Butler loses an early commit from the class of 2017. Not really a surprise, given the way those very early commits often go. It's not a big blow to the Bulldogs, who pulled in two top 100 types for the class of 2016 and both of those seem pretty solid. In fact, I would not be surprised if this recent decommitment might have been "encouraged" by Butler.
From the Twitterverse:
Alex Miller @_Alex_Miller_ 2h2 hours ago The David Caraher decommitment is awfully stinky. Something bigger is in the works for somebody (whether it's Butler or Caraher).

Marquette's non-conference schedule, with last season's RPIs: A Wisconsin #2 H Iowa #40 N Ariz. St #90 or LSU #65 or NC State #32 (Legends Classic) N " " " H Belmont #100 (Legends Classic) H IUPUI #258 (Legends Classic) H Presbyterian #314 H Jackson State #323 H Chicago State #333 H Stetson #335 H San Jose State #336 H Maine #339 H Grambling #351 (dead last in D-I).
Now, let's not be too hard: they've got the two Big 10 teams, and the two high majors and Belmont from the Legends Classic. But Wisconsin is their only true road game and those last 8 games??? Anyone would be hard pressed to come up with 8 worse opponents. Basically, every game they scheduled this year -- the Wisconsin series and Legends Classic were contracted more than a year ago, the Iowa game is a Gavitt Game -- involves a team with an RPI above 300 last year.

That is one ugly schedule, especially those last eight games. I don't think they have usually scheduled that soft, so my guess is that Marquette REALLY doesn't want to have three losing seasons in a row. They will be depending on heavily on new comers this year, and they have an unproven coach. It looks like they are loading up on cupcakes to get as many wins as possible before the conference season. It will work out for them. They have great fan support so that a schedule like this for a year won't turn them off. I actually wish that U of D would schedule a little softer some times. Looks like Coach Mac goes out of his way to schedule tough, even with young teams, and the win/loss record reflects that.

There can be advantages to scheduling tough, but also to scheduling weak at times. I really wouldn't mind a season where we beat the crap out of 8 cupcakes to start the season, and it might be good for casual fan interest, too. Still, that Marquette run is a doozy.

I hate seeing mid-majors turned into farm teams for high majors. It is a trend that could mark the final death of mid-major ball, at least of mid-majors competing reasonably with high majors. Think where CSU would be this year with a lineup of Forbes, Lewis, Grady, and Lomomba. If this trend accelerates then good scouting, patience player development, and the occasional recruiting coup will be more or less for naught. Continuing that up transfer trend we worry about, George Mason suffered a tough loss. Last year, freshman Isaiah Jackson started 23 games for them and averaged just under nine points per game. That's a nice recruiting job by the George Mason staff, and they were looking forward to three more years of Jackson. Unfortunately for them, Jackson heard the lure of the bigger schools asked for his release. He's going to join Providence and have three years of eligibility after sitting out 2015-16. collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/07/18/former-george-mason-wing-transferring-to-providence/

The Golden Eagles start their foreign trip off with a win.
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 23m23 minutes ago Marquette rallies to win its first game overseas 89-82. Henry Ellenson with a double-double -- 24 and 10. 28 points for Duane Wilson.
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 23m23 minutes ago One thing to remember about Marquette: Golden Eagles are playing in Italy without freshman Haanif Cheatham. Still not cleared by NCAA.

Georgetown is another Big East team getting good contributions from a freshman on the foreign trip.
Adam Zagoria @adamzagoria 5h5 hours ago Freshman F Marcus Derrickson scored a game-high 20 points & junior F Reggie Cameron scored 13 points to lead Georgetown in its Italy win.
