Sam - what is your take on the consent probation agreement between the NCAA and High Point? Is that affecting Tubby's recruiting? It's a school wide 2-year probation plus a $15,000 fine for the department's failure to provide adequate notice to students in all sports who were losing their athletic scholarships. The violations occurred before Tubby arrived and were self-reported by the school. But since you follow Tubby and High Point, I was wondering if you could add to our understanding of the issue and if or how it is affecting Tubby. PTCT, I don't think it is effecting recruiting. It is a one time $15,000 fine and two years "don't do it again" probation. There are no scholarship or recruiting restrictions. The violation stem from the athletic department not providing writing notification to student athletes who were losing their scholarships or aid. Seems like they were told verbally, but the notification process was not followed. There are three guys signed for the High Point basketball class of 2019, a 6-4 guard, a 6-8 forward, and a 6-10 center, and all were considered excellent signings for the program, as each had multiple mid major offers. None were considered the kind of "reach" recruits you see when programs are having a hard time landing players. One of the assistant coaches teased no Twitter that a fourth recruit was signing and would be announced today. They seem to be doing okay. Even with Coach Smith running the program, coverage of High Point basketball is slim, as you would expect from a mid major program in a state with multiple high major basketball schools. As you imagine, I follow the team closely and one of the signings announced yesterday caught me by surprise; I hadn't heard the name before. I add this part to compare the HPU situation with our situation as Titan fans, where we also have to deal with a lack of coverage, especially when it comes to recruiting. It is certainly frustrating. It sounds like Tubby and Co. are doing a good job on the recruiting front. It will be interesting to see where the two grad transfer guards land. It seems like it is harder than ever to follow recruiting at UDM, no rumors, no leaks on whose visiting campus...nothing. It seems like we were able to get more information about recruiting before the internet age.

One is getting some high major interest, I think he is visiting Purdue. I haven't heard much about the other. HPU added a fourth member to their class on Friday, a guard from North Carolina. He is a high school teammate of the center who signed with HPU yesterday. All in all, a very good class for Coach Smith. They may be adding another player, as they put out a recent offer to a JUCO shooting guard/small forward, probably hoping to mitigate some of the scoring loss they experienced when the grad transfers left. highpointpanthers.com/news/2019/4/19/mens-basketball-high-point-signs-three-to-nlis.aspx

Tim Cameron, a seldom used back up guard this past season, has announced his intention to transfer from High Point. This is his second transfer. Cameron was originally ranked a four star recruit by ESPN and rated at three stars by Rivals. He started his college career at UTEP, but transferred to High Point after his freshman year. He never got traction or playing time last year under new coach Tubby Smith in his first season of eligibility at HPU.

Closing the loop on the two grad transfers from HPU, one guy ended up at Purdue and the other ended up at Cal State-Fullerton. Purdue I can understand, but is it really worth leaving a program that you had been at for years, where you would be the leading returning scorer next season, where the team was expected to be among the favorites for a conference title, just to go to Cal State-Fullerton? I don't know, maybe there were more than just basketball reasons behind the move. High Point has two scholarships open. My guess is that they use them on a couple of JUCO players, a shooting guard/small forward and a forward/center. Transfers and graduation hit those areas, and I can see Tubby Smith wanting to add a little maturity to those areas.

Summer workouts in progress at HPU. The Panthers are also looking to add another player or two to the class of 2019, so Detroit isn't the only one of my favorite teams still looking. :-)

Athlon predicts the Big South this way:
1. Gardner-Webb 2. Radford 3. Winthrop 4. Longwood 5. UNC Asheville 6. Charleston Southern 7. Hampton 8. High Point 9. Campbell 10.USC Upstate 11.Presbyterian
The magazine makes note of the fact that HPU's two top scorers left as grad transfers after the season, heading to Purdue and Cal State Fullerton. I think that the Panthers will be better than most predictions, just like a lot of Tubby's teams in the past. They bring back some vets, add a very good recruiting class, and get back their best front court player who missed all but two games with a foot injury last season. We'll see how it goes.

HPU lands their first recruit for the class of 2020, as Greensboro small forward Ahmil Flowers verbally commits to the Panthers. His other finalists were Western Carolina and Radford. Solid recruit for the Big South Conference.

Final Big South Standings: Winthrop Radford Gardner-Webb Longwood UNC-Asheville Hampton Charleston Southern USC Upstate Presbyterian Campbell High Point I was wrong thinking that HPU and Tubby Smith would avoid the cellar. On the other hand, they were only two games out of fifth th place in a crowded conference. They were a very young team, with three freshmen starting and two others in the rotation. They played a tough schedule and suffered some injury issues. Their top scorer, a sophomore guard, missed 16 of the team's 32 games. The Panthers need to hold on to their young players, and improve the roster through recruiting. They have commitments from two front court players for 2020. Coach Smith has recruited almost exclusively from the state of North Carolina since arriving at High Point.

"What does the HPU class of 2020 look like?", you ask. Well, none of you actually asked, but some of you have a general interest in what's going on in college basketball, and some of you are Tubby Smith fans, so here goes.
The Panthers had a signed class of six players, including a grad transfer from Drake. Unfortunately, the Drake transfer, a 6-7 forward, was denied a final year of eligibility by the NCAA for reasons that aren't clear. The young man is from Germany, and it could be related to his play for a club team there, years ago before he arrived at Drake.
The remaining five players include four from the home state of North Carolina. The best of that group might be 6-8/250 power forward Alex Holt. Holt averaged 17 points and 18 rebounds as a high school senior. He has been described as the best rebounder in NC high school ball the past season. Other players include a couple of 6-6 forwards and a guard. The guard reminds me of Titan signee Joe Liedel; a smallish guard said to be an excellent shooter, but with no other known D1 offers. He was the only Panther commit who didn't have multiple D1 officers.
Signee number five is the one that got the most buzz, a shooting guard from Virginia named Jaden House. House was a late reclassification to the class of 2020 from 2021, and he had offers from Old Dominion and Georgetown as a 2021 recruit. HPU went after him HARD once he reclassified, and managed to bring him on board. HPU is in the Big South, which ranks near the bottom of the D1 basketball conferences, so that was a big signing for Coach Smith.
Losing the grad transfer opens up another scholarship for the class of 2020. I wouldn't be surprised to see the team look for another front court grad transfer to fill it.
In terms of official announcements, HPU announced their class on April 21, and then added an official update when House signed.

High Point is a beautiful campus in a less-than-beautiful small Southern town. They hired an alum who made it big in business as president a decade ago, and he has used his connections to attract a large number of large gifts. In his time the school, which is about the same enrollment as Detroit Mercy, has spent over a billion dollars on campus and program building. The president is in the top five highest paid college presidents in the US.

Big South 2020-21 standings:
Winthrop 17-1, 23-2 Radford 12-6, 15-12 Campbell UNC-Asheville G-Webb Longwood Hampton High Point SC Upstate Presbyterian Charleston Southern
Winthrop was by far the class of the league and one of the best mid major stories in college basketball.
High Point started two freshman, two sophomores, and a D2 transfer for most of the season and definitely felt some growing pains on their way to an eight place finish. They did record their first conference tournament win since 2016. Injuries to the two projected starters put the team behind the curve from the start.
Since the end of the season, the Big South is getting hit by the transfer portal as some of the top talent in the league is leaving for "greener" pastures.

High Point went 3-0 on their trip to Puerto Rico, but it was basically a covert operation. Very little coverage from the University on the trip, outside of a few short video clips on Twitter. They didn't even post the final scores of the games. The lack of attention was an opportunity lost. If the Titans ever covered a trip like that, I would be picketing in front of Calihan to protest the lack of coverage.

High Point takes on Kentucky at Rupp Arena on New Year's Eve. Big Blue Nation will be honoring Coach Smith that night.
It's funny; the Kentucky fanbase and media were hard on Smith when he was there, even after winning the title, but over the past several years the school and the fans have made it a point to praise him. The program is a lot flashier under Cal, but he and Tubby have the same number of national titles at Lexington. And Smith never had a year at Kentucky like they had in 20-21.
Classy post from Cal.
