Just 13 months until they can sign him! They'll probably have an assistant coach stake out his house and follow him around until then. Hope it happens. Always glad to see a mid-major snag a top recruit.

UMASS put together a great class of 2016, but the coach was fired and now it's breaking up. Brison Gresham and DeJon Jarreau have requested their release to transfer.

What a foolish thing to do UMass, firing that coach. They had 3 freshmen starting, 6 on the roster, from what, as you note, was considered a superb class. The had a total of 4 minutes played by seniors all year. And they weren't godawful- they were 15-18, with wins over Dayton, Temple, Harvard. A bright future tossed away.

Looks like they were set up nicely for the future, and Kellogg is a coach who has proven he could get them to the post season. Dumb move to throw that away. And then they hired the guy from Winthrop who changed his mind and decided he wouldn't accept the job AFTER the press conference to announce his hiring. What a mess.

Class of 1969 will remember that this happened in Detroit. Titans announced on Friday that Don Haskins had accepted the Titan head coach position only to do a reversal on the following Monday that he would remain at Texas Western (now UTEP). This was at least 3 months before Spencer announced that he was leaving for ABA.

UMass doubling down on what the Commish and I thought was a questionable decision when they fired their head coach last year. New guy Matt McCall went 13-20 in his first season, but the school gave him a one year contract extension today. www.umassathletics.com/news/2018/5/18/umass-announces-contract-extension-for-mens-basketball-head-coach-matt-mccall.aspx

(I'm bored and missing basketball, so I am back to recapping last season.)
2017-18 was an interesting year in the A10. The conference put three teams in the NCAA tournament, but saw Dayton slip in their first year without Archie Miller at the helm.
Rhode Island went 26-8 and beat Oklahoma in the first round of the NCAA tourney, but it cost them their coach as Dan Hurley took the UConn job. St. Bonaventure also went 26-8 and beat UCLA for their first NCAA tournament win in 48 years. Davidson is definitely enjoying their move to the A-10. They made the Big Dance last season and came close to upsetting Kentucky in a 5/12 match up.
VCU is continuing to try to find their way after the departure of Shaka Smart a few years ago.
UMass remains in a rut. Fordham is Fordham. Duquesne is hoping that Coach Dambrodt will be able to finally get them on track. The Dukes started fast, but faded during the last part of the season. There are lots of storylines to watch in 2018-19.
Note: Two of the best players in the A-10 this year were from that great Pershing squad of a few years ago. Darrell Davis averaged 15 points per game for Dayton, really closing his career on a high note after averaging about five points per game each of his first three years as a Flyer. Justin Tillman had a MONSTER year for VCU, averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds per game. Interesting note about Tillman, in his first three years at VCU he took a total of three three-point shots, missing all three. His senior year, he shot a respectable 33 percent from beyond the arc, hitting 27-82.

Jon Rothstein sees the upcoming A10 season this way.
Atlantic 10 Offseason Power Rankings: 1. Saint Louis 2. Saint Joseph’s 3. Davidson 4. Rhode Island 5. George Mason 6. St. Bonaventure 7. Dayton 8. UMass 9. VCU 10. Duquesne 11. Richmond 12. La Salle 13. George Washington 14. Fordham
10 Impact Atlantic 10 Freshmen: Carte’Are Gordon, Saint Louis Fred Thatch Jr., Saint Louis Jared Bynum, Saint Joseph’s Jermaine Harris, URI Tyrese Martin, URI Dana Tate, URI Dwayne Cohill, Dayton Osun Osunniyi, St. Bonaventure Vince Williams, VCU James Ellis, Duquesne
10 Impact Atlantic 10 Transfers: Marcus Evans, VCU Michael Gilmore, VCU Tramaine Isabell, Saint Louis Luis Santos, Saint Louis Dion Wiley, Saint Louis Jaylen Poyser, St. Bonaventure Jarred Reuter, George Mason D.J. Williams, GW Traci Carter, La Salle Frankie Hughes, Duquesne
Looks like Rothstein is putting a lot of stock in St. Louis blending in a talented freshman group with some transfers and returnees. I wouldn't mind seeing a good season from our old conference mates.

I wonder if the Horizon would consider a "Challenge". Lots of pros and cons. A lot would depend on what Conference you're challenging. Helps with scheduling, especially for the better teams, but for the better teams, it could lead to possibly eliminating themselves from an at large bid with a resume killing loss
