Majerus did apply and interview but he didn't want the job. So in the end he was not an option. Did the Titans offer him the job? Did he turn it down? Majerus was an assistant at Marquette. Hank Raymonds was then Marquette's coach and AD. Raymonds told Majerus that he was planning to retire as coach in 2 years and that Majerus would get the head coach job. So, Majerus decided to remain at Marquette. The connection to Detroit was through his father who was the secretary-treasurer of the UAW. Sicko was your quintessential local ties/top assistant coach hire. He had coached RO Shrine HS to the city and Catholic League championships. And those teams had a lot of success under him. He was also a top assistant at UM. He hired a staff of all local coaches like Charlie Coles. He brought in several transfers like Greg Wendt and Stretch Carter. And that staff recruited locally and the rest of the State very well for a few years until budget constraints prevented Sicko from making further improvements. These rating services always favor the known over the unknown. Most of the people rating the league don't know any more about the players than us. So, "these experts" will defer to the known players. Milwaukee was a case in point for the past 2 seasons. When Baldwin Jr was the recruit, he was going to lead them to the championship and be POTY. Then, when Lundy brought in a group of players that were small contributors at their previous schools or JUCOs, "the experts" picked Milwaukee 8th or 9th last year. But Rand ended up as HL DPOTY. Freeman was a very good scorer. And the Panthers ended up contending for the title. This year, we are in a similar position. The only knowns are Kyle and Marcus. To the general public, Stone remains a "maybe" because we have not yet published our roster. You can win the HL with 3 or 4 good performers plus 3 or 4 decent substitutes. Also, you need good fortune on the health/injury front. You can win with a decent big who is 6'7" or 6'8". Again this year, there is no HL team with such extraordinary talent that they cannot be beaten. This will be our first team in 5 years without Antoine. That changes a lot about how we will play. Out of the 13 new guys on the roster, we need about 5 of them to step up and contribute solid minutes. Official practice begins next week. It will be interesting to see what style and how well they play now that AD is gone.

So, Majerus applied and interviewed for the job but withdrew from consideration before we offered the job to anyone? I'm just trying to get an idea of the timeline. In addition to being a super nice guy, Coach Sicko looked to be a great hire on paper, for the reasons you listed. He hired a good staff and got some good recruits in what was a really great time to be recruiting players from Michigan. Also had a few good holdovers on the McCarter team he inherited. Unfortunately, outside of that magic night in February 1985, things never came together. And it wasn't budget issues that were the problem. I saw those teams up close and personal and knew several players. I hate to say it, but that was some bad basketball. The fact that we have seen several transfers blossom and outperform their previous play once they got to Detroit is a reason for optimism. The fact that we had three guys like that last season to go along with the second leading scorer in college basketball history and still finished with a losing record is a reason for pessimism. I have no idea what to expect from the 2023-24 Titans, but I'll be cheering them along.

At that time, Majerus was being mentioned as a candidate for a lot of coaching vacancies - not just ours. The story was that Raymonds put a stop to his job searches by promising him the HC spot when Raymonds retired in 1983. One year later, he did succeed Raymonds as head coach at Marquette. Three years after that, he left Marquette to become an assistant for the Bucks. I do recall specifically that in 1988, there was a group of Titan Club members that wanted us to try and hire him to be the new coach to replace Mulroy.

Would have been interesting to see how he would have fared here in the 80s.

Everything looked good with the Sicko hire, I guess he was missing some pieces to be a successful college coach.

My issue of Lindy's College Basketball Preview arrived today. As reported previously in this thread, the Titans are picked 10th in the 11 team HL, beating out only Green Bay. And that tenth place prediction came when the Titans were expecting to have Fuller, Tovar and Coleman.
In an interesting note, the writers apparently thought that Luther Muhammed, a guard previously with Arizona State and Ohio State, was going to be on the roster. Not sure what gave them that indication, but he is mentioned prominently in the Detroit preview. On paper, he would have been a nice pick up. Averaged 7 points per game in two years as a starter at Ohio State before making the move to ASU and regressing in every area on his way to the bench. Doesn't look like he's on anyone's D1 roster this season.

I do recall specifically that in 1988, there was a group of Titan Club members that wanted us to try and hire him to be the new coach to replace Mulroy. The February 17, 1982 Varsity News, in a column by one Tom Buysse, reported that Majerus was "very interested" in the job, but that AD Kinsman "wants a local coach." It continues, "He has the support of Al McGuire and of some of the richest, most-influential U-D alumni. Kinsman would have to be thinking long-term to hire Majerus, as he probably would have a tough time bringing any recruits in this year." Of course, long-term thinking has long been in short supply at Livernois. However, a piece the next week by Kenn Adamcyzk says that Majerus is "fading fast" as a candidate, and quotes Majerus saying ""I really wouldn't consider anything until season ends. I'm not actually seeking the job." But of course, that's the kind of thing candidates often say when they're trying to get their current team ready for the NCAA tournament. The other hot candidate was EMU's HC, former Titan star Jim Boyce.

They said that his medical redshirt for the 2020-21 season at AZ State counted as his 5th year played. The NCAA's decision was appealed, but it would not change its mind. His commitment here to play as a grad transfer was not announced because it depended upon him getting a favorable ruling from the NCAA.

The NCAA seems to be finally cracking down and enforcing their many rules and regulations. Although it may hurt the Titans this year with potential Fuller and Tchili decisions, it will be a step in the right direction for future seasons.

I don't understand this because the 2020-21 season didn't count against anyone's eligibility. The NCAA's position is that the redshirt was the same as playing in 2020-21. It makes no sense because Luther redshirted before the NCAA announced the free Covid year. In other words, even though Luther was a qualified grad transfer, he had no eligibility left. Under the NCAA's convoluted system, he would have been better off not redshirting and then getting hurt in Game #1 of 2020-21.

I miss the days when there was a reasonable level of certainty about whether or not a player would be eligible. You had four years to play, although a redshirt year meant you could have five years to fit those four in. Transfers meant you had to sit a year, without exception, but that wasn't seen as an undue burden for either the player or the team. JUCO guys got two years, and usually finished their D1 career at their first D1 stop. I miss those simple times when the NCAA rules were pretty clear, with little gray area, and you weren't depending on the inconsistent way in which the NCAA grants waivers. A guy like Luther M probably would have been a nice player for the Titans. Same with PJ Fuller. I would have felt really good about the backcourt with both of those guys on board. Both their fates rested in the hands of the NCAA, however, and that's not a good place to be. The end of blanket waivers might cause a course correction in college basketball. If high major players struggle at their current school and want to transfer, they should probably strongly consider dropping down a level, if their goal is to maximize their impact on a game. On the other hand, it's hard to give up that "high major to NBA" dream, so I expect that we'll continue to see paths like the ones Luther and PJ took. People don't really pay attention to the cautionary tales.

I'm old, but I miss and remember when an HS star, went on to star in the area college, and then the area NBA team had territorial rights to that player. So fans got to follow the player.
from start to finish.
But I also liked the 10-cent scorecard and pencil at baseball games, so fans could keep track of the X's and O's.

The NBA hasn’t had territorial rights since the 1960s.
