On the season...the Women now sit at 11th in the HL, and the Men are 8th. For what its worth, OU is 2nd and 3rd respectively (suggesting there's talent that can be attracted to the area to play that OU annually does a better job at than the Titans)

Ten of those are from foreign countries (not counting Canada). Four more players are from out of state. Of the 35 men on the Detroit Mercy roster one is from Norway, one is from New Jersey, one is from Ohio, and the rest are from the Detroit /Ontario area. Oakland has 26 players on its women’s roster. Seven of those are from foreign countries (not counting Canada) and another is from out of state. Of the 35 women on the Detroit Mercy roster all except one (from suburban Cleveland) are from the Detroit /Ontario area.

I think the coaching on the two soccer teams is lacking. I renewed my subscription for ESPN+ to get ready for the season and went back in and watched the last 2 men’s soccer games. We did outplay Green Bay but It ended in a tie. Green Bay is not a good team and would have trouble with a good HS team. It looked to me like we had no flow or any idea what we were trying to accomplish just 11 guys knocking the ball around and making a few uneventful runs. Everyone did hustle back to play D but there was never any man pressure once the ball was lost and the marking up was way to lax. The loss of the Lupenic brothers has really never been filled. It is really noticeable on the women’s side where the drop off of play was instantaneous. Keri lost Morris L. And regardless what was broadcast as the reason for his not returning, it was false. The loss of Mike L. was Vowels doing and he had absolutely no idea what he had there and no chance to coming close with a replacement. Under the present leadership I can not foresee any success for either of these teams in the future.

The reaction to my post was funny in that all I updated was the road win and the team's record without comment. If a team is 2-2-2 and in 8th place in the HL, then it must be a very balanced league with close scores separating the 3rd through 8th teams. The men's team tied Oakland. They lost 1-0 at NKU in the 2nd OT. Every HL loss by the women's team has been by just one goal. Many things are on hold in every department in the entire university due to Garibaldi's retirement pending for next July 1. The new president may even want to name a new AD.

There are so few of us left that even care. His points regarding the Lupenic brothers is spot on. The way a 25 year women's soccer coach was ousted versus the way a first year woman's basketball coach was coddled was shocking. Both coaches were confronted with player discontent. The disparity in the reactions is inexplicable. Having said that, I do not share his pessimism with the existing coaches. Nick's teams normally play hard with an edge and are competitive. I am sure he is not happy with the record this year, but this has been a strange couple of years. Not many of our teams could walk away from Michigan with a TIE (1-1) as the men's team did to start the season. Steve gets an incomplete for the women's team. The obstacles he has had make things hard to evaluate. Recruiting the first year was almost impossible due to the late hire date. Furthermore, the UDM reputation took a big hit in the local soccer community for the way Mike was ousted. His long time connections with local soccer and his affiliation with Vardar left a lot of hard feelings about UDM. It probably has not helped Nick recruiting efforts either. The alienation of former players that resulted from the removal also did not help. He met his players for the first time weeks, not months before the season. Add to that Shelton introduced a different style of play that emphasized different skills meant that some retooling of the roster would be required over the first couple of seasons. Three serious knee injuries to players expected to contribute this year was a bad break. Nevertheless, watching the latest game I saw a significant improvement in the team and playing style. I have high hopes for Steve and I hope he succeeds. It is depressing to think that everything is on hold for a year until we get a new president. The Athletic Department is hemorrhaging staff and I have no idea how are going to replace them with quality people in the current circumstances. Maybe a successful Men's Basketball season can push some of the negatives into the background. Lord knows we need something positive!

In the late 70’s and the 80’s Oakland was the best Soccer program in the state and recruited a lot of foreign players. They were the one of the best D2 programs in the country and back then there was not a lot of separation between the NCAA divisions, but Oakland was the definite power in Michigan and the Midwest. I think their program today’s is not as strong as it was back then. We hired the Lupenics who are Canadians and graduates of Oakland. They made both programs more than competitive.and UD soccer became a tough out. I’m not sure how many knew that Morris was a spin off victim of the Keri/Thomas scandal. Chuck makes some very good points and I hope he is right. I want my opinion to be wrong!

The Titans are a darned good defensive team, which makes sense as Nick's team always play good defenses but struggle on offense. The team has played 12 games, given up just 12 goals -- but also scored just 12 goals.
The team history is full of strong goalie play. This year Jonathan Kliewer, just a freshman, leads the league in goals against average and save percentage. His saves per game is middle-of-the-pack because the other teams don't get many shots -- again, good defense. Unfortunately, a lot of the offensive stalwarts (but not all) are seniors, so hopefully Nick has some offensive power on the bench for next year or some good prospects coming in, or both.

Playing good defense is not a reason for poor offense. Offense and Defense should be one in the same with the more you can throw forward the more your opponent has to pull back and withdraw. The coaching is in the transition and intensity of marking to prevent the opponent’s transition. Right now our attack is one dimensional and to easy to mark up. There does not seem to be enough overlaps, lateral and diagonal movement. It kind of reminds me of the old beginners box zone teaching method. The coaches have done a good job of getting the players to buy in to a comprehensive defensive effort but their next step is a long ways away.

Ladies 1 - 1 draw, FW hit the post 3 times in second half and scored their only goal on a PK. Men ended up 0 - 0 still no attack. Goalkeeper is very good and we received a red card with about 20 min. to go and being down a man didn’t seem to affect the flow of the game remained the same.
