Seeing reports that UMass has fired all three assistant coaches, but are keeping the head coach.

Phil Martelli out at St Joes. He had been with the Hawks in some capacity since 1985.

Would have been better to allow him to retire, given his history with the program. The guy turns 65 before next season begins. He's been their head coach for 24 years, an assistant for 11 years before that. As head coach, he's won 6 A10 regular season titles, made 7 NCAA appearances, and got them to a #1 ranking for the only time in their history. They won 28 games just 4 years ago. They couldn't have quietly told him to announce his retirement then, and given him some "front office duties" in the interim?

Buzz is that Fred Hoiberg will be the next Nebraska coach. I'm surprised by that. Thought he might go after a more high profile job.

Vanderbilt fires Bryce Drew. His team was 0 for the SEC this season. Some Valpo alums pushing for him to return and replace Matt Lottich.

Alabama is reportedly negotiating a buyout for head coach Avery Johnson. Johnson had four seasons with the Tide with three NIT appearances and one NCAA appearance.

Because, ya know, before hiring Johnson they'd made 1 NCAA tournament in 9 years. I guess it's understandable that they want more. They were tournament regulars at the start of the millenium, and it seems like a job where you can win.

It's not just the pay and prestige, though those are huge things--the difference in salary coaching Vandy vs. coaching Valpo is HUGE. People in high level sports are naturally competitive, and want to line up against the very best. And yet... Drew had a sweet situation at Valpo. A Crusader legend from a legendary family, a team moving to the MVC. You look at Mark Few and think, maybe there's something to be said for staying put. Look at Kampe--he so wanted the UD or EMU jobs, but he was forced to stay at OU and now is likely much better off for it. Maybe Drew will return to Valpo--Lottich is 30-35 in his last 2 seasons.

Wasn't sure where to post this as it may be a coaching change and may involve Coach McCallum. If Hunter leaves, I wonder if Ray gets the head coach job?

Imagine if Hunter leaves, and the new head guy (not Ray) brings in his own assistants, and poor Cory Allen gets screwed again. If Hunter goes, GaSt could do a lot worse than just immediately promoting Ray, no fuss, no muss, probably no recruiting loss in what's been a pretty good program recently.

Sure they did... I thought Johnson had Bama going in the right direction, but apparently they weren't going that way fast enough. I imagine there are more coaches out there who will fail at that job than can be more successful than AJ, so it's a risk. That dare to be great thing doesn't always work out.

Wyking Jones fired at Cal. They had a terrible season, but showed some life at the end. Kind of surprising to hear this news today as reports had stated last week that he was being brought back for at least another year.
