Coach Ray was back in town today, at UDJ and probably other places as well. Having taken Corey Allen from Detroit to Atlanta earlier, looks like Coach Ray is looking to add some Cubs to the GSU roster. Probably has a pretty good pitch, too, with GSU coming off an NCAA tourney appearance and an Atlanta locale. UDJ Coach Donnelly posted this on Twitter: "Great catching up with Georgia State Assoc Head Coach Ray McCallum today. Getting it done down in ATL. Thanks for checking in on our student-athletes, Coach! @georgiastatembb " I know others on here do not agree with me but it seems funny that Donnelly was enamored with Ray's visit, or maybe he wasn't, but I do not remember Donnelly sending any players to Ray when he was here. Seems to me that Donnelly has a thing against UD and I was extremely pleased that he was not considered for the UD Head Coaching position.

Did we get a single player from UDJ during Ray's tenure? During Donnelly's tenure at UDJ? I can't recall a one.

There wasn't a ton of D1 talent at UDJ during the Ray years, even though they have been such big winners the past 5-8 years.
Of course there was the state champs trio of Cassius (MSU), Ike (Marquette) and Greg E (Illinois). Missing on those big men was a bummer to be sure, and perhaps we can snag Greg E still.
UDJ has had a few guys go D2 and see some success, most recently Noah King who was nat'l champ with Ferris State this past year.
So, all told we haven't had a lot of talent lost from our Jesuit family to other places. But, I'm be good if we changed all that and snagged rising seniors Friday and Thomas.

Did we get a single player from UDJ during Ray's tenure? During Donnelly's tenure at UDJ? I can't recall a one. I'll try to answer my own question: Here are UDJ players that made someone's all-state list (including honorable mention) as a senior in recent years: 2018: Elijah Collins -- to Michigan State for football Zach Winston -- to Albion 2017: Greg Egboigboden -- to UIC, then transferred to Illinois (offered by UD) Ike Eke -- to Marquette 2016: Cassius Winston -- to Michigan State (offered by UD) Matt Shearer 2015: Gary Collins 2014: Noah King -- to Ferris State 2012: Chris Jenkins -- to Colorado (offered by UD), then transferred to UD That's as far back as I have readily available. There were really 4 DI players here, none of whom came to UD in initially, though Jenkins finally did as a transfer. Cassius Winston may not have ever been realistic no matter how much encouragement Donnelly might have given, but certainly for the other three, including Ike Eke (whom we never offered to my knowledge, choosing to focus on Eggboigboden, but I'm sure Eke would have been welcomed if he'd expressed interest, UD would have been a realistic option. One of the non-DI players here is Noah King. King averaged 12 points, 3 plus rebounds, and 2 plus assists while shooting over 41% from three this year for the D-II national champs at Ferris State. He's a D-II player, so I don't want to get carried away, but he probably could have contributed in a very limited role at UD. I don't know if Ray ever considered him, or would have if Donnelly had pushed him. The Titans had an open scholarship that year that was not used. There's also Julian Dozier, currently an a rising senior, who left UDJ for a "prep" school after his sophomore year.

Good call, I've always been a fan of Dozier - at least from what I saw his FR and SO seasons. Not sure how his game has evolved/developed since heading out west. His a dimunitive PG to be sure, but he was getting more and more comfortable taking it among the big fellas. Verbal Commits shows him with offers from Oakland, EMU, So Miss and the most recent one is from W Kentucky. In a recent interview Julian cited he had interest in Arizona State, Washington and Cal (either indicating he has sights on a power 5 school, and/or that he likes it out west thus leaving the dreary midwest behind).

Then he teased us about transferring twice.

A family member of Winston's told me that we recruited Cassius hard and that he had a good relationship with Coach Ray. Cassius was always going high major (his Dad gave me a crazy look when I jokingly suggested that Winston shock the world and choose U-D) but I remember him wearing Detroit Titan basketball t-shirts during the AAU season before his senior year. I thought there might be a U-D possibility if he struggled at MSU and looked to transfer, but Cassius is one of the top guards in the Big Ten. He's not leaving East Lansing. I am very happy for him.
The parent of a Cub player told me that Ray was a constant visitor to UDJ while he was Titan coach, so he certainly targeted UDJ players. Too bad we couldn't land any (outside of Jenkins, of course).

Not to hijack the thread about Ray (post U of D), but Jay Smith was on Ray's staff at U of D. Always a class act, he's now at Kalamazoo College. He announced that earlier this summer, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Prayers are certainly with Jay for a speedy and full recovery

GSU reaches into Coach Ray's territory and snags a verbal commitment from an Indianapolis shooting guard. 247sports.com/Player/Jalen-Windham-46051654/I hope that Coach Davis and the coaches at Georgia State have at least some familiarity with each other. I would love to see a home and way set with Georgia State.

Reports state that Coach Mac will be moving to Tulane with Coach Hunter. All things considered, probably a good move for Coach. I'm not sure what he's making as Associate Head Coach at GSU, but I'm sure he'll be getting a good raise at Tulane, which is an AAC school. Coach Hunter is probably at Tulane for a minimum of four years, which is an important factor for assistant coaches to consider. Projected stability is always a good thing.
Best of luck with the Green Wave, Coach.
