3,800 in attendance for OU's first game vs Toledo, 2,800 at last nights game vs Western (a cold Monday night). Good numbers especially considering they've lost so much known, star power of recent years.
The lack of Horizon success against D1 opponents is really quite something. Is this the 3rd of 4th year of his phenomenon? And, its all occurring with teams playing what would be considered winnable games. It's not as if all of these losses are being accrued vs national powers for payday games.

Horizon IUPUI 76, BC 69. Camron Justice scored 29 points as IUPUI caught BC napping in Beantown. A nice birthday present for coach Jason Gardner, who turned 38 today. I think I said in my season preview that IUPUI was being underrated. If I didn't, I'll go back and edit it to say that. Evan Hall helped Justice with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Justice went 13-13 from the foul stripe.
Wright State 84, Toledo 74. Cole Gentry--not heretofore a big scorer--dumped in 30 points as Wright State beat a solid Toledo squad. Wright's big three of Gentry, Loudon Love (14 points and 12 rebounds) and Billy Buckets Wampler (17 points) combined for 22 of 39 from the floor. Center Luke Knapke had 20 for Toledo (2-1).
The first good night for the Horizon this year.
Other Titan Non-Conference Opponents: #1 Duke 84, Eastern Michigan 46. Maybe Coach Davis is right--EMU's wins over Rochester, Drexel, and Goshen didn't seem to prepare them to take on top-ranked Duke. OTOH, maybe nothing would have. The Eagles shot just 3 free throws all night, so the refs weren't helping them none, neither.
Other Games: #18 Michigan 73, #8 Villanova 46. Some scores you look at and just go "Wow." Wow. Michigan by 27. Michigan by 27 at the half. At Villanova! The Wolverines forced 21 turnovers, while committing just 7, and shot 51% to Nova's 31%. Wow. A Big Big 10 kickoff to the Gavitt Games.
#11 Michigan State 80, Louisiana Monroe 59. Former walk-on Kenny Goins had 15 rebounds for MSU (2-1).
#9 Auburn 103, Mississippi College 52. #10 Kentucky 96, North Dakota 58. #19 Clemson 74, Sam Houston State 59. Indiana 96, #24 Marquette 73. Another Big Big 10 win in the Gavitt Games. But Indiana (3-0) always hints at a return to dominance early in the year, and never delivers.
Nebraska 80, Seton Hall 57. It's not just that the Big 10 swept tonight's Gavitt Games with the Big East, it's that none of the three games were even remotely close. Loyola 75, Niagara 62. Florida 82, La Salle 69. The Citadel 137, Johnson University 60. The Citadel has scored 285 points in its last two games, although Johnson University and Mid-Atlantic Christian aren't getting any votes yet in the AP poll.
Mid Major Upset of the Night: Radford 63, Notre Dame 60. Radford refused to go away, and finally overcame Notre Dame in the closing minutes, behind 20 points from Caleb Tanner and 16 points and 11 rebounds from Ed Polite--if you please. Outside of John Mooney, who had 24 points and 12 rebounds, the Irish shot 31% from the floor. Radford (3-0) beat UIC earlier, a Horizon loss that doesn't look quite so bad now.
Runner Up: Seattle 78, Washington State 69.

Nice recap.
No edit needed, Commissioner. I recall you saying that IUPUI would be overlooked again.
I watched the first half of EMU at Duke. Duke pressed EMU, forced a lot of turnovers, kept EMU's guards from getting the ball inside to Thompson IV and Minnie, and forced EMU's guards to take low percentage 3 point shots. EMU did not play its zone the same way as we play ours. I believe that at one point, it was Duke 40 EMU 9. Coach Murphy looked disengaged from his team and just sat back and watched the carnage. At least in the TV shots. Admittedly, the TV does not show viewers everything happening on the sidelines. EMU was too slow vs Duke.
Wright State's freshman Skyelar Potter played a big role in this one. He hit two big 3 point shots (both from the corner) in the second half and grabbed 11 rebounds.
But I also would tune into the IUPUI game (thanks to ESPN+ and ESPN3). IUPUI's experience just outplayed BC in the second half. Hall and Goss on the boards were great. IUPUI took 14 more shots than BC - mostly due to +11 offensive rebounds (16-5) - Hall had 6. Weatherford is a better PG than the pre-season pundits assessed. IUPUI will beat out Oakland in the HL and could challenge for the regular season title if the experienced guys remain healthy. (Somewhere, I also wrote that IUPUI was one of three HL teams that could be a positive surprise this year.)

Ask anyone who knows me; I can hold a grudge forever.

Thursday, November 15
Horizon: Detroit at California, cancelled. This would have been an interesting game for our team, and a chance to beat a P5 team on the road. But it was cancelled due to the bad air quality from the wildfires engulfing much of California.
UIC 100, William & Mary 95 (OT). UIC played it's second straight overtime game, and this time came out on top for its first win of the year. Tarkas Ferguson had 25 and Godwin Boahen 24.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: Bowling Green 75, North Carolina Central 60. Demajeo Wiggins had his 4th straight double-double (22 points, 13 rebounds) for 2-2 Bowling Green.
Other Games of Passing Interest: Central Michigan 67, CSU-Bakersfield 55. CMU is off to a 3-0 start. They limited Bakersfield to 30% shooting tonight.
#3 Gonzaga 94, Texas A&M 71. Iowa 77, #13 Oregon 69. The Big 10 was expected to be down this year, but they've had a real nice week. Iowa shot 35% and committed 14 turnovers to 8 by Oregon, but the Hawkeyes made 29 of 33 free throws, and that was more than the margin of victory. UConn 83, #15 Syracuse 76. Take that, ACC, for leaving the Huskies stuck in the AAC. #16 Virginia Tech 73, Ball State 64. #21 TCU 77, Fresno State 69. #23 Purdue 92, Appalachian State 70.
Ohio State 69, Creighton 60. The Buckeyes blew a big lead but pulled it out late, as the Big 10 continued to show well in the Gavitt Games. DePaul 72, Penn State 70. The Big East managed to squeak out one Gavitt Games win tonight, down at the bottom of the league lineups, when DePaul won in overtime. The OT was disaster all around--DePaul outscored the Nittany Lions 4-2 as the two teams combined missed 11 of 12 shots from the floor. But Trent Buttrick hit a couple free throws with 30 seconds left and DePaul advanced to 3-0. Penn State (2-1) wasted 25 points and 12 rebounds from Lamar Stevens.
Western Kentucky 83, Valparaiso 71. Davidson 57, Wichita State 53. A couple of high mid-majors (or low High majors, or something). St. Joe's 89, Wake Forest 69. Charlie Brown had 26 for St. Joe's (3-0). Wake Forest, with only a Chaundree Brown, couldn't compete. BYU 85, Oral Roberts 65. I'm sure there's some deep religious meaning here, though I don't know what. Yoeli Childs had 24 points and 13 rebounds for BYU (3-1).
Mid Major Upset of the Day Northeastern 68, Alabama 52. In Charleston, South Carolina, the Huskies (2-1) scored the game's first 8 points and were never really threatened, giving 'Bama (2-1) a thorough whuppin'.

Friday, November 16
Horizon League: The Horizon lost a trio of road games you'd expect them to lose, but picked up 4 wins, including a difficult road win for Green Bay and a YSU win on a quasi-neutral floor in New York. Not a bad night.
UNLV 74, Oakland 61. Xavier Hill Maas had his second 30 point game of the season, but UNLV (2-1) went on an early 14-0 run and was never really threatened in this one.
Cincinnati 74, Milwaukee 63. Milwaukee (0-4) continued its bad habit of playing just well enough to lose, no matter the quality of the competition. Tonight, it was good competition, so the Panthers played a pretty solid game, taking an early lead and ending the first half in a tie. Every time UC (2-1) would get a couple buckets up, Milwaukee came back, taking the lead for the last time midway through the second half. An 11-2 spurt then finally gave UC a little breathing room, and the Bearcats sealed the win by going 8-8 from the foul line in the final 1:06. The final score was Cincy's biggest margin. Carsen Warren-Newsome led Milwaukee with 18 points and 7 assists.
Richmond 78, IUPUI 70. IUPUI came up short in its effort to get impressive, back-to-back road wins after beating BC earlier in the week.
Northern Kentucky 77, UNC-Asheville 50. The Norse are off to a 4-0 start after drilling Asheville (1-2) at the BB&T Arena in Covington. Jalen Tate had 16 points and Drew McDonald 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Cleveland State 84, South Carolina State 69. This was a slow, grind it out win for CSU (2-2) against surprisingly stubborn SC State (1-3). CSU played a solid game--only 8 turnovers, 49% shooting (33% from three), a balanced attack led by Stefan Kenic with 19--but didn't get a double digit lead until the final five minutes.
Youngstown State 94, Columbia 83. Juco transfer Kendale Hampton, who had 22 points in YSU's first 3 games, had 32 tonight, including 7 of 10 from three points. The Penguins (2-2) overcame an early 11 point deficit in the Bronx. Mike Smith had 31 points for Columbia (0-2).
Green Bay 82, Eastern Washington 78 (OT). Out in Cheney, Washington, Sandy Cohen hit a jumper with 33 seconds left, got the rebound on a missed free throw by Eastern, and hit a bucket with 8 seconds left to force overtime. Jayquan McCloud has 6 points in the OT as Green Bay (2-2) went on for the win. McCloud and Tank Hemphill each finished with 19 for the Phoenix, and Cody Schwartz added 18. Cohen had 9 points and 13 rebounds. Eastern Washington is 0-3. Titan Non Conference Opponents: Temple 81, Loyola (Md.) 67. The final score doesn't look too lopsided, but Temple (4-0) was never in trouble in this one. Shizz Alston had 18 for the winners. Brent Holcomb, a 6-8 forward, had 17 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks for Loyola (1-3), which is next up on the Titans' docket.
Akron 87, Chicago State 46. Tracy Dildy's old squad gave Illinois State a battle earlier this week, but Akron (3-0) was all over the Cougars (0-5), leading by 26 at halftime. Fourteen players scored for Akron, which cleared the bench early.
Dayton 91, Fort Wayne 80. Dayton came back from a halftime deficit on their home floor to beat IPFW, er... Fort Wayne ... er ... Purdue Fort Wayne. Talk about a woeful branding effort. Josh Cunningham led the Flyers (3-0) with 20 points on 9 of 10 shooting from the floor.
Liberty 77, Kent State 70. At Kent, Ohio, Liberty (3-0) ended the first half with an 11-2 run for a 31-23 lead, and never trailed after the break. Liberty fueled its win with 9 of 19 shooting from the arc, and 52% overall. The refs tried to help out the home team -- Kent (2-1) took 37 foul shots to 13 for Liberty, even though Kent was intentionally fouling in the final minutes in an effort to catch the Flames.
South Florida 73, Ohio U. 46. OU was just doing it's thing, leading 12-7, when about midway through the first half USF went on a 23-1 blitz, and that was that. OU ended up making just 2 of 25 three point attempts.
Ole Butler 83, Ole Miss 76. Butler (3-0) stayed unbeaten behind 27 points by Paul Jorgensen. Is Mississippi's insistance on being called "Ole Miss" the stupidest branding in college sports? There's lots of less competent efforts (a local Sisters of Mercy institution comes to mind), but for sheer stupidity, you'd be hard to beat "Ole Miss." Unless you put an accent over the "e."
Other Games of Interest: Weber State 78, Central Michigan 76. Israel Barnes's three pointer swished through as the horn sounded, knocking CMU from the unbeaten ranks.
#2 Kansas 89, Louisiana 76. Lagerald Vick had 33 points for Kansas (3-0). #4 Virginia 97, Coppin State 40. Virginia's defense is just ridiculous. #6 Nevada 87, Little Rock 59. #7 North Carolina 108, Tennessee Tech 58. #12 Kansas State 95, Eastern Kentucky 68. #13 Oregon 80, #15 Syracuse 65. Bol Bol had 26 26. "Get the papers, get the papers." #16 Virginia Tech 88, Northeastern 60. #17 Mississippi State 79, Long Beach State 51. #20 UCLA 95, St. Francis (Pa.) 58. #22 LSU 74, Louisiana Tech 67. LSU (4-0) didn't take the lead for good until 2:21 was left in the game. #23 Purdue 79, Davidson 58. Carsen Edwards had 29 points as Purdue (4-0) showed Davidson (3-1) what's what.
St. John's 84, Rutgers 65. The Johnnies salvaged a win for the Big East in the Gavitt Games. In fact, the Big 10 only won this year's challenge 5-3. But the Big East's wins came at the bottom of the pile (this game, DePaul over Penn State), while the Big 10 made mincemeat out of the Easterners among the teams with serious post-season hopes.
Iowa 91, Connecticut 72. Iowa (4-0) followed yesterday's upset of #13 Oregon with a resounding win over UConn (3-1). Look for the Hawkeyes to enter the national rankings on Monday. Valparaiso 64, Monmouth 53. Seems like only yesterday Monmouth was the darling of the mid-major world. They're 0-5 so far this year. Penn 78, Northern Iowa 71. Penn is 4-0.
Mid-Major Wins of the Day Howard 68, Massachusetts 63. Howard is off to a 4-0 start after today's upset win at Massachusetts (2-2). The Bison have had just one winning season (2002) in the last 26 years, with an average of just 8 wins per year. Think about that--we've had two straight 8 win seasons and can't believe the program has fallen so far; Howard has averaged just 8 wins a year over a 26 year period.
Loyola Marymount 65, Georgetown 52. James Bateman has 27 points and 8 rebounds for Loyola (4-0). Western Kentucky 63, West Virginia 57. Super frosh Charles Bassey had 13 points and 15 boards for the Hilltoppers (3-1).
Games at Stanford, San Francisco, and Sacramento State were cancelled today due to smoke.

In Oakland’s loss to UNLV, Hill Maas only played 22 minutes. He got hit in the face and had a bloody nose that forced him in and out of the game several times. Impressive offensive performance especially given the fact that he only played about half the game.

Impressive offensive performance especially given the fact that he only played about half the game. That's impressive. I think about him playing the Titans and I reflect on what Murtaugh said to Riggs before they fought Jet Li in Lethal Weapon 4: "That SOB is gonna be a handful."

Saturday, November 17
Horizon The Horizon continued to dig out of the hole it created in week one, with HL teams winning 4 of 5 today, all over D-I teams.
Green Bay 87, Morehead State 70. Green Bay (3-2) completed a nice weekend out in Cheney, Washington, with a convincing win over Morehead State (2-3) in the "2K Empire Classic Subregional." The Phoenix mad 13 of 25 shots from behind the arc. Jaquan McCloud led the way with 23 points, including 5 three-pointers.
Wright State 89, North Florida 72. Six Raiders scored in double figures, led by Loudon Love with 20. Wright State (3-1) made 11 of 18 three pointers in an easy win.
Fordham 67, Youngstown State 61. Youngstown didn't have quite enough juice in Gotham. Fordham's Nick Honor clinched it by hitting 4 free throws in the final 18 seconds. Before that, it had been a tough game for Honor, who was 1-10 from three. Devin Morgan led YSU (2-3) with 25 points.
Northern Kentucky 59, Manhattan 53. Northern Kentucky is 5-0, and they'd better be, given that they're playing a bunch of patsies at home. Manhattan (1-3) closed a 17 point second half deficit to 5 with about three minutes left, but could get no closer. NKU made 10 of 19 threes, and got 19 points from Drew McDonald and 15 from Dantez Walton.
UIC 71, Bradley 70. Under Coach Steve McLain, UIC has developed a reputation for blowing leads, and they nearly did it again tonight. Bradley came back from a 15 point second half deficit to tie it with under 5 minutes left, and it looked like the same old story for the Flames. UIC responded with 6 straight points, but still did its best to throw this one. UIC was held without a field goal for the final 3:22, and missed 6 free throws in the final 2:06, but held on when Bradley's shot at the final buzzer was off the mark. In the end, it's a good win over a team generally projected to finish in the upper half of the MVC. Tarkus Ferguson led UIC's effort with 22 points and 10 assists.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: Eastern Michigan 80, Boston U. 62. Elijah Minnie scored 28 for EMU (4-1). Western Michigan 99, Aquinas 52. Western padded its win total against NAIA Aquinas. Mike Flower led the Broncos with 19 points.
Other Games of Interest #18 Michigan 84, George Washington 61. This game was not as close as the 23 point final differential looks. UM led by as much as 37 midway through the second half before calling off the dogs. A very impressive week for the Wolverines (4-0), who are playing as well as any team in the country. Charles Matthews led today with 25 points.
#24 Marquette 74, Presbyterian 55. Presbyterian (3-2) led 43-37 with 12 minutes left, but ran out of gas.
Drexel 89, La Salle 84. Drexel (2-2) beats it more hoops illustrious neighbor. Looks like a long year looming for La Salle (0-4). Duquesne 69, Radford 64. Eric Williams isn't so much the one that got away as the one we didn't bother to fish for. Today the sophomore had his thirteenth career double-double as Duquesne (3-0) beat Radford (3-1).
Pitt 71, North Alabama 66. North Alabama (1-3) is in its first year in D-I, and was playing a P6 opponent for the first time in its history. The Lions led at halftime, were tied with less than 11 minutes to play, were within 1 point twice in the final four minutes, and were within 1 possession, with the ball, in the final 20 seconds. But close only counts in horse shoes. Pitt is off to a 5-0 start.
Memphis 109, Yale 102 (2 OT). Yale showed how not to close out an upset win. The Eli led by 6 with 90 seconds to play, but Memphis forced the OT when Yale fouled Tyler Harris on a three point attempt with 2 seconds left, and Harris made all three foul shots. The scene played out again in the OT, when Yale, up two, fouled Memphis's Jeremiah Martin on a 3 point attempt with 8 seconds left. Martin missed the last two shots, but Memphis's Kyvon Davenport got the rebound, and Yale fouled him on the shot with 2 seconds left. Davenport missed the first, but hit the second to force a second OT, and Memphis won that going away. Memphis shot 56 free throws.
Mid-Major Win of the Day: Furman 76, #8 Villanova 68 (OT). With two seconds left in regulation, Furman's Matt Rafferty missed the front end of a 1 & 1 that would have won it. But Rafferty came back in the overtime with 3 rebounds, a block, and a turnaround jumper to put the game out of reach in the final minute. Rafferty finished with 15 points and 17 rebounds, and all five Furman starters scored between 13 and 17 points in the win. This is shaping up as the biggest season for Furman basketball since they were a national power behind 1954 National Player of the Year Frank Selvy, and 1956 All-American Darrell Floyd. After winning 23 games each of the last two years, they're 5-0 for the first time in 30 years; they've already beaten two of last year's final four participants on the road (having beaten Loyola a week ago), and last Thursday junior Jeff Lyons scored 54 points and made an NCAA record 15 three-pointers in a win against UNC-Greenville. The 54 points were the most for a Furman player in one game since Floyd scored 62 in 1956. The Paladins got a lone vote in last week's AP poll and will look to add more this week. They were last ranked in December of 1972, in the UPI poll.

A shame that the HL has to start out so slow, but it’s made a comeback with a few very solid days. I think the conference is overall better than last year. I’m especially impressed with UIC, IUPUI, and NKU.

Sunday, November 18
Horizon: Northern Kentucky 89, Coastal Carolina 83. NKU wins its own invitational and advances to 6-0 with a hard fought win over Coastal Carolina (3-3). Drew McDonald had 31 points and 12 rebounds for the Norse, who hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute to ice the win.
Samford 73, Cleveland State 60. Samford rushed out to a 28-14 lead in the first 11 minutes, but a CSU rally cut the margin to 1 at halftime. But CSU threw its hard work away, allowing Samford to start the second half with a 14-2 blitz to reassert control. This time there was no comeback in the Vikings (2-3), who just couldn't shoot tonight--30% on the evening. A bad home loss for the Vikings, who have been disappointing so far. Samford is 5-0, but against a very weak schedule.
Florida International 102, Youngstown State 93. YSU loses two out of three at the Fordham tournament in New York. The Penguins led all three games at the half. YSU wasted a 27 point effort from Donel Cathcart. The Penguins (2-4) have had 5 different scoring leaders in the last 5 games. Brian Beard had 36 for FIU (5-1), which also counts Milwaukee among its victims this year.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: Loyola Marymount 65, Ohio U. 56. In its last two games, both losses, Ohio (2-2) has shot 29.1% and 33.9% from the floor. Kent State 79, Alcorn State 48. CJ Williamson and Antonio Williams each had 17 as Kent State (3-1) romped.
Other Games of Interest, at least to Me: #18 Michigan 66, Providence 47. UM just keeps rolling. This one the Wolverines led by 13 at the half and by as much as 24 in the second half. UM hasn't trailed in their last 138 minutes of ball against Holy Cross, Villanova, George Washington, and now Providence. In their 5-0 start, their average margin of victory is 22 points. Providence is 3-2. They've just beaten 2 Big East and an A10 team in road games or on neutral floors, by an average of 23 points. The Wolverines need the Final Four to start now, because they are playing as good or better than anyone else in the country.
#11 Michigan State 101, Tennessee Tech 33. This game was just ridiculous. Just counting State's 3 point attempts, they outscored Tennessee Tech 42-33. Central Michigan 76, San Jose State 74. Shawn Roundtree gave CMU the lead with two free throws with 18 seconds left, and after San Jose tied it, Roundtree hit a jumper for the win with 4 seconds left. Central is 4-1.
#10 Kentucky 92, VMI 82. The Keydets (3-2) made 12 three pointers in the second half, cutting a 19 point deficit to 6 with under 2 minutes to play, but the Wildcats (3-1) held on. #12 Kansas State 64, Penn 48. Penn falls from the unbeaten ranks. #16 Virginia Tech 89, #23 Purdue 83. In Charleston, Purdue (4-1) led by 12 early in the second half, but couldn't hold it.
Georgetown 76, South Florida 73 (OT). The Hoyas (4-1) rallied from a double-digit deficit to win in OT. Wake Forest 69, Valparaiso 63. Holy Cross 57, Siena 45. West Virginia 97, St. Joseph's 90. Alabama 90, Wichita State 86. Alabama is 4-1, the Shockers are 2-3. Arkansas 73, Indiana 72. Evansville 85, Texas Southern 63. Coach Davis's old squad has dropped 4 straight since opening with an upset of Butler. Our old friends at Evansville are 3-2.
