Per Twitter (sorry Sam):
All signs point to Tubby Smith being relieved of his head coaching position at Memphis today, per multiple sources. Smith is slated to meet with the school president at 4:00 CT.
This is, ironically, the first post in this thread:
And it's just a month short of two years. I guess it's ok to fire an underperforming coach and three years isn't some magical number.

I guess it's ok to fire an underperforming coach and three years isn't some magical number. I agree with you on this, but keep in mind the big differences between the Detroit and Memphis situations. Tubby took over a struggling Memphis team and improved their record and place in the standings immediately. Racked up 21 wins this season and made it to the conference semifinals. Only losing one player to graduation, set up nicely for next season. All this while dealing with the loudest voice in the market advocating for his termination on a daily basis. By any objective metric, BA's first two seasons have been a disaster. Looking at the facts of the situation, it would appear that BA should be fired and Tubby retained. But Memphis fired Tubby today. And I fully expect BA to be back next season. www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/college/memphis-tigers/basketball/2018/03/14/tubby-smith-fired-memphis-basketball-penny-hardaway-tigers-buyout-grizzlies-fedexforum-ncaa-nit/410112002/

Memphis has deeper pockets than I thought. If Penny Hardaway gets the job he might be Clyde Drexler part II.

Yeah, he might be Drexler part two or Chris Mullins part two, which is probably a more accurate comparison seeing as the Mullins is in the job right now. Memphis's deep pockets come from some well heeled alumni, including that former player I mentioned earlier in the thread, who married into the Wal Mart family. I'm hearing that he was supportive of the firing. Also read yesterday that the University president met with an executive board to discuss firing Smith after a road overtime loss to East Carolina on February 3 that dropped the Tigers to 14-9, 5-5. So Smith basically got a little over a year and a half before they were trying to fire him. In what I consider a pretty weak move, the Memphis administration released a short statement saying that they had reached an agreement to fire Smith, but would have no further comment on the matter. At any rate, per this article they are going to have to pay him $10 million. www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/college/memphis-tigers/basketball/2018/03/14/tubby-smith-fired-memphis-basketball-tigers-buyout-penny-hardaway-buyout/415600002/

If he's getting $10 million from the Tigers, maybe he'll agree to coach us for free!

The AAC had another big coaching termination as Kevin Ollie was fired by UConn recently. Ollie won an NCAA championship with UConn in 2014, but hasn't made the tournament the last two seasons. I think there were reasons for that, as the program was hit hard by injuries the past two seasons. This could get ugly, as UConn is attempting to fire Ollie "for cause" which would mean they don't have to pay him the remainder of his contract. We'll see how it works out. www.si.com/college-basketball/2018/03/19/uconn-mens-basketball-coach-kevin-ollie-fired-just-cause-legal-analysis

Johnny Dawkins gets a contract extension to 2023-24 from UCF. On the court, things seem to be setting up nicely for UCF this season.

When the Big East split up, it wasn't at all clear that AAC would succeed as a basketball conference.

Cincy should continue to be a top program. Houston seems on the way up. SMU might slip back now that Brown is gone and the players he recruited are starting to exit. Aaron McKie will be taking over as head coach at Temple soon, next year I think, as part of a succession plan. UConn has a new coach. Memphis has a new coach. Will Wichita State slip while playing in a stronger conference? Johnny Dawkins seems to have UCF on the right track. Lots of questions. Memphis should be better than 8. Last year they finished 5th and won 21 games with only two players with previous D1 experience, and they bring back everyone except a semi starter and two small time role players. They have the top recruiting class in the conference. Of course, they have a new coach with Penny Hardaway, so I guess the question is if he can actually coach. I guess we'll see.

UConn adds another top 100 player with a verbal commitment from ESPN #97 Jalen Gaffney. UConn is going to have a resurgence, and the new coach will get a lot of credit, but some of that credit should go to Ollie. He recruited well there, and kept UConn a destination for top 100 players. Injuries crippled the Huskies the past two years. www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/235075/jalen-gaffney
