New Mexico State's program issues first came to light in the public after an actual gunfight in which New Mexico State player Mike Peake shot and killed a University of New Mexico student on the UNM campus. The shooting took place on November 19, 2022. This week, the responsible district attorney in New Mexico determined that Peake would not face charges in the shooting, which was ruled self defense. Peake, a rising senior, is in the transfer portal, looking for college #4. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/37714969/ex-new-mexico-state-player-mike-peake-not-charged-shooting

New Mexico State certainly crashed their program, but to their credit, they didn't waste much time trying to recover. They cancelled the season, fired the coach, and quickly hired a respected mid major guy in Jason Hooten. Hooten had only 1 losing season in 13 years at Sam Houston State and won 61% of his games, including 67% in conference. Six 20 win seasons, four CIT trips, two NIT bids. New Mexico State has officially announced 7 new players for the 2022-23 roster, and two more have verbally committed this week. There is one high school player in the group and one JUCO; the rest are D1 transfers. Some will need a waiver or certification as a grad transfer for immediate eligibility, but the staff has done a good job of quickly getting some spots filled. Of course, New Mexico State has been very successful in recent years, and it's an attractive destination.
The Aggies will take a while to get back in stride, but I think that good foundation will save them from a complete collapse.

New Mexico State recently settled a lawsuit brought by two former players against the University. These players claimed they were victimized by the behavior of other teammates and coaches, alleging sexual assault and other violent acts. The case was settled with about $8 million being split between the two players, Shariku Odunewu and Deuce Benjamin. Benjamin's father former starred on the New Mexico State basketball team a couple of decades ago. The state's attorney general is reportedly still investigating the case from a criminal perspective. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/37929831/new-mexico-state-pay-8-million-settle-hazing-lawsuit

New Mexico State has moved on to Conference USA and are currently 1-1 after ... beating Sul Ross State University, a D3 school, and, if memory serves, the alma mater of Norm Cash.

Wondering how strong Grand Canyon's NIL game is? Here's a clue: Jacobe Koles, a 10 point per game scorer from TCU, just committed to the 'Lopes from the transfer portal. This will be Jakobe's third school. He started out at Butler.
