Second high school guard in the class for EMU, to go along with six JUCO players who have reportedly verbally committed. Not all of these commitments have been officially announced, however. Almost all of the upperclassmen ran out of eligibility or transferred after the season. EMU needs some maturity and size in this class.

One of the EMU assistant coaches tweeted out the following. I imagine an official release from the school is coming soon.
Eight new players for the Eagles. No surprises, as all of these had been mentioned on social media previously.

Marcus Gibbs of Spire Institute, class of 2019, committed to EMU. I think this is the young man who was originally in the class of 2018 and played at King and Cass.
Edit: Per Verbal Commits, Gibbs is joining the team as a walk on.

No surprises, as all of these had been mentioned on social media previously. I said above that I thought the official release from EMU about their incoming class would be "coming soon". In reality, it took two and a half months, but it is finally here. The Eagles added a whopping ten players to the roster, with a class made up of freshmen, transfers, and JUCOs. The article gives a good amount of information on each player. emueagles.com/news/2019/9/3/mens-basketball-mens-hoops-announces-2019-signing-class.aspx

Very interesting Scout, thanks for posting - it's almost worth posting elsewhere to get more eyeballs on the forum. The interesting takeaway section is here:
"The case could also be made that college basketball has more parity now than ever before, so even with the addition of Oakland, this particular situation would have been inevitable.
It isn’t easy for a school to have a consistent five-or-six-year run atop of their region. It is very possible that adding Oakland, next to Detroit and EMU has simply diluted the pool of potential recruits in the area, meaning that the margin for misses has shrunk."
With another D1 program around PLUS a notable decrease in the quantity of D1 talent in Detroit & Michigan there seems to be good credence to the argument of a dilution amongst the programs. In turn, it seems both OU and UDM are getting creative in adding talent any which way -- Juco, D1 transfers/castoffs/2nd chancers, international, expanded out of state recruiting, etc.

Eastern had an attendance problem long before Oakland became D-1. What seems to be happening to enrollment at EMU is also happening at WMU; and, the reasons just might be the emergence of Grand Valley and Ferris State on the west side of Michigan. The newer State schools have more attractive facilities and housing than the older State schools. As Michigan's population growth declines, these various State schools are competing against each other for a slow-growing pool of in-State students.

On a night that featured several of my favorite college basketball teams going down in defeat, EMU got a nice home win over Valpo to add something in the plus column. The Eagles beat the hated Crusaders (I still hate them) 85-79, after leading by ten at the break, falling behind by six in the second half, and then taking control in the last four minutes to get the victory. My fellow Lincoln Railsplitter Ty Groce scored 23 in the victory, but the Eagles also got big games from first year Eagles JUCO Thomas Binelli and transfer Noah Morgan. Binelli, the highest rated of the Eagles JUCO players, saw his first action of the year after recovering from a broken foot and finished with 12 points, going 4-6 from three point range.
EMU is 7-1, beating some non-D1 teams early and raising the level of competition as the season goes on. I thought it was a smart way to give their new players time to gel. Next four games for the Eagles are against Detroit, Northeastern, Michigan State, and UNLV, before they close out the non-conference season against non-D1 Concordia. I'm not sure how good the Eagles are yet, but I know they are a confident bunch and playing better as the season has gone on.

I am at the Convocation Center tonight for the EMU vs Northeastern game, doing a little advanced scouting. Good game so far. Eagles should be ahead big are struggling on offense.

Last night EMU won with their defense, because their offense struggled again. JUCO transfers Noah Morgan (19) and Yeikson Montero (12), were the leading scores, but combined to shoot 11-26 from two, 1-7 from three, and 8-14 from the stripe. JUCO transfer Thomas Binelli scored 9 points on 3-4 from three point range in 17 minutes. EMU is having some success on the JUCO route.
I think the Eagles will struggle most nights in the MAC, especially early in the conference season, but they're 9-1 right now going into their match up with Michigan State on 12/21. Their crowd last night was bigger than I expected, announced as 1,077. The pep band, which usually is very active and entertaining, did not perform, but the crowd was pretty loud. I expect them to lose to State, but a road win in the following game against UNLV is not out of the question.

Reality smacks EMU in the face tonight. Eagles down 86-36 in the second half against Michigan State.

EMU finishes the non-conference season with a record of 10-3 after another victory over a non-D1 opponent, 88-53 over Concordia. EMU lost on the road to UCI, Michigan State, and UNLV, so there's no shame there, but they haven't racked up any really noteworthy victories. I expect a less than .500 record in MAC play, give or take a win or two.
