In an odd turn of events, Pat Beilein is stepping down as Niagara's basketball coach. Assistant coach Greg Paulus will take over as head coach. Beilein did not coach a single game for Niagara.

We could have had Pitino two years ago if we wanted. Another swing and a miss by Vowels. Instead we have a coach who can’t recruit, bashes his players publicly, and can’t win in the double digits. Sad.

So let me get this straight: it's worse to bash your players in public than what Pitino has done...whatever.

Iona had played in 4 straight NCAA tournaments, and 6 in the last 8 years, before slipping to 12-17 this year. Cluess had a 211-125 record for a .628 winning percentage in 10 years as coach, with 5 MAAC tournament titles and 4 regular season titles. This appears to be a true health issue, not something said as he's forced out. He was away from the sidelines all season with unspecified health issues, leaving his assistants to man the bench while he watched video and communicated with his assistants and players regularly. He has two brothers who died young from leukemia.

Cluess was the dean of coaches in the Conference and Iona was typically the top or one of the top programs until this season. Although I'm not aware as to exactly what his health issues are, they are definitely legit and I was under the impression that they could be classified as serious, and they kept him out the entire season.

Does anyone else think that the current state of emergency and NCAA restrictions on recruiting may allow some coaches to retain their jobs for another year? If I was AD it would certainly enter into my thinking. The inability to contact any recruits for a long period of time would make a coaching change hard for the incoming coach to be successful. This would be especially true for a younger coach who was an unknown.

Is coach Davis allowed to recruit by commenting on a player’s YouTube hype video?
