College basketball practice officially begins today. :-) Even though they could start practicing today, the press release announcing the coaching staff said our Titans are going to have their 1st practice Thursday. I guess Davis just wants to give the other teams in the Horizon League a fighting chance this season😉

That means you take 12 days off anyway between today and November 6, or in our case, it will now be 10 days off between Thursday and Nov. 5.

I get what you are saying and figured there must be a total practice number limit prior to game #1, but with a new staff and a new team (and out with the old and in with the new) and (starting a new era in Titan Basketball etc, etc, etc), you'd figure they'd be excited and in a hurry to get started. Maybe they need the extra days to figure out who's on the roster and to finish writing up the bios for release to the fans

But attendees need to be careful because the rosters will be written in pencil. They could be smudged by the food.

Get used to it, because next year it's all road games! I expect pretty soon Davis will volunteer to have us play all our conference games on the road, too.

You know, with Tubby Smith seemingly closing out his career at mid major High Point, I would love to see a home and home with HPU. HPU is already traveling to Valpo this year, so they aren't adverse to Midwest trips. Granted, this game is bigger for me than it would be for most Titan fans, but it would be a fresh opponent with a marketing angle. Maybe...

Re: our non-conference opponents.
Even Loyola MD's conference has a slightly stronger pre-season KenPom rating than the HL.
FWIW (and pre-season computerized statistical models are questionable), here are the non-conference opponent KenPom ratings.
Western MI: 214 Temple: 82 Cal: 157 Loyola MD: 298 Bowling Green: 188 Hampton: 240 Eastern MI: 113 Kent St: 182 Akron: 181 Dayton: 100 Toledo: 119 Ohio: 132 Xavier: 55

What's interesting about the KenPom pre-season evaluation of us is that it has us playing much less efficiently on offense and defense than Mike Davis' historical KenPom stats. Also, its pre-season ratings only count the impact of top 30 freshmen upon a team's rating. So, any potential positive impact by Antoine Davis, Boe Nguidjol, or Marquis Moore are not a part of the pre-season rating. Same goes for any JUCOs and transfers. Unless they had prior D-1 experience, they are not counted in the pre-season evaluation.
Ken Pom assumes that we will average 75 offensive possessions per game. That is higher than last year's team average of 72. No Mike Davis coached team has ever averaged that many offensive possessions. The typical Davis team averages about 65-66 offensive possessions per game.
Therefore, I am not putting much stock in this pre-season rating because I think that Josh McFolley's shots per minute stats from the last 3 years are skewing the Ken Pom pre-season rating too low based upon the historic tempo and efficiency of all Davis coached teams.

I don't think Coach Davis even knows his starting 5 yet, so how outsiders can somehow accurately prognosticate what this team will look like (down to the nitty gritty of number of possessions) just is impossible.
Seeing the once proud HL now being materially lower than the Summit, yet again, is indeed humbling.
