Wow. Western Kentucky gets a commit from 5 star Class of '17 Mitchell Robinson, a 6-11 center from New Orleans. Generally rated in the top 15 in the class. Congrats to the Hilltoppers and Coach Rick Stansbury. Now if they can hold it until signing day in the fall. Could be the best player at WKU since Jim McDaniels 45 years ago.
Note this quote: "I can trust him," Robinson told ESPN on Wednesday afternoon. "He was the first one who really recruited me." So those efforts to identify and be first and persistent with guys you know you're not likely to get in the end sometimes pay off.

That's a great signing for WKU, and one of the few times I have seen the term "HUGE GET" used by one of the recruiting analysts and thought it actually was appropriate.
One quibble with the coverage I've read about this. A lot of credit is being given to Coach Stansbury for creating a strong relationship with Mitchell when he originally recruited him to Texas A&M. That's a legitimate point, but a lot of the coverage is failing to mention that a week ago Stansbury hired former North Carolina star Shammond Williams as an assistant coach. Williams just happens to be Mitchell's Godfather.
Congrats to the Hill Toppers.

Another big pick up for Western Kentucky, as four star 2017 recruit Josh Anderson commits to WKU. Anderson is ranked 72 and 44 in the class by ESPN and Rivals, respectively.

His Godfather, Shammond Williams, who was hired by WKU prior to Robinson committing, had left the program a week or two ago. From the Twitterverse: Jeff GoodmanVerified account @goodmanespn Western Kentucky freshman Mitchell Robinson has left campus, source told ESPN. Will be interesting to see if he is persuaded to return.

WKU released Robinson and he is free to pursue other opportunities. I've heard that the only restriction that WKU placed on him was to block him from signing with other Conference USA teams. Probably didn't need to do that, since if he does actually play any college ball, it will be at a Power Five school. The possibility exists that he will play overseas and just put his name in the 2018 NBA draft.

Probably didn't need to do that, since if he does actually play any college ball, it will be at a Power Five school. The possibility exists that he will play overseas and just put his name in the 2018 NBA draft. First everybody thought he would go to LSU, but after a visit the Tigers announced they were no longer recruiting him. Likely reason? Robinson, because he attended summer school at WKU, has to sit out next year as a transfer. And he's probably going to enter the NBA draft in the spring. So why waste a scholarship on him for a year? You could appeal to waive the sit out year, but who knows how that might go. Anyway, he then visited Kansas, tweeted "Kansas is nice" on arrival, and hasn't said another word. And--get this--he's visited New Orleans. The University. For New Orleans, heck, maybe it would be worth it to have him on scholarship for a year for the PR. Remember, he's from southern Louisiana. Anyway, now it looks like he'll just sit out the year. Why not play overseas? Well, I suppose he may just not want to. But also, he might hurt his draft stock. Suppose he doesn't play, and is a top 10 pick--he's gets a guaranteed contract for several million bucks. Let's say he plays overseas for $1mm and gets hurt, or doesn't play well and becomes a second round draft pick--he'd come out way behind. An odd situation grows odder because of the transfer rules.

WKU suffered another player loss as Jordan Brangers, a JUCO guard in the WKU class of 2017, reportedly left the team and the school. Brangers originally signed with Texas Tech before asking out of his NLI and signing with WKU. There are conflicting reports as to why Brangers left the team, with most speculation centering on academics.
Stansbury arrived with a lot of enthusiasm last year, but had a disappointing season, including a loss to a bad U of D team. He's not going anywhere, but I'm sure no one at WKU is happy with this off season.

Chalk up another for Rick Stansbury. Charles Bassey, a consensus top 5 national recruit from the Class of 2019, will reclassify to the Class of '18 and enroll at Western Kentucky. He is already a projected lottery pick in 2019. The 6–foot–11, five-star center played for Aspire Academy in Louisville, averaing 19.4 points, 12.8 rebounds and 3.4 blocks this past year. He already had offers from UCLA, Kansas, and a host of other blue bloods.
Of course, Mitch Robinson--whose signing started this thread--didn't work out all that well, so we will see what happens here.

I'm always happy to see a mid major pull off something like this. I look forward to the class of 2021, when the top ranked recruit in Michigan, encouraged by the success Mike Davis has early in his Detroit tenure, spurns UM, MSU, and others to become a Titan.
