YSU's Braun Hartfield will transfer. Hartfield would have been YSU's top returning scorer and assist man (13.6, 2.9 pg in 2018). Jeremiah Ferguson and Jacob Brown, bench players, are also leaving. The departures of Hartfield and Ferguson mean only one Jerry Slocum recruit, Ypsilanti's Devin Haygood, will remain with the team next year. Ferguson lands at Grand Valley State.

The Penguins picked up another piece for the class of 2019 when Jamir Thomas III verbally committed. Thomas is a forward from Garden City Community College. On paper, there is a lot to like about Thomas. He is listed at 6-8, 250 and averaged 13 points, 8 rebounds, and two blocks per game on his way to being named All Conference. www.gobroncbusters.com/sports/mbkb/2017-18/releases/20180309pnicr1

Jeff Goodman talks to Coach Calhoun about the YSU summer trip.
Youngstown coach Jerrod Calhoun on Virgin Islands trip:
Standout: Naz Bohannon (10 ppg, 10 rpg). “Versatility and toughness.”
Surprise: Michael Akuchie (12 ppg, 10 rpg)
Learned: “We are better defensively.”
Concern: Overall shooting
DNP: Olamide Peterson (broken hand)

Akuchie leading with 14 points); Virgin Island National Team, 90-82 (Bohanan led scorers with 14; YSU trailed with under 5 to play)and Calgary again, 71-59 (Darius Quisenberry led the Penguins with 16 points while Akuchie posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds). Not very impressive winning margins, but who knows what Calhoun may have been experimenting with during the games. Still went 3-0, and of course the big thing is they get the extra practice. I hope the Titans get in a foreign trip in the next year or two. Good for practice, good for recruitment.
