Bobby Hurley to Arizona State. Will that impact Nick Perkins and his commitment to Buffalo? Lots of people are going to be watching that closely. Yeah. It would be interesting if Perkins followed Hurley -- does Hurley think he's PAC 12 quality? I believe ASU has at least a couple open scholarships. Perkins appears to have had a solid senior year but I'm not sure he raised his stock like Douglas did--though with a signed LOI other schools obviously weren't recruiting him. And of course there is the more likely possibility I assume you were referencing, that he seeks a release and then looks at other mid-majors, in which case the Titans could be a player. Coach really wants that juco PG, though, and with no other scholarships appearing to open up, would we take Perkins as best athlete, or stay focused on position? Coach's view on that might be different from where it was last October, and I think he wants that experienced PG, even if it ends up being a flyer on a likely mediocrity for just 2 seasons.

I guess Mory Diane is another guy who might be affected by the coaching change at Buffalo. At point it looked likely the Titans would land him out of high school, but he surprised a lot of us by going to Buffalo. He apparently had some eligibility issues his freshman year at Buffalo. I don't know if there is still any mutual interest between Diane and the Titans, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

I agree, seems a little over the top. It's possible that the Buffalo AD didn't play all his cards as well as he might have, and it's possible Hurley really wanted to stay and build at Buffalo. I've read elsewhere that he liked being a big fish in a smaller pond. But Buffalo didn't treat him too shabby. His initial base was about $250K, with incentives that got him to almost $350 K his first year. That's well in the upper half of MAC salaries. After that year, they extended his contract (and may have given him a base raise, though that wasn't clear). Then after this season, his second year, they offered another extension and a boost to over $550,000 - let's assume the writer is correct that it was $551,000. That is the highest pay in the MAC, and probably a base pay increase of $250K or more. Would another $49K to $600K really have held him? Is it really so insulting that they said "we want to make you the highest paid coach in the league," bypassing a bunch of more senior coaches who have had success? I'm not sure more or less doubling one's base salary and giving them the symbolism of being the highest paid is really "a slap in the face." It's easy for writers to give away other people's money. The reality is that young coaches at schools like Buffalo move on. There are a few who stick around longer, and maybe they could have kept Hurley a couple more years, but with an NCAA win next season I'll betcha he'd be gone anyway, no matter what. There's a few who stay - Mark Few at Gonzaga; Brad Stevens who stayed at Butler until the NBA called; Shaka Smart stayed at VCU 3 or maybe 4 seasons longer than people thought, and that undoubtedly benefited VCU, but he left too. Not very many will do even that. These young coaches, or those around them, often talk of how much they love the job and community and blah blah blah, but in the end it's pretty tough to turn down an extra $1MM a year, flying charter instead of bussing your team around, having a fabulous practice facility, and being at a place where you think you can contend every year for NCAA at-large bids and maybe even for a national title. Buffalo is not a rich school. Were their alumni ready to pitch in another $500K to $1mm to keep Hurley (which ASU and others could still top)? I kinda doubt it-- Buffalo's a large public school but its basketball program is pretty young, and I doubt a lot of peak earning alums - people who graduated in the 1970s and 1980s when Buffalo was D-II- feel that attached to the program. White may not have done everything right, but I don't think I could be so harsh on him.

Eddie was a member of the 1976 Rutgers team that carried an undefeated record into Final Four. star of team, of course, was Phil Sellers...recruited to Piscataway by Dick Vitale. Saw that team play many times while living in metro area.

Travis Ford fired by Oklahoma State. Good overall record but no success in the NCAA tournament.
Trent Johnson fired by TCU. After success in his previous stops, he struggled to revive the Horned Frogs program in what has been a brutal Big 12.

Moose has everyone excited on other forum relating to big announcement at school today. We shall see. Dan Majerle's name was thrown into the fray for the first time. Not sure of that one....he has been settled in Arizona for quite some time. Seems too early for a new coach announcement....dismissal maybe....then interviews...then announcement.

Yes, I saw that post from Moose. I think you're right: If we see something regarding the coaching situation, it's more likely to be just a dismissal than the announcement of a new coach. Unless it'w internal like JJ getting the job, of course. Like you said, we'll see.

Some think it's the announcement of a 5 yr schedule agreement with U-M. If so, look to se if any quotes from Coach Ray....if so, it would be a giveaway that he will return.

Some interesting thoughts presented by Moose relating to Coach Ray.. The MBB banquet is on March 24. That would be a good date for the revelation of coaching future. Why would Ray hang around if he was being released? Maybe Ray is moving on to an administrative position at University...either in athletic dept or otherwise. If Bacari is the new coach, then we have to wait until Michigan season concludes. I am fine with Bacari as head coach, JJ as an assistant...Jay Smith leaves and Ray ends up elsewhere at UD. I don,t see retirement...Ray is only about 55.
