I did a bit of research to see when Spencer Haywood made his decision to go pro. In a 8/1/69 Varsity News article about the basketball team’s prospects for the coming season, there is a reference fully anticipating his being on the squad for 1969-70. However two weeks later, on 8/16/69, Haywood would declare as professional basketball’s first hardship case and sign with the Denver Nuggets of the ABA. In the VN’s 10/10/69 interview with Jim Harding, the new University of Detroit head coach says “whether we’re going to be worse off or better off because of Spencer’s absence remains to be seen.” The 1969-70 Titans finished 7-18. I recall reading somewhere that Haywood said he would have not have left college prior to his eligibility expiring had U-D hired his old coach, Pershing High School’s legendary Will Robinson, a move that was anticipated in some quarters at the time.

Senior Spencer Haywood playing on the 1971 team with Cookie Marsh, Frank Russell, Jim Jackson, and Gerald Smith would likely have been a top 20 team. And who knows what other talent might have come along.

If Will Robinson gets the UofD job in 1969, we would've become the Georgetown of the Midwest.

Coach Rob was BELOVED in Detroit, especially in the basketball community. He'd have a strong chance of getting the best players in Detroit to stay home.

Of all the bad decisions, not hiring WR was the worst.
