Temple scores a recruiting win, picking up a verbal commitment from Damian Dunn, a guard out of North Carolina. Dunn is ranked a three star recruit, and had a couple of high major offers. The Owls are in an interesting recruiting position, as Coach Fran Dunphy is in his last season as head coach with former Owl and current assistant Aaron McKie scheduled to take over in 2019-20. Temple has been mining North Carolina for talent. Three players on the current roster are from the Tar Heel State. 247sports.com/Player/Damian-Dunn-45572952/

No real revelations on the AAC from the first few weeks of the season. Houston is 4-0, but their big win was on the road against BYU. Solid, but not spectacular. League favorite UCF slipped against Florida Atlantic, but got a good win against Western Kentucky. Cincinnati lost their opener in a rock fight with Ohio State, but haven't lost since, with their notable win coming against Ole Miss. UConn got a big win against Syracuse but then got blew out by Iowa. Temple is 5-1 with a loss to VCU and wins over Georgia and Cal. Wichita State looks to be heading for a down year at 2-3. Generally speaking, the AAC favorites have scheduled soft in the early going and have a very good win/loss record right now. We'll see how that changes as the season progresses.
Memphis has made the most noise off the court, as new coach Penny Hardaway has immediately secured several top recruits. The 2018 class was ranked best in the AAC, and the 2019 class is shaping up even better. Most of the players committing to Memphis for 2018 and 2019 were coached by Hardaway previously, when he was a high school and/or AAU coach the past few years.

Houston improved to 10-0 with a win over St. Louis today, tying the 1967-68 team for the second best start in school history. The Cougars also have wins over LSU, Oregon, and Oklahoma State. They look like the class of the AAC so far.

They look like the class of the AAC so far. I hope I don't jinx them, but I noticed that Houston is ranked #22 in the latest poll. Seems a little low considering they are 12-0 with wins at BYU, at OK State, and against LSU, Oregon, and St. Louis.

Some AAC notes: UConn suffered a big setback as high scorer Jalen Adams is out 4-6 weeks after suffering a knee injury. Adams is averaging 17 points per game. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/25954053/uconn-jalen-adams-4-6-weeks-mcl-sprainThe game of the year in the AAC might be this Sunday at 4:00 PM when #25 Cincinnati visits #12 Houston. The Bearcats are 21-3 and the Cougars are 22-1. Both teams are 9-1 in conference. The game will be televised on ESPN. UCF is having a good season at 16-5, 6-3, but they were a preseason pick to win the conference and have been inconsistent. They could get healthy, as they play a mediocre SMU team on the road before getting two decent teams, USF and Memphis at home. Memphis blew out UCF at home a couple of weeks ago. In the post game conference, first year coach Penny Hardaway made waves by claiming that he was facing a lot of "hate" from other coaches, and other coaching staffs were jealous of the NBA flavor of the Memphis staff. (Sam Mitchell and Mike Miller are assistant coaches with Memphis.) The Tigers then dropped 3 in a row but can get back on track with a home game tomorrow against a struggling UConn squad. Memphis senior guard Jermaine Martin had one of the most incredible performances of the year when he scored 41 points in the SECOND HALF in a loss to South Florida. Speaking of South Florida, they are one of the biggest surprises in college basketball, sitting at 16-6, 6-4. They expect to have almost everyone back next season, too. Temple is having a solid season but missed the chance to pick up a road win by losing big to Tulsa today.

The Houston vs Cincinnati game did not disappoint. Elvin Hayes's school held Oscar Robertson's school scoreless over the last six plus minutes of the game in a 65-58 win. Houston is now at the top of the AAC standings by one game over the Bearcats.

Wow, that's a lot of money. It will be interesting to see how that works out because ESPN has been cost cutting in some areas and overpaying for personalities and programming in others.

Most pundits picked UCF to win the AAC in 2018-19, but Houston surprised just about everyone by rolling to a 16-2, 31-3 mark to take the league championship. Cincinnati won the conference tournament, and UCF and Temple both joined the Cougars and Bearcats in the Big Dance. UConn had a lot of buzz after hiring Danny Hurley, but failed to make an impact on the court finishing 6-12 in conference. SMU might be entering a long term spiral, going 6-12 in conference for the second year in a row. Memphis finished 11-7 in conference and made the NIT.

South Florida is the last AAC team standing as they prepare for game #2 of the championship series of the CBI against DePaul. USF current leads 1-0 in the best of three.
Wichita State salvaged what had been a rough season with a run to the NIT semifinals, before losing to Lipscomb. WSU slipped a bit in their second year in the AAC.

Memphis is making a lot of noise on the recruiting trail under coach Penny Hardaway, landing another ESPN Top 100 player this week. The class of 2019 so far is ranked anywhere from #2 to #5 in the nation, depending on who is doing the ranking, and they still have room for more. Several of the players signed the past couple of years under Hardaway had some connection to him from his days as a high school and AAU coach. Memphis won a game in the NIT this past season. While they lose most of their contributors to graduation, no other conference program is coming close to bringing in the talent the Tigers bring in for next year. www.espn.com/colleges/basketball/recruiting/school/_/id/235/class/2019
