I was downtown on business on Monday. On my way out of downtown I drove past the site for the new arena. It seems to be coming along very well, and the framework and scope look very impressive. I'm excited about the Titans being part of the future of that arena. Hopefully, we can be part of the event that opens the new place and maybe get a regular series going with Michigan, as Oakland has with MSU at the Palace. This video is from July 1 but there has been a lot of progress since then. www.clickondetroit.com/news/video-red-wings-little-caesars-arena-construction-progress-on-july-1-2016

I attended the Detroit Pistons season opener at LCA on Wednesday, getting my first experience with the new area. It was excellent. It's modern and cutting edge, but it also respects and recognizes the past. There are murals of Gordie Howe, Stevie Wonder, Joe Louis, and others. It is most definitely a Detroit venue, in every sense of the word. I look forward to Titan games and HL tournament contests in the building.
Also took the Q Line train for the first time on game night. Grabbed an early dinner at Z's Villa on Piquette and took their shuttle to LCA, but caught the Q Line on the way back after the game. Very convenient and inexpensive. Plus, a very good dinner at Z's.
There were several videos played on the big scoreboard (emphasis on "big", it's HUGE) during the course of the night, including recent shots of Earl Cureton and John Long.

There are several things that have disappointed me related to Titan basketball over the past two years, but one thing that really stands out is the inability of U of D and Oakland to take advantage of the conference tournament being held in Detroit. It was a great opportunity to raise the profile of the programs and the conference. We blew it, OU blew it, and I don't think we'll see the HL tourney in Detroit in this format again.
The worst thing about the past two years of the tourney was that I had no expectation that the Titans would do anything. Even in 2016 I had some hope, based on the Titans four game winning streak early in that year against Bowling Green, Toledo, Central Florida, and Northeastern. We also closed that year winning 6 of 9, so there was some reason to believe that we could get hot. In '17 and '18, I have been under no such illusion.
Having said that, I had planned to attend the championship game yesterday at the LCA, but when my nine year old niece gets sick and wants me to come to her house and take care of her, that's where I go.
I still recommend a trip to the LCA if you can make it, for a Pistons game or some other event. It's a great venue.

As OU and MSU announce their six year agreement for yearly games, with three at LCA and three at Breslin, my hope is that the Titans find some way to play games at LCA. We're the only D1 program located in the same City as the arena; it would be a shame if we didn't play there. Seems like a no brainer would be a U of M vs U-D series, with games alternating between Crisler Center and Little Caesar's Arena. Maybe the City can help us secure an event that features some higher profile teams coming in, like we see in Chicago and Indianapolis, and the Titans could be part of that in some way, maybe as a preliminary game against another mid major.
I don't know if anything like that will happen, but I hope we haven't played our last game at LCA.

This hurts. Oakland plays in Detroit’s new arena and we don’t? How sad.

I think it would be a win-win for the Titans and Michigan to hook up for a game every other year at LCA, rotating between downtown Detroit and Ann Arbor. There would be a lot more media interest in the matchup than games where Michigan plays Elon, Houston Baptist, or Appalachian State (on this year’s schedule). I don’t know the economics for sure, but I would think U-M might make just as much money by playing at LCA and getting a nice guarantee than they would by having an unattractive home game against a lesser team. It would be a good way for U-M to connect to the city, not let MSU have too much of a hold on that spotlight. And it would of course create a special game for Titan basketball fans to attend each year whether downtown or in Ann Arbor.

It seems we are well past the point where the big boys (MSU/UM) have to actually be fearful of us nipping at their heels and that by playing us somehow give us legitimacy that will negatively impact them. I'd like to think thats a mindset that can just retire already as its outdated. And for the big programs, the non conf homes games are indeed a bore when there is zero ties or reason to have any interest in the opponent (how many UM fans know where Elon is? Or Where Houston Baptist is? ) When I was a UNC student, the non conf games against Belmont or Elon were indeed a better atmosphere as you knew those local kids were playing their heart out and they would get some a little noisy group of fans behind the bench to travel. Often times more spirited than a Tuesday night ACC game against Va Tech or Ga Tech.

Honestly I would like it even if we played all 6 games at UM. It is close enough to go to. It just add another game on the schedule that I can easily go to. I would rather play Kentucky in the LCA on an every other year contract. I feel with the ties we have with their coach we could possible get it done.

You need two teams wanting to play each other. Michigan has never shown any interest in playing us on a regular basis since 1973. Maybe that will change with the new coach at UM.

I agree, I have no problem playing them in Ann Arbor every year, its a short trip and a nice pay day.
