The Penguins picked up a nice ESPN 3 star forward out of Florida for the class of 2014. Looks like a real high flyer based on his highlight reel. Could be some nice battles in the future between him and Aaron Foster Smith. verbalcommits.com/players/sidney-umude

The Indianapolis Star reports that sophomore Ryan Weber, who looked to be the key player on next year's Penguin squad, is transferring from YSU. Weber was the team's #2 scorer this year. With Weber leaving, YSU will lose its top 3 scorers (Weber plus graduating seniors Kendrick Perry and Kamren Belin) and #2, 3, and 4 rebounders and assists men. Rumor on the YSU board is that Marcus Keene, who played well (6.5 ppg) as a freshman but was suspended late in the year, is also heading for the exits. Ouch.

Ouch is right. That's a pretty big hit. I'm sure with the improvement that Weber showed from his freshman to sophomore years, they were expecting a big junior year from him.
Is Slocum in any kind of trouble? Basketball doesn't appear to be a big deal at YSU, but his record there is terrible.

Is Slocum in any kind of trouble? Basketball doesn't appear to be a big deal at YSU, but his record there is terrible. Unlike most TItan fans, I've always been sympathetic to Slocum. He's got the most difficult job in the Horizon. The smallest budget, some of the poorer facilities, and the one place where the attention goes to football. He's also got to recruit to Youngstown. As we know, no matter how beautiful and safe the campus, some people will hear "Detroit" and go "no way." Imagine what they think of Youngstown. The low academics may enable him to recruit a few we pass on, but for a more academically ambitious kid is just another mark against YSU. They've been patient with him, and appropriately so, given what he's got to work with. He seemed to be making slow, steady progress, has opened up some recruiting pipelines into Florida (and maybe Detroit), and I think they are upgrading facilities there. In 2012 and 2013 they put together back to back winning seasons for the first time since 1984-85. But this past year they fell back and were seeded 7th in the tournament, and lost in the first round on a highly visible play where his coaching strategy was generally considered flawed. He's gone through the career of YSU's best player ever, and if he loses his top returning scorer and his best freshman to transfer, you've gotta think patience might finally run out. All that said, I've not heard any rumors. (which may just illustrate the difficulties he faces - can't even get rumors going about him being fired!)

Commish, I didn't feel strongly about Slocum one way or the other until he blew up at Calihan after Gabe made that late game lay up during the 2012-13 season. I agree he's got a tough job there, but he's also been given a lot of leeway by the administration. His first six years there were horrible, and he showed no signs of turning things around.
He was just another HL coach who I was ambivalent about until he went crazy during that particular game and tried to confront Coach Ray during the post game handshake. That was totally unprofessional and uncalled for. Now, I can't stand him. Having said that, I'd be happy to see him stick around at YSU, since he doesn't appear to have the ability to make them a contending team.

I haven't posted here in a while but with all the posts on detroittitanhoops about the two forums I thought I'd check in. My feeling on Slocum is also based on the same incident Sam mentioned. Admittedly, that's a miniscule sample size to judge the man on. Still, in that instance, he made himself look like a fool with the confrontation. Ray looke like he was trying to both calm the waters and figure out what in the world Slocum was so agitated about. I could understand a little irritation over Gabe's basket but Slocum also needed to take into account that Dos Santos almost never played at all. He was a human victory cigar and wanted a chance to get on the scoresheet. If Ray or any other regulars did that, I'd have understood the anger. But in this case Slocum just looked like a bitter guy.

I agree on the Dos Santos incident. Don't get me wrong - my sympathy for Slocum knows many boundaries!
BTW, more broadly, I really dislike the idea that seems to have taken hold that nobody should really try in the final 90 seconds of a blowout. I was a scrub, and when I got to play, I played hard every second until that final buzzer.

Don't worry, Commish, I know you're not Slocum fan. :-)
And you make a great point about the final few moments of a blowout. I was a scrub as a junior in high school, and whenever I got in the last thing I was thinking about was taking it easy and just running out the clock. That was the case whether we were ahead or behind.

YSU is picking up a big guy via the transfer route. Don't know much about him. He is big, though. Averaged about 10 mins and four points per game last year. After losing 2014 recruit JaChristian Biles, a 6-2 guard from Oak Park, to Schoolcraft CC last month (presumably due to academics), YSU found a replacement in 6-2 G Cameron Morse of Flint (Carmen Ainsworth).

6-7 Forward Kyle Steward from Cass Tech, one of YSU's several recent recruits from Michigan, has left YSU and enrolled at Butler CC in El Dorado, Kansas. Steward played sparingly last year as a frosh, 88 minutes total in 17 games. His best game was against Wright State in February, scoring 7 points on 3-4 shooting in 14 minutes.
