Washington pulls in a top 100 recruit as their first commit for the class of 2017, a shooting guard from the Seattle area. Coach Romar had seemed to hit a lull in recruiting for a period of a few years, but if the classes of 2015 and 2016 are any indication, he's got his mojo back. With five star targets Michael Porter, Jr. and Trae Young in his sights, the 2017 class could be his best in a long time. I'm a fan of Romar, so I hope this year's team gets back to the NCAA tournament and sets up a long period of success. www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-huskies/garfield-junior-jaylen-nowell-commits-to-uw/The Huskies add another top 100 guard to the class of 2017 as Daejon Davis joins Jaylen Nowell and Blake Harris. Davis and Nowell have actually basketball on the same team since fifth grade; kind of nice to see them continue on in the college ranks. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/17994810/daejon-davis-recommits-washington-huskies

ESPN has this article about the pressure that Steve Alford is feeling at UCLA. Last year was a disaster for the Bruins, and some fans are calling for a change. UCLA was unexpectedly bad last year and to make matters worse, they were surpassed by crosstown rival USC. It's a pivotal year for Alford. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/17963639/ucla-bruins-coach-steve-alford-make-break-seasonBig questions for the Pac 12: Will UCLA recover and keep Alford safe? (He's actually not going anywhere. He has a 7.4 million dollar buyout.) Will Washington return to the NCAA tournament and keep the heat off Lorenzo Romar? Can Oregon thrive in the role of favorite? Will Arizona ever make a Final Four under Miller? Will USC be able to return to the post season? Will the conference get some of it's reputation back after a poor showing in the NCAA tournament last season? Athlon Sports has the Pac 12 finishing this way: Oregon Arizona UCLA Cal Colorado USC Utah Washington Oregon State Stanford Arizona State Washington State

Utah loses a guy they won't miss, another one of those JUCO players who apparently made the wrong decision on a college.

Big news for Oregon State, who appear to be getting back their best player. This is a pivotal year for head coach Tinkle. He was hired in 2014 as the "hot, young, mid major head coach" to replace Craig Robinson. Tinkle brought his son, who was a top 100 player, and hired ex-Louisville player Steven Thompson as an assistant, getting Thompson's two top 100 ranked sons in the process. After going 17-14 in year one, he went 19-13 in year two and made the NCAA tourney. Last year they fell to 5-27, 1-17. I wouldn't say Tinkle's job is in trouble, but he can't have another season like last year. www.fanragsports.com/news/oregon-states-tres-tinkle-fully-cleared-activities/

As the college season draws to a close, it's a good time to take a look at how conferences fared.
For the Pac 12, it was a weird year. That weirdness was symbolized by USC finishing second in the PAC 12, but not making the NCAA tournament. In fact, only three teams from the league made the big dance, Arizona, Arizona State, and UCLA. UCLA got beat in the first round by St. Bonnie. ASU continued their late season fade (they dropped six of their last seven games) into the post season and lost to Louisville in the first round. ASU was a curious choice to make the tournament, seeing as how they finished 8th in a weak conference, and the big extension that Bobby Hurley signed with the Sun Devils looks a little questionable now. Arizona was rocked by connections to the FBI investigation, but won the regular season and tournament conference titles. All that momentum ended abruptly with a first round loss to Buffalo in the Dance.
Utah went the furthest of any PAC 12 team in the postseason, making it to the NIT final before losing to Penn State. Washington, Stanford and Oregon also made the NIT.
Oregon State made a splash a few years ago when they hired Coach Tinkle and got his Top 100 recruit son. Tinkle hired former college star Stephen Thompson as an assistant coach, and got both of Thompson's top 100 sons to commit to Oregon State, too. With all that, and even with Tinkle having a rep as a solid coach, OSU finished 10th in the PAC 12, 7-11, 16-16. In four years at OSU, Tinkle has won 35% of conference games. It's not easy picking the right coach. Colorado, California, and Washington State all struggled to varying degrees.
Coach Miller of UA survived the initial flurry of news after it was reported that he was recorded discussing cash payments to recruits, but the program is still waiting for the other shoe to drop. Coach Lorenzo Romar, who spent this past season as an assistant at Arizona after being fired by Washington in 2017, left to take the head coach job at Pepperdine. Romar, who built a reputation at Washington as a good coach who doesn't cheat, seemed like a possible candidate to take over for Miller if he was fired or resigned.

USC is really recruiting well.
Per Twitter:
Jon RothsteinVerified account @jonrothstein · 5m5 minutes ago USC's connection with the FBI probe has done nothing to inhibit the program's ability to recruit. Three Top-100 commitments in 2018 and three Top-60 commitments already in 2019.

Cal is on our schedule. This is a winnable P6 game, although playing on the west coast is particularly tough and I don't know if we've got the horses this year.

Maybe I am wrong, but it seems like a long time since we had the fortune of playing a Power 6 team that was really bad. Maybe we can pull a surprise this year.
