Saturday, March 30
Texas Tech 75, Gonzaga 69. Surprise!
Virginia 80, Purdue 75 (OT). Oh man. Amazing finish to regulation--Virginia snatches victory from defeat, and from Carsen Edwards, who scored 42. Too bad for Big 10.

Sunday, March 31 Two great games today, especially MSU/Duke.
Michigan State 68, Duke 67. Does anyone think Kenny Goins made the wrong decision by passing up a scholarship at UD to walk on at MSU? And how did Cassius Winston get so good without leaving home to play at a "prep school" in some distant state?
Auburn 77, Kentucky 71 (OT). Jared Harper was really great and Auburn upset Kentucky in an all-SEC quarterfinal.
And note the Big 10 "almost" tournament: MSU to Final Four; Purdue lost in OT after an amazing play by Virginia forced the OT; Iowa lost in OT; Maryland lost on a bucket with 1 second left; Minnesota lost to conference member Michigan State.
Tournament Performance by Conference: ACC : 13-6 SEC : 12-6 Big Ten: 13-7 WCC : 3-2 Big 12: 7-5 PAC 12: 4-3 Ohio Valley: 2-2 MAC : 1-1 Southern: 1-1 Big West: 1-1 Summit: 1-1 (includes 16 seed play-in win) Northeast: 1-1 (includes 16 seed play-in win) American: 3-4 Big East: 1-4 Atlantic 10: 0-2 Mountain West: 0-2 All other conferences: 0-1

I really like superior guards in big games. The PG for Auburn is stepping up. Williamson is a good player but he gets away with a lot especially the chicken wings.

Monday, April's Fools Day South Florida 63, DePaul 61. David Collins hit a layup with 2 seconds left as USF (23-13) defeated DePaul (18-16) in the CBI championship. But they're not champs of the prestigious CBI yet--under the tournament's unique, best two out of three format, they'll play in Chicago on Wednesday, and if DePaul wins, a another game in Chicago on Friday. Collins, a sophomore, led all scorers with 23. Attendance in Tampa was 2375.
And kudos to Northwest Missouri State, which defeaed Point Loma on Saturday, 64-58, to win the D-II championship and finish a perfect 38-0.

Tueday, April 2
Horizon Green Bay 87, Texas Southern 86 (OT). The Horizon lives on! Actually, this looks like it was an exciting game. PJ Pipes missed the front end of a 1+1 with 15 seconds left in regulation, allowing Texas Southern to tie it on a bucket by Jeremy Combs with 7 seconds left. In the OT, Combs made another basket with 8 seconds left to give TSU the lead, but Sandy Cohen came back and scored with 1 second and change on the clock. TSU got off a desperation three at the buzzer but it was off the mark. Cohen finished with 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists for Green Bay (21-16), which will face Marshall on Thursday in the CIT final. Texas Southern winds up 24-14. 2269 in attendance at Kress.
NIT Semifinals Lipsomb 71, Wichita State 64. Little Lipscomb (29-7) hits the NIT finals behind 34 points from senior Garrison Matthews. Wichita State finishes 22-15. Attendance at the Garden was a disappointing 4599.
Texas 58, Texas Christian 44. Texas (20-16) stifled TCU (23-14) to reach the NIT final. The win avenged two regular season losses to TCU.
CIT Marshall 80, Hampton 78. I nearly passed out from the excitement as Marshall (22-14) closed the first half with an 18-3 run for a 13 point lead. But Hampton fought back and the teams were no more than 1 possession apart at any time from the 10 minute mark of the second half until Marshall's CJ Burks put the Herd up 4 with 9 second left on a pair of free throws. Marshall senior Jon Elmore led all scorers with 28 points, giving him over 2600 in his career. Jermaine Morrow, the nation's #7 scorer, had 15 for Hampton (18-17). 4122 in attendance at Marshall.

Wednesday, April 3
DePaul 100, South Florida 96 (OT). DePaul evened the CBI final at 1 game each with an overtime win in Chicago. LaQuincy Rideau had 35 for USF (23-14), but DePaul (19-16) countered with 32 from Max Strus and a career best 28 points and 16 rebounds from center Paul Reid. Strus has averaged 29 points in 5 CBI games. They'll play the final game on Friday in Chicago.

Thursday, April 4 Horizon Marshall 90, Green Bay 70. They are Marshall, and winners of the CIT. Green Bay actually led this game by 7 points with 13:40 to play, and was still up 59-58 with 12 minutes to play. But it was all Marshall from there on out. Marshall finishes 23-14. A Green Bay win would have guaranteed them the 2nd longest winning streak in the country going into 2020, but they'll end with a loss and a 21-17 record. It's the 2nd year in a row the Horizon has contributed the runner-up to this prestigious, venerable tournament. 5748 in attendance at Marshall.
Other Texas 81, Lipscomb 66. Lipscomb's NIT dreams go thud in the final. Take that scrappy mid-majors! Texas finishes 21-16, Lipscomb 29-8. It's Texas's second NIT title, having beaten North Carolina State in the final way back in 1978. A disappointing 4051 in attendance at the Garden.

April 5 Well, finally all the "other" tournaments end.
South Florida 77, DePaul 65. In the CBI final, USF (24-14) jumped out to an early 17 point lead, then fought off a rally that brought DePaul to within 1 early in the second half, and gradually pulled away. DePaul drew 1876 for the game. And what does this mean for the Horizon? It means that Cleveland State will start next season with the 4th longest winning streak in the country (2).

Saturday, April 6 Texas Tech 61, Michigan State 51. State's comeback fell short and Tech ended the game on a 9-0 run.
Virginia 63, Auburn 62. An exciting game, if not always a well-played one. Kyle Guy made 3 free throws with 1 second left to put UVa in the final.
