Hard to believe stat: With the 73-70 win over Rutgers Thursday night, DePaul has won 5 of the last six games they've played against Big Ten competition.

DePaul moved to 8-1 with a victory over Louisville. That breaks a streak of 10 straight wins in the series for the Cardinals.
DePaul is showing some very positive signs in the first year of a new coach and a bunch of new players on the roster. Good start to the season.

The Blue Demons currently sit at 12-10, 3-9 in the Big East. However, I actually see some positive signs this season, the first under Coach Stubblefield.
DePaul didn't play a super tough non-conference schedule, but they do have wins over Louisville and Rutgers. There's been an almost complete rebuild of the roster, with transfers mostly, so there have been some chemistry issues. What has really hurt has been player availability. On January 5, with the record at 9-3, leading scorer Javon Freeman Liberty got hurt and has not returned. His 21 points and 7 boards are missed. Grant-Foster, a transfer from Kansas, was expected to start all year but was lost for the season after being hurt in the only game he has played. Ahamad Bynum, the top recruit for the class of 2021, is taking a redshirt year after clearance issues with the NCAA. Bynum was a four star, top 100 player out of Chicago, just the type of player that DePaul fans hope to land. He, like Grant-Foster, is expected to return to DePaul next season.
After dropping 7 of 8 in the aftermath of Freeman-Liberty's injury, the Demons have won two in a row, an impressive win at #21 Xavier and an expected win over Georgetown. The remaining schedule looks daunting, but I think (hope) a good foundation is being built for next season and beyond. Stubblefield spent the past several years at Oregon, so he's going to target JUCOs and transfers like Coach Altman does. Their signee for the class of 2022 is one of the top JUCO scorers in the nation and several contributors on this year's squad have eligibility remaining. Bynum and Grant-Foster should also contribute early. DePaul fans who closely follow their recruiting tell me that they have a good shot at a couple of four stars they are chasing.
The win/loss record is still way behind where DePaul wants to be, but I think there is reason for optimism. And who knows, maybe we'll get back on their schedule again. :-) I do love a Detroit vs DePaul game.

The Blue Demons got some good news on the recruiting front recently as four star guard Zion Cruz committed to DePaul. The 6-5 Cruz is ranked 38th in the nation by 24/7 Sports. Cruz had offers from lots of high major programs and was considered one of the best prospects left in the class of 2022. He joins JUCO scorer KT Raimey in the class of 2022 for DePaul.

Those days are over.

Who in that group of 11 Jucos was highly recruited? They were all basically under-recruited sleepers who turned into smart finds. Ultimately I want to return to the place where local Detroit stud high schoolers grow up dreaming about becoming a Titan. In the meantime, we have to find two significant big guys with the ability to fill holes and IMMEDIATELY help us win. Does that mean they have to score in double figures? No. Does that mean they have to win the dunking contest at the NCAA Tournament next year? No. All it means is they have to be tough, strong dudes like Bacari was who take no prisoners and want to cut down the nets in March more than anything else on their personal agenda. Can we find two of those guys? We better, or we've got the wrong coaching staff in place. Does it matter whether they are Transfers in the Portal or JUCOs? No. I would love if they were still in high school but once again this year we can't afford to give another scholarship to the kind of prepster who would come to U-D and have to wait for him to improve and work his way into the lineup. We need two big guys right now, ready to go and help get us over the top.
The landscape has changed. If 30% of rosters are in the Portal plus Jucos, we better get those two guys. Two guys to round out a stable roster. Two guys with a chance to come make a difference on an established team and help put us over the top. If MD and his staff can't accomplish that, shame on them. But I don't know why we are so negative around here when we are one of just two stable rosters in the Horizon (PFWFWUeee being the other). A real chance to finally win the League on the Davis show's 5th try. If we succeed, congrats and high-fives all around. If we fail, come back next year and it's open season on complaints and direction of the Program because we'll be starting over again.
But if we go to the NCAAs, recruiting quality prepsters becomes much easier and we can take off from there and start building the Program the right way again. In the meantime, who cares if the two guys we need come from other 4-year schools or Juco, as long as they're good persons, good students and guys with the ability, toughness and mindset to put us over the top.

The Blue Demons finished the 2021-22 season 15-16, 6-14. Injuries hit the team hard, and a program like DePaul doesn't have much margin for error. Leading scorer Javon Freeman Liberty missed 7 games and starter Tyon Grant Foster only appeared in one game before being lost to injury. 20 minute per game rotation player Javon Johnson only played 10.
There were positive signs during the season, including non-conference wins over Rutgers and Louisville, and some solid wins in conference play. Coach Stubblefield's team showed some positive signs during his first year at the helm.
The Demons are optimistic about getting Grant-Foster and Johnson back from injury, along with class of 2021 recruit Ahmad Bynum, who redshirted in 21-22. The Demons signed top 50 recruit Zion Cruz for the class of 2022, along with a couple of JUCO standouts. On the negative side, leading scorer Freeman-Liberty and second leading scorer David Jones won't be back. Liberty is trying his hand in the pros and Jones is transferring to St. John's.
As usual, lots of questions about DePaul for the coming year.

Thanks, Scout. I missed that one. Good pick up for the Blue Demons, a 13 ppg scorer from the Big 12. This is his second transfer, though, so he'll need a waiver.
