It was the 31st annual Fr Vincent Welch Memorial Dinner - raises money for UDM Athletics and Loyola HS. It's a great event at the Polish Club and always has a few interesting folks there. This year Jeff Blashill and Frank Tanana were the main honorees. I encourage more and more Titan fans to go next year and support UDM athletics! www.fatherwelch.org/event/ Frank Tanana! Remarkable career transition from hard throwing strike out guy to successful off speed pitcher. One of my favorite Tigers of that era. Thanks for the description of the event and the comments from Coach Davis, TTH.

Well, if you don't know about it, they have done a very poor job publicizing it. Actually sounds like an event you would champion. Edit: My point being that you are basically a Man About Town in Detroit , and a big Titan backer. Seems like they would make SURE a person like you are up to date on this type of thing.

It is curious that it is never advertised/promoted among the typical UDM channels. The gentleman who started it is on the UDM board of trustees and I know a long time UDM supporter. Pres Garibaldi has appeared at the few I've been to and I've always seen some 'big wigs' of UDM supporters there (other trustees, Absopure founder, etc). Perhaps there was a specific decision, for whatever reason, NOT to pump it out to the UDM mail lists. Having said that -- now hopefully some of you know about it, and will make it out next year. 2 years ago I got to meet and talk with Ted Lindsey, and this year I had a quality 10 minute conversation with Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill. Plus its at the Polish Hall so you get a nice hearty meal too.

Thanks for the description of the event and the comments from Coach Davis, TTH. Sam, again we think alike. Tanana was an interesting guy with the way he totally revamped his pitching style when he lost the velocity on his fastball. I thought it was amazing that he was able to have such success as essentially a junk pitcher. I don't mean junk in a bad way, either. I always appreciate guys (in any sport) who are willing to put in the time and hard work to overcome obstacles. It's one of the reasons I was a big fan of NJ on the Titans. I know the analogy is somewhat different but Njoku was terribly raw when he arrived in Detroit and worked his tail off to become a pretty solid D-1 big man at the end. He worked tirelessly to improve in a sport where he was a relative novice. By contrast, Tanana was always a pitcher who relied on overwhelming hitters with power pitching. To get to the level of a solid MLB finesse pitcher, though, he too had to almost start from scratch.

Your right Commish! How could someone think they are true basketball fans and not like this guy and pull for his success and the success of this program.

Love the quotes from Davis, don't like the headline or tone of the article. "Ready to prove himself"? By any objective standard, Davis has proven himself a capable coach on both ends of the college basketball spectrum.

And to close the entire process up (amazing you can hire a coach in such a short time period!!) Texas Southern will hire Nevada's Johnny Jones as its next head basketball coach, per a source. Former head coach at LSU. For the 2018-18 season at least, TSU will be following the buy game heavy scheduling philosophy of Coach Davis. tsusports.com/schedule.aspx?schedule=124

And of course, we really screwed Texas Southern, which now has to start a search mid-way through June--which we all thought was way too late to be ending a search; just lost their star recruit (though admittedly, they only had him for a few days), and may lose other players here late in the season. Per online reports, Texas Southern moved quickly to fill their coaching job, and actually got a pretty good one. Johnny Jones, most recently the associate head coach of a very good Nevada team and previously the head coach at North Texas and LSU, is reportedly the choice. Jones had a bunch of twenty win seasons and a couple of NCAA tourney appearances at North Texas, and then took the LSU job. He put together some solid seasons at LSU before a suffering disastrous year five and was fired. Jones is a good coach and will probably do well at Texas Southern. He's the kind of hire that will be a plus when the program tries to hold on to current players and recruits. Kudos to the TSU administration for moving quickly to fill that opening and getting an accomplished, experienced coach. Edit: Kudos to Scout for being the first to break the news here. Texas Southern hiring Johnny Jones looks even smarter as TSU comes back from an 18 point deficit to defeat Baylor. I am happy for them.

Saw something cool at Calihan after the Bowling Green game Tuesday night. As I was leaving I was walking with my friend Curt, whom some of you have met, and Coach Jones, a retired longtime basketball coach in the Port Huron area. As we walked towards the door, Coach Davis was sitting at the media table talking to someone, but then he noticed Coach Jones. Coach Davis cut short his conversation and came down the steps to say hello to Coach Jones and shake his hand. They spoke for a few minutes. This was a few minutes after the conclusion of the game. Now, Coach Jones is retired, so he's not someone that Coach Davis is being nice to for the purpose of recruiting a player. It seemed to be a genuine gesture of respect towards an elder. I was impressed.

I am thinking if everything fell in place for coach Davis and someone in California put out their campfire or the NCAA ruled in our favor for once. We could very well be at 6-2 or 5-3. I for one never expected to have a chance for a winning season especially after the Davis staff had such a late start and had to dig through what all the other programs had decided to pass on. I think it is fantastic that this staff has been able to recruit the young men on our team and win or lose from this point on I extend kudos to the players and staff. I feel watching them extend maximum effort is worth the 1000 + mile trip and I wish more so called Titan Fans could extend a little more effort to get their butts down to Calihan to support the effort of this team and make it more enjoyable for these young men and their fellow Titan fans. I know Coach Davis has made favorable comments about the Titan fan base but I for one am embarrassed by the support and effort of my fellow Titan Fans. I feel this is a special group and we should be thrilled to have them. I enjoy the ESPN3 broadcasts but in the long run it might be costing us more than we realize.

I think the fans will come back with just a little more progress. We hired a great guy. I guess what I am trying to say is that or Fans have the opportunity to hasten the progress of this program but I feel they are to complacent to put forward a little extra effort. The coaches and players are making the maximum effort that is expected of them but the fan base seems to think they deserve more than effort. If we are waiting for more effort then we are pretty stupid because the effort is there. The only thing lacking is our effort. Every one wants to be associated with a winner but not everyone is willing to supply the effort necessary to become a winner. Titan Mike, Sam, Chuck, Faithfulfan, Tom and the others who are always there shouldn’t always be the ones out there trying to win the ball for our side. The rest of us have to help on the boards if we want to win. They can not always be the ones out there trying to win the ball so that we can Turn it over. Maybe we deserve the Bacaris of the basketball world.
