Coach Beilein was on the campus at Niagara today for the introduction of his son Patrick as head coach. Interesting that John's 1st D1 head coaching job was also in the MAAC at Canisius

In a move that surprised me, Michigan coach JB is leaving Michigan to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers. He reportedly got a five year deal.

This move really does surprise me. Beilein seemed to really be building a good thing in AA and establishing quite a legacy, if he kept up the success he's had in the past 12 years. Heck, he made U of M fans nearly convince themselves they were more a basketball school than a football school with the comparative success he's had. If you haven't read up on him, he's a pretty good Catholic boy and a proud alum of Wheeling. He often talks about Jesuit teachings and how they helped form him and lead him even to now. By all accounts a good guy all around.
About the NBA...he's 66 years old and more than ever the leap from NCAA to NBA seems bigger and bigger. Can his team-first philosophy and development of players still be effective in a league of 29 year olds making $20M per year? I don't know. And its odd that NOW he wants to make the move after a full career at the college level. From a monetary perspective he'll make $5M a year with the Cavs, vs the $2.5M at UM. We are still talking in the millions, so even though its double he wasn't exactly pleading poverty before.
I lean to be a Spartan fan overall, but its been fun to see U of M so good at hoops. And heck, its better than some other random Big Ten team being a counter weight to MSU.

And heck, its better than some other random Big Ten team being a counter weight to MSU. Definitely surprises me. His age, the team he's going to, the timing of the hire (mid May), are some of the factors that made this seem unlikely. Last year I thought the Pistons flirtation was just a way for JB to get some more money out of Michigan, for himself and for his assistants, and he did end up with an extension and a reported bump in pay to $3.8 million per year. I hadn't heard any rumors about Beilein to the NBA, and I had forgotten that the Cavs still had an opening. From what I hear, Cleveland fans aren't thrilled about the move, and I can understand why. Seems like more guys from college are failing than succeeding. Still, I can see the reason for the move from the coach's perspective. College coaching is HARD WORK. There is really no offseason, and you never stop recruiting. As we have talked about on the board before, roster uncertainty is lasting into the summer these days, given transfers and NBA draft decisions. He's going to make a ton of guaranteed money with the Cavs, and if he struggles there, no one will blame him. And he'll basically have his summers off, especially with the Cavs not likely to make the playoffs for at least a couple of years. When my Dad sent me a text informing me that JB had taken the Cavs job, I thought he was kidding.

The Twitterverse is speculating Brad Stevens. Sounds to me like a U of M fan who was a math major. They were paying JB 2.5 and Stevens is making 3.7+ at Boston. He has done a nice job in Boston and turned the Celtics around. If Michigan was going to pay 4 million per. they should have given it to JB. I think it was a beautiful job on Dan Gilberts part. Instead of taking Izzo away from his alma mater he took a very good coach away from MSU's competition. Great donation to the old school. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't told by Izzo or the alum assoc. to quit sniffing around and go hire UM's guy. If JB doesn't work out Gilbert is still helping State. looks like from his perspective, he can't lose. It's better than redoing your mortgage.

A few UNC players are now actively, and openly, recruiting Jalen on social media. Although at this time there's thought he's going to Kansas. But we shall see. What an odd and overall intriguing recruiting season this has been - all spun up due to the transfer/free agency rule.
