The Pac 12 had a mixed bag of results on the opening weekend. The young Washington Huskies team surprised most by beating Texas in China. On the negative side, Arizona State lost to Sacramento State in Bobby Hurley's first game and UCLA lost to Monmouth in another big upset.

It's been an interesting start to the Pac 12 conference season. Washington, playing with an incredibly young team, is a surprise leader at 3-0, 11-4. UCLA has been up and down. They upset Kentucky, but also suffered some bad losses. USC shook off an uneven non-conference slate and are 3-1 with wins over Arizona and Arizona State. Despite a 1-2 record to get the conference season started, Arizona is expected to be the class of the conference again.
Oregon is off to what is becoming it's usual good start. Their program will take anyone from anywhere at anytime (transfers, JUCOSs, kids with baggage) but it is working for them in the win/loss column. Oregon State seems to be on the upswing under their new coach, who is in his second year. Cal is showing promise. Arizona State has been up and down, but off to a slow 0-3 start in league play. Stanford is hit with the injury bug, and has a record of 2-2 and 9-6, meaning Johnny Dawkins is still on the warm seat.

The mid major loss is the high major gain as Cal lands an important piece for next year, grad transfer Grant Mullins from Columbia. Mullins scored 13 ppg for Columbia last season, shooting 44% from three point range and 83% from the free throw line. Scored 22 points against Northwestern in his best game against high major competition. espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/62241/grant-mullinsJeff Goodman Retweeted Jeff Borzello Big pickup for Cal. New coach Bobby Hurley is off to a fast start at Arizona State, landing recent verbal commitments from 2016 center Jethro Tshisumppa, an ESPN four star player, and 2016 guard Sam Cunliffe, another ESPN four star. Hurley showed good recruiting skills at Buffalo, and it has to be easier recruiting kids to sunny Arizona. Hurley coached the Sun Devils to a record of 15-17 overall and 5-13 in conference, down from the 18-16, 9-9 record achieved the previous year under Herb Sendek. Despite the drop off, Hurley is being rewarded with a one year contract extension. on Rothstein @jonrothstein 2m2 minutes ago Arizona State's Bobby Hurley will receive a one-year contract extension, source told @cbssports. Official announcement expected soon.

Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar made news today by hiring Michael Porter, Sr. as an assistant coach. Porter is the father of Michael, Jr. a top ten player in the class of 2017. On the surface, it looks a bit shady, but further inspection shows it's not a situation like Danny Manning at Kansas or the Lawson brothers at Memphis. Porter Sr. is an experienced coach and was most recently spent six years as an assistant coach for the women's team at Missouri. Romar and Porter Sr. have been friends for decades. Romar is actually Michael Jr.'s godfather and another Porter son, Johntay, is a stud in the class of 2018 who already committed to Washington last year. Washington was already considered among the favorites to land Michael Jr. www.kansascity.com/sports/college/sec/university-of-missouri/article76178962.html

Cal surfaces a blow, due to the dreaded "grad transfer rule" and it's a puzzler. Starting guard Jordan Mathews is leaving the team to play elsewhere, um, I mean pursue his graduate degree. It's unexpected because Mathews was expected to play a prominent role on a potentially very good Cal team next season, after averaging 13.5 points per game and shooting almost 42% from three as a red shirt junior. His departure leaves a hole in the Cal line up. www.si.com/college-basketball/2016/05/31/jordan-mathews-california-graduate-transfer

Only pressure from the coaches association will help to eliminate the current grad transfer situation. Btw, when did this grad transfer situation originate?

Hurley continuing to make an impact in recruiting with Arizona State. The Sun Devils picks up a commitment from Remy Martin, prompting this tweet:
SunDevilSource.com @sundevilsource 4h4 hours ago ASU’s never signed five recruits in a two-class period who are four/five stars. Hurley signed three in 2016, now has two committed in 2017.
(Martin's four star status is debatable. ESPN and Rivals rate him a three star, Scout rates him a four star.)
