American Conference Official 2022-23 Preseason Poll: 1. Houston 2. Memphis 3. Cincinnati 4. Tulane 5. Temple 6. UCF 7. SMU 8. Wichita State 9. South Florida 10. Tulsa 11. East Carolina POY: Marcus Sasser, Houston ROY: Jarace Walker, Houston Final AAC 2022-23 standings: 1. Houston 17-1, 33-4 2. Memphis 13-5, 26-9 3. Tulane 12-6, 22-11 4. Cincinnati 11-7, 23-13 5. Temple 6. Wichita State 7. UCF 8. South Florida 9. East Carolina 10. SMU 11. Tulsa The AAC mostly stuck to the script this season. Houston was the class of the league, and was ranked number one a couple of times during the season. They fell in the Sweet Sixteen to Alabama. Memphis won the conference tournament in an upset over short handed Houston, but became the first tournament victim of Cinderella FAU in the first round of the Big Dance. The AAC was a two bid league this year, a far cry from what it was when Cincinnati and Wichita State were good and UConn was still in the league. Big changes are ahead for this year, as Cincinnati, UCF, and Houston are headed to the Big 12. They will find the going much rougher there (even Houston) but the league will suffer as well. They raided some teams from Conference USA, including FAU, but it is going to be tougher to get an at large bid out of the AAC in 2023-24.

Memphis coach Penny Hardaway was suspended three games in 2022-23 by the NCAA for recruiting violations. He'll miss a couple of mid major games and a big match up with Missouri. He and one of his assistant coaches made separaate illegal visits to the home of a recruit. Incredibly, Penny stated that he didn't know those visits were against the rules. In addition to the suspension, the school will pay a $5,000 fine and have a year tacked on to the probation they received in another case under Penny. For those keeping count, that's two NCAA penalty cases, two NCAA tournament appearances, and one NCAA tournament win in the five years that Penny has been coaching Memphis. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/37893179/penny-hardaway-suspended-3-games-recruiting-violations

Wichita State does what I love to see, keep a local player at home even though the high majors are recruiting him. TJ Williams, who plays high school ball in Wichita, committed to the Shockers for the class of 2024. He had offers from Tennessee, Texas Tech, Iowa, and others, and cancelled his visit to Iowa to commit to Wichita. Good pick up for Wichita State. n.rivals.com/content/athletes/tj-williams-293213?view=pv

AAC official preseason poll for the 2023-24 season. Voting was done by the league coaches. 1. FAU 2. Memphis 3. Tulane 4. UAB 5. East Carolina 6. North Texas 7. SMU 8. Wichita State 9. South Florida 10. Tulsa 11. Rice 12. Temple 13. Charlotte 14. UTSA The AAC is lot different from a few years ago, when the league included Houston, Cincinnati, UConn, and others. It will be tougher to get an at large bid out of the AAC, unless you are playing a tough non-conference schedule. Given their resources and location, Memphis really should take control of the league going forward. A league with Temple, Memphis. Tulsa and Wichita State sound pretty good to me, maybe they should invite the U of D Titans to join..............I'd chip in for that.

And the brother of former Titan Muhammed Abdur-Rahim. Maybe we could get them to come to Muhammed's alma mater as a package deal (head coach + top assistant). You will remember Muhammed was a walk-on (brother Shareef was an NBA star who paid his tuition, I believe) and he was a solid defender - not flashy -- but he eventually earned a role for PW as a regular off the bench.
