Sam's #2 game of the year, December 28-- High Point at MSU. Two of my all time favorite coaches going at it. I'm not surprised they are playing, because they are pretty good friends. I'd love to see HPU pull off the upset, but that's not likely. HPU has four Power Five teams on their schedule, including Calihan Mole's Notre Dame squad, Northwestern, and Kentucky.

Lindy's predicts the Big South this way:
1. Campbell 2. Winthrop 3. UNC Asheville 4. Hampton 5. Longwood 6. Radford 7. Gardner-Webb 8. Presbyterian 9. High Point 10. NC A&T 11. Charleston Southern 12. USC Upstate
Don't count out Winthrop, who lost their coach but went 23-2 last season and return a lot of production.

Head Coach Tubby Smith resigned from High Point in the midst of a second bout with Covid-19. I doubt he would have wanted to coach much longer in the current basketball environment of open pay to play and free agency. Smith was a head coach for 31 years and finished with a national championship and overall record of 642-370.

Alan Huss is doing a fantastic job in his first season at High Point, with the Panthers currently sitting at 20-4, 9-0, and in first place in the Big South. Of their four losses, one was by one point, one was by two point, and another was in overtime. Their largest margin of defeat is an eight point loss to Georgia. HPU only brought back one starter from last season, as Huss packed the roster with a mix of transfers, high schoolers, and JUCO players. The results have surpassed all expectations. They did a smart job of scheduling, easing into the year with some non-D1 competition as they got to know each other and the system. They are an excellent offensive team, with Huss carrying the offensive system that he used as an assistant at Creighton. Huss will be a hot commodity going forward, in part because he demonstrated the ability to put take a group of individuals who hadn't played together before and quickly mold them into a team. In today's world of NIL and the portal, that is crucial. I don't know how long he is going to be at HPU, but the school certainly has the facilities, support system, and commitment to remain an attractive coaching job when/if it comes open again. Go Panthers!

High Point is a very well run university that is raising a lot of money. They have a beautiful campus and a beautiful, right-sized arena on it. President Taylor should make a trip to High Point to talk about how they've turned a little backwater, Methodist college, in a dying textile town and on the verge of shutting down, into a dynamic, small university that is growing rapidly. They recently raised over $100 million for new schools of Law, Nursing, and Optometry.

Through a unified vision and a great plan, HPU has built up a basketball program to admire in a short period of time. The jewel of the program is their new arena. The fundraising for that project was kicked off by a $1 million dollar gift from Tubby Smith. A program needs a lot of donors, but it also needs a few BIG donors to make the kind of gifts that draw attention and bring others on board.
So, yeah, you can turn a team around quickly, but it helps to have benefitted from a long term plan that provides the program with all of the advantages it needs.

By the way, if you scroll up this thread a bit you'll find a photo PTC posted a couple years of Dean Cain and his son at High Point. Notice the background. High Point is unashamedly patriotic and religious--"God, Family, Country." At Christmas they've got a huge creche in the center of campus; American flags abound. The President is a hyperactive Lebanese immigrant, a true rags to riches story, who fervently believes the United States is the greatest country ever. They market this message, and it sells.
