Looks like Jerry Slocum will be back next year for YSU. Not really a surprise. I hope the Titans bring his season to an end tomorrow.

Here's an interesting quote by Osandai Vaughn in the Youngstown Vindicator. Vaughn is one of now 4 or 5 players who is transferring from YSU. It's interesting because you don't usually see a transfer explain this much. It is thoughtful, it's critical of the coach but not in a spiteful way, I don't way think, and it gives some insight into Vaughn's thinking, and what at least some other young men might be thinking about in both recruiting and deciding whether or not to transfer:
Vaughn is from Charlotte, NC.

Add Larry Johnson to the list of transfers out of YSU (Osandai Vaughn, Marcus Keene, Jalon Plumer, Shaun Stewart). Johnson, son of former UNLV/NBA star Larry Johnson, was a junior walk on who played 92 minutes last year, including a season high 10 in the season finale at Detroit. Though Jeff Goodman reports this as a "transfer," this looks less like a true transfer than a guy who decided he just didn't want to play that final year; but maybe he'll wind up somewhere else.

There should probably be a separate category for "walk on" transfers like this. Man, players are really bailing out of YSU.

If Vaughn feels that is not the right fit, he's well within his rights to go. I just wonder why he chose YSU in the first place. Slocum has been coaching for 100 years; his style is no secret. And it's always been cold in Youngstown in the winter. Funny that he would mention that as a reason, as if it was a surprise. JUCO's in particular really have to make sure they are making the right choice when they choose a D1 program. You only get two years to play and you don't want to waste a year in the wrong situation and then scramble to try to find the right spot for your last year. Also, as a two years of scholarship/one year of play transfer, you're going to have limited options. It's tough. I'll bet some of our JUCO targets from 2014 are thinking the same thing.

YSU left today for a Bahamas trip. They'll have 3 games in the next three days. It's their first foreign trip in 15 years.

YSU lost on Monday to the CTG Knights 93-90. They trailed by 14 with 2:20 remaining, and a big rally ran out of clock. Warm sun in the Bahamas, though.

The Penguins beat a team called the "Real Deal Shockers" on Tuesday, 101-69, in Nassau. Freshman Jordan Andrews, who got a lot of playing time on the Penguins trip, scored 23. Brett Frantz, who was the backcourt teammate of the almost Titan BJ Jenkins at Neosho JC last year, scored 17. YSU went 2-1 on the trip against Bahama club teams. Senior Bobby Hain averaged 17 points and 13.7 rebounds on the trip.

A little follow up: Vaughn has finally enrolled at Palm Beach Atlantic, which plays at the D-II level. OK. It's a step down, but Vaughn doesn't have a pro career ahead of him. Why not? Of course, it's also 9 and a half hours from Charlotte, vs. the 8 hours he was unhappy with. And last year, Palm Beach Atlantic took 591 three pointers in 26 games; YSU took 588 in 32 games. It is warmer than Youngstown, gotta say that.
