Since there is nothing to cheer about in Titanland, I'll take some "told you so" joy in the ongoing travails of Oakland's two ridiculously hyped recruits of the last two years, Babtunde Sowunmi and CJ Gettelfinger.
Sowunmi, remember, was the game changing big man in the Horizon. I noted in my 2018-19 preview of Oakland:
Last year Sowunmi got into 15 games, averaging 2.5 minutes, 0.3 points, and 0.3 rebounds. This year he's played in 6 of Oakland's 9 games, averaging 0.7 ppg. Hey, good student, great kid, big and tall--that's worth a shot for a mid-major. He may yet develop, and I wish him well. My beef is with those who spread the hype.
This year the hyped recruit was Gettelfinger. The Grizzlie forum was just about wetting its pants over getting CJ onto the court. Comments such as this:
But I wrote:
Another good kid who may yet develop, but the idea that a skinny guard from a small time East Tennessee high school was going to step right in as a major force was always a bit preposterous. Gettelfinger has appeared in 8 of the team's 9 games, averaging 8 minutes and 1 point per game.
I find it interesting that OU is able to build some hype around these recruits.
Anyway, I don't mean for this to be a mean a vain post--just noting, really, that OU is pretty good at hyping its recruits.

I dunno. Some people here hyped up the Egyptian big man and said he will change the landscape of the Horizon League ... and that was without anyone even confirming his name or having so much as a picture of the kid.

Hyping a phantom is different than hyping a recruit. And I don't believe there was ever any media about the mystery man. Outside of speculation on two Titan boards, nothing--and that speculation seems to be more wondering about (or joking about) whether the two exist at all. If and when they are real and their identities known, we'll see if people hale them as great recruits, and whether that is merited. OU seems to have a penchant for getting people to think its recruits are quite a bit better than they turn out to be. In the cases of Babatunde and Gettelfinger, there were all kinds of reasons to be skeptical either player would have immediate impact.

*some people* -- merely 1 person tweeted once that there was a MBM that would 'change the landscape'. Otherwise, a few of us have heard inside scoop from people in the program about at least 1 Egyptian big man could be en route. I'll admit I heard this in July directly from someone who is paid to know about recruits and incoming players.
As for Oakland...the folks on their board aren't the most educated or in tune with the recruiting scene as other boards I've seen. There's no UDBaller or HSScout over there that actually knows and follows the AAU and prep scenes. So yeah, its funny to see their fans talk themselves into a tizzy of hype with each new guy they get. It makes sense as its easy to have bias towards things you know (your own players) so you are likely to over-rate them just by nature of knowing them.
On the court this year, they just knocked off Western and are having a decent non conf run. They've integrated the new guys pretty well and the Juco kid who did / didn't/ did / didn't / did want to be a Pioneer (thats not exaggerated how many times he flip flopped) seems to be a real find for them thus far.
And look, they're success the past 5 years or so since entering the HL has demonstrated they are clearly a step ahead of us. It's just a fact. - They are winning at a good clip - they are in contention for Regular Season HL titles - they have had good shots at winning the HL tourney (although have famously flamed out annually) - they are putting guys into the top level of pros regularly - they get 3,000 in attendance to their home games - like him or hate him, Kampe is on the radar of local news/reporters
We fall behind each and every one of those items above, when looked at objectively. Yes, there are many reasons why that could be the case, but its also a stone cold fact. So, hat tip to Oakland and Kampe for keeping it going. I sincerely mean that.

And we're more than a step behind OU. I've long said Kampe is a sort of poor man's Dick Vitale, and I mean that as a compliment, not an insult. There are very few Dick Vitales in the world. Kampe has taken the program from D2 to D1, from the Summit into the Horizon, and he's won a lot more than he's lost while building something of an image for his team, a bit of a "cool" vibe. He brings to mind the song "My Way."

I heard an interview with Kampe in February where he talked about losing players to transfer, and the tone of his comments make me think some players might be on the way out. You never know what is behind the scenes, but I did not expect this one.

OU sophomore guard Kenny Pittman also in the transfer portal. Pittman appeared in 30 games, averaging less than a point per game.

You never know what is behind the scenes, but I did not expect this one. I listened to the postgame interview on WDFN radio after the OU/GB game. Reflecting on Coach Kampe’s comments, he must have known this was coming. The discussion pretty much was devoted to talking about how the transfer portal phenomenon has changed the game, and he said it was too early to talk about next year because he wasn’t sure who might be on the team.

Yeah, I think that is the same interview I heard. Transfers are making roster construction tougher than ever for mid major coaches.

Earlier in the season Maddox tweeted a remark (since deleted) that a specific past date was the worst day in his life. Someone reviewed his Twitter feed and it turns out it was the date he committed to Oakland. So he apparently wasn’t a happy camper.
