This search has to be a book, or a podcast series, or mini-doc, or something. Because it's past unbelievable at this point.

Danny Glover has been offered the role of Mike Davis, but hasn’t said for sure if he’ll take it. Jermaine Jackson of the Jackson 5 has been cast as JJ Sr. Not sure if it will be a comedy, drama or horror genre. Will it have a happy or sad ending? Still TBD.

JJ’s contract will not be renewed. He accepted this news very professionally and he is leaving on VERY good terms and will always be a Titan Great. J3 will remain on the team and play for Coach Davis. Looks for several new player announcements in early July, shortly after the official Davis announcement.

I hope that is true about JJ leaving on good terms. One reason I don't like hiring old alums/stars is that most coaches end up getting fired. And thus eventually these guys go from being fondly remembered heroes to failed coaches, often with a loss of good will. JJ is a reminder of great days for the program, and as a guy who put together a nice little NBA career has a legitimacy to help the program with recruits. I assume that JJ will stay active in HS/AAU coaching and still be in a position to guide kids our way. There have been a lot of very vague, unsubstantiated rumors swirling around JJ the last 5 years, and I hope that will stop. My regret is that, after getting where we did, Bacari wasn't let go last fall after the SMD, with JJ given the season to see what he could do.

I'm also glad JJJ is sticking around. Poor Titans96 will go nuts.

So, let's say it's definitely Davis. If he's not going to be introduced until July, I assume that's something with finishing his contract term at SoTex, so he can't really recruit either--not that there's much left to recruit in any case. That perhaps leaves us looking at a roster of: Back Court: McFolley -- it appears he's staying, which I think is a smart move for him unless he just doesn't like UofD as a school. JJJ -- Hyperion says he's staying, and it would be late for him to transfer Antoine Davis -- let's assume he follows Dad Front Court Long Eichler Ballantyne Blackshear (I hope he is ready physically to play) T. Jones (?) - will he be eligible? Trayvon Reed ( ) - would the 7-footer come over as a grad transfer w/ Coach Davis? Even with a couple pretty big question marks, that would be enough to find a decent enough 7 to 9 man rotation, I think, not great, but not the disaster I saw shaping up a month ago. Then there's the walk-ons and whomever else Davis could bring from SoTex (in another post I mentioned incoming freshman guard Damon Harge and a couple jucos he's signed) plus anyone else he can scrounge up. I'd love to see Greg Egboigboden nab one of the scholarships. We shall see.

I'm optimistic, but I think we'll be able to pull an even better roster together than that. I think Davis will bring all the JUCOs from TxSU and some suprises.

Why will the announcement not be official until early July? I know a lot of government jobs cant be filled until July 2nd when the new fiscal year begins. I don't know how that applies to UDM.

This didn’t stop something like 50 other D-1 schools from going ahead and filling their vacant MBB head coaching positions in a timely manner. That said, maybe there is something unique in play in the UDM situation. Detroit Mercy does run on a July 1 to June 30 fiscal year cycle.

And if it really is a question of not wanting to pay Davis 3 weeks salary, that seems stupid--it's like $25 grand including benefits.

I just can't imagine the hold up is based on the June 30 fiscal year end date for UDM, it doesn't make any sense THAT is the hold up.
Someone on here, can't recall who, suspected that Davis has some kind clause with his contract at TSU to stay on thru 6/30 (for whatever reason). That seems the most plausible reason that its on his end not on ours.
Or, we actually are slow playing this for some reason...waiting on the next Board of Trustees meeting, waiting as Davis lawyers out negotiate ours, waiting on the search committee to do some extraneous formal step they've decided they need to do that drags the process out longer, who knows.
I do know that at THIS point if Davis isn't hired, I think both message boards will just melt in flames of fury and it won't be pretty.

I suggested previously that Davis might have such a provision in his contract. That said, I would think TSU would want to waive any such financial penalty to their departing coach just so they can more publicly start the process to fill their own vacancy. The UDM Trustees do not have to approve a coaching hire, so that doesn’t explain the holdup.
