Cassius Winston". Winston only played 12 minutes in the first half because of foul trouble, but the Spartans held it together and only trailed by six at the break. Winston took over in the final stanza, and finished with 23 points and seven assists. Xavier Tillman scored 17 for MSU and Kenny Goins grabbed 16 rebounds. Izzo's team had a 25-4 run. Michigan played without Charles Matthews. Michigan State played again without Josh Langford and Nick Ward. MSU ties for the regular season crown with Purdue. Izzo has a bunch of Big Ten titles, but this one must feel special. I can't imagine anyone would have predicted them being able to win the conference with the injuries that they have had. On Sunday, the Spartans big weekend continued, as three star power forward Julius Marble verbally committed to MSU for 2019. The Texas kid picked up a lot of high major interest during his senior season, and had offers from the Big Ten and Big 12, among others. Looks like one of those solid four year contributors. www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2019/03/09/michigan-state-beat-michigan-because-cassius-winston/3118979002/n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2019/julius-marble-208425

Cassius Winston named Big Ten Player of the Year. Anyone else getting that would have been a robbery.

Very fan friendly, I've seen him interact with the public with no cameras around and I understand why he's such a great recruiter. I think he flips a switch during games and turns in to a foaming at the mouth lunatic.

It's not unusual to find him visiting local barbershops or diners in the area, just to keep his connections to the area. But, yeah, during games he turns into a maniac.

Freshman Foster Loyer scored 14 points off the bench in the Spartans win over Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament. Good sign for the future for MSU. If Loyer can be an effective rotation player for MSU next year, it answers some questions for the 2019-20 season.

After some time to think about it, I still think the Spartans got jobbed by the selection committee. I think they should have gotten the #1 seed instead of Gonzaga. Spartans finished 28-6, with a share of the Big Ten regular season title, and the conference tournament championship. The non-conference slate for them included a loss to Kansas and a loss at Louisville, along with wins over UCLA (when they were playing decently),NCAA tourney team Florida at Florida, and Texas. The Spartans went 16-4 in a conference with eight teams that made the NCAA and two that made the NIT. All this with Josh Langford missing 21 games and Nick Ward missing 5.
Gonzaga has a glitzy 30-3 record, but their claim to fame is a win over Duke. They only had one other win in the non-conference to a team that is going to the NCAA tourney, and that is Washington. And they got spanked by St. Mary's in the conference tourney.
If you are into the new metrics the Selection Committee uses, like "Quad 1" wins, the Spartans had more Quad 1 wins than any team in the country. Granted, I am a Spartans fan, but I don't see how the Zags deserved that #1 seed over MSU. To the credit of Izzo and the players, they aren't harping on the slight, but focusing on the tourney.
First up for the Spartans, Bradley in the first round.

I agree Sam MSU did get the short end of the stick, Izzo is a good coach, hopefully he doesnt have another brain fart like he did last season and play a grad transfer (Ben Carter) over the #4 pick in the draft (Jaren Jackson) during crunch time.

The Spartans looked worn out in the opening round of the tourney against Bradley. I would not be shocked to see them really struggle against Minnesota today.

The Spartans looked worn out in the opening round of the tourney against Bradley. I would not be shocked to see them really struggle against Minnesota today. Well, the Spartans struggled for a few minutes in the second half, but mostly dominated the Gophers on their way to a twenty point win. I continue to be impressed by how good Winston is. In the second half Minnesota cut the lead to 9 and had all the momentum before Cassius basically shut them down singlehandedly with seven straight points. The kid is a winner. Next up, LSU. This is a pretty good article chronicling the Spartans road to the conference regular season crown, the conference tournament title, and the Sweet Sixteen. www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/sports/college/michigan-state/spartans/2019/03/25/michigan-state-basketball-ncaa-tournament-cassius-winston-injuries/3269442002/

Cassius Winston named first team AP All American. Well deserved.
The Spartans took care of LSU and Duke to make the Final Four, which didn't seem likely when Langford went out for the season and Ward, Aherns, and McQuaid all missed games due to injuries. It has been a masterful coaching job by Tom Izzo and an amazing run by Winston. The team got a huge lift in the LSU game when freshmen Gabe Brown and Aaron Henry combined for 35 points. That bodes well for the future, too. The Spartans face Texas Tech in the Final Four Saturday night and are 2.5 point favorites.
