Valpo got a potentially nice transfer yesterday, E. Victor Nickerson from Charlotte. Nickerson didn't do a lot for Charlotte but he was a regular member of the rotation, playing 30 games each of his freshman and soph years and averaging over 15 minutes as a frosh and over 22 last year, with 5.8 ppg and 2.6 rpg. He was a highly rated recruit out of high school, including offers from Oklahoma State, Florida State, DePaul, Colorado and Wichita State, and a top 100 ranking from some services.
Will sit out 2013-14 as a transfer, then have two years of eligibility.

Valpo takes a bit of a hit as Clay Yeo, a member of their highly touted freshman class last year, decides to transfer - to Bethel College, an NAIA school. This is an odd one. Yeo battled some health issues but still had a respectable freshman year, averaging 4.1 ppg in just under 13 minutes. His best game was probably in February against Oakland, when he played 25 minutes and scored 12 points, including a game winning three at the buzzer. He was recruited as a 3 point specialist, and he hit on 46% last year from behind the arc. He played 28 minutes and scored 9 points in Valpo's CIT loss to Columbia. The official announcement says Yeo wanted to be closer to home, but he was pretty darn close at Valpo and Bethel is only about a half hour closer. No sign of discipline or academic issues.

Wow, big (literally) recruiting win for Valpo as they get a commitment from Derrick Smits of Zionsville, IN. He's the son of former Pacer Rik Smits, and he measures out at 7-0, 230. ESPN, Scout, and Rivals all list him as a three star recruit. Looks like he has the potential to be a force in the HL. Valpo must be feeling good. Three star seven footers usually go high major. verbalcommits.com/players/derrik-smits

His father, remember, played at Marist, and perhaps helped his son realize you don't have to go to the biggest name school that offers to have enjoy college and have a successful pro career.

Valpo picked up 8 points in the AP top 25 poll this week. That would put them tied for 34th overall, although such low vote totals are readily prone to distortion, which the AP doesn't rank below the top 25. A Valpo that wins out could quite well crack the top 25.
They also got 8 points in the Coaches' poll, the 35th highest total.

They get to play in Columbus, which is nice for their fans. Using the "S-Curve," it would appear that Maryland is the last of the #4 seeds, nut personally they'd probably be my last choice to face among the four #4 seeds. If Valpo can get by the Terps, the second round game - Buffalo or West Virginia - is, I think, very winnable. Then it would presumptively be Kentucky.
The Horizon desperately needs a couple win shares this year - this is the last year the conference gets wins shares for Butler's first Final 4 run.
