CSU has a couple of little-used bench players leaving the program. Backup forward Jonothan Janssen (37 minutes on the year) is leaving, as is 6-9, 260 lb. center Aaron Scales (1.4 ppg, 1.5 rpg), who just never developed. There has been some rumor of freshman Jeron Rogers, from Farmington, leaving, but he has yet to ask for a release.

Four of the top unsigned players in Ohio are Markell Johnson, Frankie Hughes, Tervell Beck, and Maishe Dailey. Johnson, a 6-0 pg, is a 4 star recruit with ESPN, Scout, and Rivals. He has offers from Florida, Cincinnati and many others. He's one of those guys (I still don't understand this) who had been class of '17, but is talking now about signing with Class of 16. Three weeks ago he announced (another thing I don't quite get, HS kids making such announcements) his final 5 as Ohio State, Louisville, NC State, Virginia Tech and Cleveland State, although this week he said he did not have a top 5 and was keeping all options open. He did take an unofficial visit to CSU last week. Frankie Hughes, a 6-5 sg, signed a letter of intent to play for Louisville last fall. Last week he was released from that LOI. In the fall he chose Louisville over Minnesota, Wisconsin, and St. Joe's. He has an offer from Cleveland State. Daily is a 6-6 sg who previously signed with Rutgers but was released from his LOI this month after the coaching change. Tervell Beck is a 3 star, 6-6 small forward. His final 5 are Pitt, UNLV, Dayton, Kent State, and Cleveland State. Northeast Ohio Recruits, an NCAA approved scouting service in Ohio, claims that the 4 have decided to attend the same school. What school keeps appearing on their lists? How many power conference schools still have 4 scholarships to be filled (like CSU does)? If Gary Waters can pull this off, CSU will be back in business in an instant. Markell Johnson announced he was re-classifying to the class of 2016. He has to take three summer classes to do it, but he's planning on playing in college in the Fall. www.cleveland.com/hsrecruiting/2016/05/east_tech_junior_guard_markell.html

Frankie Hughes, though, signed with Missouri in the April signing period. So CSU won't get all 4, if they get any.

It appears that Andrew Yates, Cleveland State's top assist man and #3 scorer last year (9.1 ppg) will forego his senior year and look to play pro ball outside the U.S.

It appears that Andrew Yates, Cleveland State's top assist man and #3 scorer last year (9.1 ppg) will forego his senior year and look to play pro ball outside the U.S. So apparently Yates couldn't get an offer to play overseas. Not even in Britain or some other place with bad basketball. That's sad. But having hired an agent, he's out of the NCAA. So he has resurfaced on the roster of tiny Benedictine College, an NAIA school in Atchison, Kansas. Benedictine is a personal favorite. It's one of the Catholic schools I periodically give to, and it produces a lot of priests. I spoke on the campus in 2004 and 2008, and it was the #2 college choice one of my daughters. Historically they were a small college power, with a couple NAIA national championships in the 1960s. After several down years, they went to the NAIA National tournament in 2014 and 2015, but slumped to 15-14 last year. I would think Yates will be a star at that level.

Cleveland State moves on from the Gary Waters era and hired Dennis Felton as coach. I don't know enough about him to say whether it is a good or bad hire, or an step up from Waters. We'll see. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Felton

Verbal Commits posted that Rob Edwards is leaving Cleveland State. Big loss, at least talent-wise.

Problem child? Doesn't fit into new coach's plan? Coming home to Oakland or Detroit?
