Is Coach Cal in trouble at Kentucky? The grumblings among boosters and fans is getting louder. As of today, Kentucky's 2023-24 roster has seven players: 5 freshmen and 2 sophomores. That 2012 title year is fading in the distance past. It's been eight years since UK made the Final Four, which is unacceptable to most Wildcat fans. Truthfully, I don't think Cal is going anywhere for awhile. His buyout must be HUGE. This article gives a little more insight into the situation. I keep hearing that Cal has ticked off a lot of boosters in Kentucky, including a very prominent couple. The rest of the summer and next season should be interesting. www.aseaofblue.com/2023/6/8/23754244/john-caliparis-disconnect-crippling-kentucky-basketballKentucky signed a 2023 recruit today, a shooting guard named Joey Hart. He's a three star recruit who was previously committed to UCF. I can't remember the last time Kentucky signed a three star recruit. This addition likely won't calm the restless fans at UK. Funny story about Hart, who is from Linton, Indiana. After he de-committed from UCF, Indiana invited him to campus on a recruiting visit. According -to an interview with Hart's AAU coach, Joey asked Indiana coach Mike Woodson, "Why are you recruiting me now? I've lived 45 minutes away for the past four years." Now, the correct answer to that is probably that Hart was a plan B/C recruit that IU was talking to in case some other options fell through. However, I imagine that if Hart really asked that question, that wasn't the answer that Woodson gave him. I would also guess that if Woodson was considering Hart as an option, he stopped considering him after that question. It's good to be confident, but you probably shouldn't be cocky to a big time coach who is recruiting you, especially an old school guy like Woodson. Unless Hart is a lot better than he's shown, I don't expect him to produce much at Kentucky. The Wildcats already have two five star guards in the class of 2023, along with a four star guard ranked in the top 50 nationally. But he'll probably have a good time with his off the court Kentucky experience.

They landed several new players, including Croatian Center Zvonimir Ivisic and much traveled West Virginia transfer Tre Mitchell (at his fourth college). These players hope to mix well with the nation's number one recruiting class. The Wildcats also took the gold medal at this summer's GLOBL Jam Games in Canada, going 4-0 against competition. Things look brighter than they did after the loss to Kansas State in the NCAA tournament and losing four players to the portal after that, but questions remain. The front court is thin, and we know that not every five star freshman lives up to the hype. Cal still has a growing number of detractors in the Kentucky fanbase. For now, ESPN ranks Big Blue Nation #17 in the preseason poll, and they come in at #16 for CBS Sports.

Kentucky landed a commitment from 2024 point guard Boogie Fland. This is the 15th five star point guard recruit that Coach Cal has landed since taking over the Kentucky job in 2009.

Jacob Wilkins, a four star recruit in the class of 2025 and the son of Bulldog and NBA great Dominique Wilkens, has verbally committed to Georgia. He's the second member of the Wilkens family to follow in Dominique's steps, as his cousin Damien Wilkins played for Georgia in the early 2000s. Damien is the son of Gerald Wilkens, Dominique's brother, and a fine NBA player in his own right. I remember when 'Nique was a freshman at Georgia. I'm getting old. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/38789552/jacob-wilkins-son-nba-great-dominique-commits-georgia

Dennis Gates channels Mike Davis after the Tigers go to 0-13 in the SEC without D'Moi Hodge and Tre Gomillion. His former boss, Leonard Hamilton, will probably tell him to watch his language. Obviously, we focus Mike Davis because this is a Titan message board, but pretty much every week some D1 coach is publicly going off on his players the way our staff sometimes does. I'm not a fan of it, but it's not unusual, and I get that it comes from frustration and wanting to win.

As expected, Joey Hart was not an impact player at UK, but even I thought he would score more than three points on the year. He played in three games, totaling 10 minutes. After the season he hit the portal. He committed to Ball State today, which will be a better level for him.
