Monday, November 19:
Horizon: A perfect night for the Horizon, and the Titans.
Detroit 91, Loyola (Md.) 63. Antoine Davis missed 4 three pointers, but still contributed with 5 assists, and the Titans rallied behind Darrien King's 17 points to get the win.
Oakland 91, Defiance 47. Xavier Hill-Maas had another 30 point night as Oakland (1-3) got its first win of the year, against tiny Defiance. Hill-Maas was 12-12 from the floor tonight, and is averaging 26.5 points per game.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: Bowling Green 81, Hampton 79. After trailing most of the game, BG won it on a Demajeo Wiggins tip-back at the buzzer. Wiggins finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Detroiter Justin Turner led Bowling Green with 21 points.
Rutgers 63, Eastern Michigan 36. The score at halftime was 31-4. I repeat, 31-4. Eastern (4-2) shot 2-25 for the half.
Cincinnati 78, Western Michigan 52. Mike Flowers had 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, but Western (3-2) was no match for UC (3-1).
VCU 57, Temple 51. In a battle of Eastern unbeatens that may have ramifications come March, VCU (4-0) outscored Temple 19-2 to open the game, and 13-3 to finish it. In between, Temple (4-1) dominated, but the entire game counts.
#8 Auburn 88, Xavier 79. Xavier scored the final 5 points in regulation to force the OT, but Auburn ran away in the extra period behind 10 points from Jerod Harper and Bryce Brown. Ryan Welage led Xavier (2-2) with 17 for the game.
#16 Clemson 72, Akron 69. Akron cut a 15 point deficit with under 10 to play down to just 4, but the final wasn't quite as close as the score indicates, as the Zips scored 7 meaningless points in the final 18 seconds, the last a three at the buzzer. Still, a game performance by the Zips (3-1), who got 25 points from Loren Jackson.
Toledo 90, Florida Gulf Coast 62. Jaelen Sanford had 19 as Toledo (3-1) rolled. St. John's 82, California 79. Shamorie Ponds had 32 points for the Johnnies (4-0). Justice Suing had 19 for Cal (1-2). Doesn't look like that game is going to be rescheduled.
Other Games: #1 Duke 90, San Diego State 64. #3 Gonzaga 84, Illinois 78. Gonzaga held off a series of Illinois charges in an interesting game in Maui. The Illini's Trent Frasier led all scorers with 29. #6 Nevada 90, Cal-Baptist 55. #7 North Carolina 101, St. Francis (Pa.) 76. #12 Kansas State 82, Missouri 67. #14 Florida State 93, Canisius 61. Arizona State 72, #15 Mississippi State 67. ASU closed out the first half with a 23-7 run for a 15 point halftime lead. That left the second half as a long, slow battle in catch-up, with Mississippi State finally did with 1:02 left to play. But Arizona State answered with a three, and after a next-possession miss, Mississippi State (3-1) was left to foul. ASU (4-0) went 4-4 from the line to ice it.
#18 UCLA 80 Presbyterian 65. Presbyterian (3-3) chopped a 22 point halftime deficit to three before tiring. Erstwhile Titan Cory Hightower had 4 points and 7 rebounds as a starter for Presbyterian, while another freshman, Adam Flagler, had 29 for the Blue Hose.
Georgia State 75, St. Bonaventure 65. Assistant Coach Ray McCallum's team is 3-1. Arizona 71, Iowa State 66.
Mid Major Win of the Day: Utah State 80, St. Mary's 63. Not exactly an upset of a high-major, but there don't seem to be any of those today, pending the late results, at least. A nice win for Utah State (5-0) against another top mid-major.

Sunday, November 18Horizon:Northern Kentucky 89, Coastal Carolina 83. NKU wins its own invitational and advances to 6-0 with a hard fought win over Coastal Carolina (3-3). Drew McDonald had 31 points and 12 rebounds for the Norse, who hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute to ice the win. Samford 73, Cleveland State 60. Samford rushed out to a 28-14 lead in the first 11 minutes, but a CSU rally cut the margin to 1 at halftime. But CSU threw its hard work away, allowing Samford to start the second half with a 14-2 blitz to reassert control. This time there was no comeback in the Vikings (2-3), who just couldn't shoot tonight--30% on the evening. A bad home loss for the Vikings, who have been disappointing so far. Samford is 5-0, but against a very weak schedule. Florida International 102, Youngstown State 93. YSU loses two out of three at the Fordham tournament in New York. The Penguins led all three games at the half. YSU wasted a 27 point effort from Donel Cathcart. The Penguins (2-4) have had 5 different scoring leaders in the last 5 games. Brian Beard had 36 for FIU (5-1), which also counts Milwaukee among its victims this year. Titan Non-Conference Opponents:Loyola Marymount 65, Ohio U. 56. In its last two games, both losses, Ohio (2-2) has shot 29.1% and 33.9% from the floor. Kent State 79, Alcorn State 48. CJ Williamson and Antonio Williams each had 17 as Kent State (3-1) romped. Other Games of Interest, at least to Me:#18 Michigan 66, Providence 47. UM just keeps rolling. This one the Wolverines led by 13 at the half and by as much as 24 in the second half. UM hasn't trailed in their last 138 minutes of ball against Holy Cross, Villanova, George Washington, and now Providence. In their 5-0 start, their average margin of victory is 22 points. Providence is 3-2. They've just beaten 2 Big East and an A10 team in road games or on neutral floors, by an average of 23 points. The Wolverines need the Final Four to start now, because they are playing as good or better than anyone else in the country. #11 Michigan State 101, Tennessee Tech 33. This game was just ridiculous. Just counting State's 3 point attempts, they outscored Tennessee Tech 42-33. Central Michigan 76, San Jose State 74. Shawn Roundtree gave CMU the lead with two free throws with 18 seconds left, and after San Jose tied it, Roundtree hit a jumper for the win with 4 seconds left. Central is 4-1. #10 Kentucky 92, VMI 82. The Keydets (3-2) made 12 three pointers in the second half, cutting a 19 point deficit to 6 with under 2 minutes to play, but the Wildcats (3-1) held on. #12 Kansas State 64, Penn 48. Penn falls from the unbeaten ranks. #16 Virginia Tech 89, #23 Purdue 83. In Charleston, Purdue (4-1) led by 12 early in the second half, but couldn't hold it. Georgetown 76, South Florida 73 (OT). The Hoyas (4-1) rallied from a double-digit deficit to win in OT. Wake Forest 69, Valparaiso 63. Holy Cross 57, Siena 45. West Virginia 97, St. Joseph's 90. Alabama 90, Wichita State 86. Alabama is 4-1, the Shockers are 2-3. Arkansas 73, Indiana 72. Evansville 85, Texas Southern 63. Coach Davis's old squad has dropped 4 straight since opening with an upset of Butler. Our old friends at Evansville are 3-2. Back to the Michigan State win: When was the last time a D1 men's team tripled the score on another D1 men's team? That is incredible.

Another example of why I don't bet on sporting events:That Rutgers versus EMU game. I thought Eastern had a decent chance of pulling off the upset.

Tuesday, November 20
Horizon Detroit 82, Bowling Green 67. For the second night in a row, Antoine Davis missed 4 three pointers, but Detroit was able to survive behind Josh McFolley's 18 and Derrien King's 14. Boe Nguidjol scored his first D1 points. McFolley passed Jason Calliste, Lou Hyatt, and Desmond Ferguson, and tied Bruce Rodwan for 29th on the Titans' all-time scoring list.
Milwaukee 92, Long Island 87 (OT). Milwaukee, after trailing since early in the first half, forced an OT on a Carsen Warren-Newsome bucket with 13 seconds left. Warren-Newsome then hit a key bucket to put the Panthers up 3 with 27 seconds left in the OT, and Darius Roy and Jake Wright each made 2 free throws in the final 5 seconds to preserve the win. Roy finished with 27 points and Warren-Newsome with 21 as Milwaukee got its first win against 4 defeats.
Penn State 77, Wright State 59. I was disappointed that Wright State--the consensus pick to win the Horizon--didn't give Penn State much of a fight down in Cancun. The Nittany Lions (3-1) never trailed, led by 17 at the break, and never let WSU (3-2) get closer than 13 in the second half. Billy Wampler had 17 points and Loudon Love 14 points and 10 rebounds for Wright State, but the Raiders were unable to stop Penn State at the other end.
#21 Oregon 83, Green Bay 72. Green Bay, OTOH, gave a pretty fair accounting at Oregon--a true road game against a much better opponent than Penn State. The Phoenix trailed for all but a few seconds early in the game, and never seemed to truly threaten the Ducks, but they wouldn't go away, either. Each time Oregon would open up a 12 or 13 point lead and seemed poised to break away, Green Bay would trim the lead back to 8 points or so, hanging around, making Oregon work. The Phoenix's final effort cut the margin to 4 with two minutes to go, but they misfired on two attempts to get closer and Oregon hit free throws. Green Bay turned it over just 5 times, but Oregon won it at the foul line, where they made 33 of 42 to Green Bays' 9 for 18. Big Bol Bol had 21 points and 9 rebounds for Oregon, while Sandy Cohen had 18 for Green Bay.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Loyola (Md.) 75, Hampton 66. Andrew Kostecka, who hit for 23 against us, had 18 points in the Greyhounds' win.
Temple 76, California 59. Still wish we'd been able to play Cal. Quentin Rose had 23 points and Shizz Alston 10 assists as Temple (5-1) bounced back from last night's loss to VCU.
San Diego State 79, Xavier 74. Xavier actually led by 19 points in the early going, but the Aztecs (3-1) got the gap back to single digits and then went on a 17-2 run in the second half to turn it around. It's not embarrassing to lose to Wisconsin, Auburn, and San Diego State, but it's obvious nonetheless that this is a sub-par Xavier squad. Ferris State transfer Zach Hankins had 15 for the Musketeers (2-3).
Toledo 77, Louisiana 64. Louisiana is the former Southwestern Louisiana, for you other old-timers. Nate Navigato and Jaelen Sanford each had 17 points, and Willie Jackson had 13 points and 16 rebounds for the Rockets (4-1).
Illinois State 73, Akron 68. Akron (3-2) had just 4 turnovers, but was doomed by 32% shooting. Illinois State (3-2) was a preseason favorite in the MVC.
Kent State 104, Savannah State 84. Kent had 63 points at halftime and led by as many as 43 in the second half.
Other Games: #1 Duke 78, #8 Auburn 72. After falling behind by 14 in the early going, Auburn (4-1) kept clawing back at Duke, only to be met by a Duke run whenever it got too close. Duke is really good. This game sold me on Auburn, too.
#3 Gonzaga 91, Arizona 74. It looked grim for Gonzaga as Arizona extended an eight point halftime lead to 13 early in the second period. But the rest of the way it was Zags 54, Zona 24. Rui Hachimura had 24 for Gonzaga (5-0), while Justin Coleman led Arizona (4-1) with 28. The Bulldog comeback sets up a Duke/Gonzaga Maui Invitational final on Wednesday. #16 Clemson 64, Georgia 49. #23 Ohio State 68, Samford 50. Samford, which entered the game 5-0, was up 3 at the half and hit a three to start the second half. Then the Buckeyes finally got down to business with a 21-3 run, and cruised home from there. Freshman Detroiter Duane Washington is starting for the Buckeyes.
Notre Dame 67, Duquesne 56. A back and forth game, with Notre Dame (4-1) closing out on a 16-4 run. Duquesne takes its first lost against three wins.
St. John's 87, VCU 86 (OT). St. John's wins the GoPrint.com Legends Classic (that's the tournament whose "sub-regional" we just hosted, and included our game with Temple and cancellation with Cal). I'm sure the trophy will hold a place of honor in their gym. But beyond that, this is the type of game that matter a lot to these two schools come selection Sunday. Shamori Ponds (35 points, 7 assists, 7 steals for St. John's) and Isaac Vann (30 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists for VCU) vied for individual honors. In the last minute of OT, Ponds hit two free throws to give St. John's a one point lead; Vann hit two to put VCU back on top; Ponds hit two more for a St. John's lead; Vann hit two to put VCU up 1 with 10 seconds left; and then Ponds hit a game winning basket with 4 seconds left. Advantage Ponds.
North Texas 74, Maine 63 (OT). North Texas (7-0) has the longest winning streak in the country, at 9 games. Cal-Irvine 67, Tulane 55. Irvine is 6-0.
Mid-Major Win of the Day Lipscomb 73, #18 TCU 64. After trailing at halftime, Lipscomb (4-1) built a 12 point second half lead, then held off a rally that three time brought TCU to within a point. This was Lipscomb's first win ever over a ranked team (they've been D-I for 16 years). Fittingly, senior Garrison Mathews, who already has over 1800 career points, led the Bison with 23 points. And some good trivia on Lipscomb: The career record for points scored at any level is held by John Pierce, who played for Lipscomb from 1990-94; the career record for assists at any level is held by Jerry Myer, who played for Lipscomb from 1989-92; the career record for steals at any level is held by Marcus Bodie (Lipscomb, 1986-1990), and the career record for three pointers at any level is held by Andy McQueen, Lipscomb (1991-95). Oh, and the #2 career scorer at any level, Philip Hutchinson? Lipscomb. Lipscomb played at the NAIA level during those years.

Wednesday, November 21
Horizon Southern Methodist 77, Wright State 76. The Horizon has had a problem all year with coughing up late leads. This time it was the Raiders (3-3), who led or were tied for over 35 minutes of clock time, but lost when SMU's Jimmy Whitt hit jumpers with 25 seconds and 4 seconds left in the game. Loudon Love had 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Youngstown State 104, Westminster 66. But Youngstown (3-4) blasted Westminster, so the Horizon has that. 15 Penguins scored tonight, and you can read that however you wish.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Dayton 69,Butler 64. Dayton (4-0) stays unbeaten, and Butler (3-1) doesn't. Dayton led by 15 with just over 4 minutes to go, and Butler's rally ran out of time. Dayton's Jalen Crutcher led all scorers with 20 points.
Xavier , Illinois . Seven players scored between 8 and 14 points as Xavier evened its record at 3-3.
Toledo 67, Cal-Irvine 60. Jaelen Sanford had 18 points as Toledo (5-1) dropped Irvine (6-1) from the unbeaten ranks.
Akron 61, St. Bonaventure 49. Danny Utomi hit 6 of 9 threes, finishing with 22 points and 9 rebounds for Akron (4-2). St. Bonaventure (1-5) is really struggling after last year's NCAA appearance.
Other Games of interest: #3 Gonzaga 89, Duke 87. A March preview? Duke never led after the opening minute, but came from 16 down to tie it at 87 with with 1:45 to play. Rui Hachimura restored Gonzaga's lead on the next possession, and then came a wild final 90 seconds. Duke missed 7 shots from the field--super freshman RJ Barrett missed 5 of them--and Gonzaga went 0-4 from the foul line. Good enough. Zags likely take over #1 spot in the polls next week. Despite his late futility, Barrett led all scorers with 23, while Hachimura had 20 for the Zags.
#2 Kansas 77, Marquette 68. Trailing 47-38 at halftime, the Jayhawks held Marquette scoreless for over 9 minutes to open the second half, taking a 60-47 lead before Sam Houser finally connected with 10:45 to play. Take out those 9 minutes, and Marquette (3-2) did just fine. Dedric Lawson led the winners (4-0) with 26 points and 12 rebounds.
#4 Virginia 74, Middle Tennessee State 52. Virginia (4-0) has given up an average of under 48 points per game to its 4 D-I foes. #5 Tennessee 92, Louisville 81. #10 Kentucky 87, Winthrop 74. #15 Mississippi State 61, St. Mary's 57. Tough, close game. Creighton 87, #16 Clemson 82. Clemson exits the unbeaten ranks. #20 Iowa 105, Alabama State 78. #22 Buffalo 110, Dartmouth 71. Buffalo offered Bobby Hurley a huge sum in an unsuccessful effort to keep him as coach a few years ago. But they've done just fine under Hurley's successor, Nate Oaks. Milan's Nick Perkins had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Buffalo tonight.
#25 Wisconsin 62, Stanford 46.
Minnesota 68, Washington 66. In Vancouver, Gabe Kalschuer made a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left to keep the Gophers (5-0) unbeaten.
Boston College 78, Loyola 66. Pittsburgh 75, St. Louis 73. Both teams entered the game at 4-0. Once St. Louis scored the first basket of the second half, these two were never separated by more than 4 points.
Mid Major Win of the Night Georgia State 91, Georgia 67. Corey Allen's new team pummeled its big brother. Ga State (4-2) led 51-32 at halftime and quickly extended the lead to 32 after the break. Senior Malik Benlevi led the Panthers with a career high 24 points, all on three-pointers. Georgia is 3-3.

Big win for Creighton, as they are expected to struggle in the Big East this year.
Huge win for Georgia State. Coach Hunter is 15-6 against Georgia schools since becoming the head coach at GSU.

Happy Thanksgiving:
Horizon: No league games today. After a 3-19 start against D1 teams, the Horizon is up to 18-28, good for a #17 conference ranking from Sagarin, and #18 using the old RPI formula. We're ahead of the Summit and behind the MAC. Not the old days, but a lot better than last year's low 20s rankings.
Non-Conference Titan Opponents: #4 Virginia 66, Dayton 59. Virginia's defense is so good, I'm convinced that opposing team's fans start leaving once the Cavaliers take a 3 or 4 point lead. "We'll never catch up." But Dayton (4-1) looked good tonight in defeat and will be a handful for the Titans in less than two weeks.
Butler 84, Middle Tennessee State 53. Butler (4-1) bounces back from it's loss to Dayton.
Other Games that might be of interest: #11 Michigan State 87, #17 UCLA 67. Wouldn't it be ironic if this year MSU made the Final Four? The Spartans looked like a Final Four team tonight, leading by 25 at the half and toying with the Bruins in the second.
#6 Nevada 96, Tulsa 86. When I was a kid, it seemed like there was always some non-major power (we didn't call them mid-majors back then) crashing the top 5: Davidson, or Jacksonville, or New Mexico State, etc. Pretty rare nowadays. Go Nevada (5-0)!
Texas 92, #7 North Carolina 89. A very interesting game to watch. Freshman Coby White had 33 for Carolina (5-1), but Kerwin Roach countered with 32 for the Longhorns (5-0).
#14 Florida State 81, UAB 63. A schedule of Mercer, New Orleans, and West Alabama didn't prepare UAB (3-1) for top 25 competition. #19 LSU 67, Charleston 55. #25 Wisconsin 78, Oklahoma 58. D'mitrik Trice hit 7 consecutive threes and finished with 25 points. Ethan Happ added 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Badgers (5-0).
Villanova 83, Canisius 56.
Mid Major Win of the Day: Fresno State 78, Northwestern 59.

Friday, November 23
Horizon The Horizon had another good night, with only CSU's predictable loss at Ohio State marring the evening.
Oakland 77, James Madison 69. Oakland's been waiting for for years for 6-11 Brad Brechting to have a big game, and he finally did today, with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists, all career highs. Xavier Hill-Maas continued his strong play with 16 points, and freshman point guard Braden Norris stepped up with 12 points and 5 assists on a perfect shooting night (3-3 from the field, 4-4 from the line). Norris was starting because for the second straight game, Oakland (2-2) was without it's regular point guard, Brailen Neely, who is apparently being punished for what Kampe has called "issues." James Madison was led by Stuckey Moseley, a Toledo transfer, with 25 points. The Dukes are now 4-2, though two of the wins are over non-D1 teams.
#23 Ohio State 89, Cleveland State 62. CSU kept it reasonably close for a half, but a 10-1 Buckeye run to start to the second half pretty much finished the Vikings off. Stefan Kenic had 13 points for the Vikings (2-4).
IUPUI 68, St. Francis (NY) 48. Camron Justice led IUPUI (3-2) with 17.
Milwaukee 79, Albany 70. With 5 minutes to play, Milwaukee broke open a tie game with a 90 second, 10-0 run. Grad transfer Jacob Wright had his first big game as a Panther, making 7 of 9 three pointers and finishing with 23 points. DeAndre Abram added 13 points and 12 rebounds, including 5 points in the crucial, game-breaking run. The win was Milwaukee's 2nd in a row after opening the season with 4 losses. Albany is 2-4.
Non-Conference Titan Opponents Western Michigan 85, Southern 70. Seth Dugan had 28 points and 10 rebounds for the Broncos (4-2). Southern is 0-5.
Butler 61, Florida 54. If it helps you feel better about the Titans, the three teams that have beaten us have a combined record of 14-4. Butler is 5-1 after tonight's hard-fought win, led by Kamar Baldwin, with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Oklahoma 65, Dayton 54. Oklahoma (5-1) held Dayton's leading scorer, Josh Cunningham, to 5 points, and pulled away in the final 5 minutes.
Kent State 77, Vanderbilt 75. Kent State (5-1) never trailed this game after the first 40 seconds. They built the lead to as many as 13, and though Vanderbilt (4-1) came back three time to tie it, each time the Flashes answered. The Commissioner loves teams that make their free throws, and Kent iced the win by making 9 of 10 in the final 40 seconds. Inkster's Jalen Walker led Kent State with 22 points.
Some Other Games not featuring Jermaine Jackson, Jr. #9 Michigan 83, Chattanooga 55. UM (6-0) dominant against outmanned Chattanooga (2-5).
#11 Michigan State 78, Texas 68. Texas (5-1) was pretty awesome for the first 15 minutes, opening up a 19 point lead at one point, but MSU (5-1) finally went to work, and just had more talent. The Spartans didn't play their best, winning despite 24 turnovers. But they shot well (including 60% from three) and, after the opening minutes, played very tough defense. Joshua Langford led the effort with 29 points, including 5 of 6 threes.
#2 Kansas 87, #5 Tennessee 81 (OT). I think a lot of people had doubts about whether Tennessee merited its lofty ranking. The Vols erased those doubts despite losing. For Kansas, Dedric Lawson had 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists, including 8 points in the OT.
#4 Virginia 53, #25 Wisconsin 46. The slow meet the slower. Ethan Happ had 22 points and 15 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for Wisconsin (5-1). #6 Nevada 110, Massachusetts 87. #7 North Carolina 94, #17 UCLA 78. UCLA led by 11 early and 5 at the half, but Carolina beat 'em 34-16 over the final 13 minutes. #10 Kentucky 77, Tennessee State 62. #14 Florida State 79, #19 LSU 76. A tense, close game, start to finish. The Seminoles (5-0) forced OT on a bucket by Trent Forrest with 2 seconds left, then won it on a three pointer by Mfiondu Kabengele with 2 seconds left in the extra period. LSU drops to 5-1. #24 Purdue 84, Robert Morris 46. Nobody talks about Horizon expansion any more--almost certainly because the league is not half the attractive suitor it was 5 years ago. But Bob Morris, a school often discussed as an expansion target, isn't as pretty a catch as it was 5 years ago either, after 3 consecutive losing seasons, so who knows.
Marquette 77, Louisville 74 (OT). Markus Howard had 18 points in the second half and OT as Marquette rallied from a halftime deficit. Indiana 76, UC-Davis 62. UC Davis, just 1-6, led at the half, and the Hoosiers (5-1) didn't take the lead for good until under 6 minutes were left. Villanova 77, Oklahoma State 58. Memphis 71, Canisius 63. Tubby Smith's 21-win season and NCAA championship resume wasn't enough for Memphis fans, so they brought in Anfernee Hardaway. So far, the results are so-so: the Tigers lost (badly) to Oklahoma State, and also to LSU; their wins over Tennessee Tech, Yale, and Canisius have been less than impressive.
Arkansas Pine Bluff 115, Cal Baptist 107 (3 OT). A triple overtime game seems worth a mention. Pine Bluff's Martaveous McKnight, the nation's #3 scorer, had 40 points.
Mid-Major Win of the Day Houston Baptist 93, Wake Forest 91. Actually, Kent State's win over Vanderbilt is better, but I already mentioned it up with Titan non-conference opponents. In this one, Baptist (2-2) trailed by 14 with 8:58 to play, but held Wake without another field goal in regulation and tied it on Ian Dubose's three pointer at the buzzer.

Saturday, November 24
Horizon Another good night for the HL, which won 4 of 5 (including one non-D1 game). The NCAA's decision to drop the RPI formula is actually hurting the Horizon so far--using the old RPI formula, the HL is 13th of 32 conferences.
Detroit 78, Eastern Michigan 74. So we proved we can beat a team with a winning record; we can win on the road; we can win without 30 points from Antoine; we can win while being outrebounded by more than two-to-one. I like just 7 turnovers; I like 19 assists (7 from AD, 6 from Josh). And Cole Long picked the moment for a big game. I think he's today's MVP. Oh, the Titans are #110 in the now meaningless RPI.
Oakland 87, Oral Roberts 76. Jaevin Cumberland had 31 points for OU (3-3). I've never thought much of Cumberland but it looks like, after two non-descript years, he's become a player. Xavier Hill-Maas added 28. Oral Roberts is 2-6.
Central Florida 66, Northern Kentucky 53. After a 6-0 start (5 games at home) against weak competition, NKU finally took on a challenge, traveling down to Orlando to take on Central Florida. It went well enough for a half, but the second period was all UCF (5-1). A late Norse rally made the final score look a little better than it was. Drew McDonald scored 22 points but the rest of NKU's squad shot 26%.
IUPUI 80, Grambling 69. Camron Justice had 23 points and Akhil Ismael had 16 points and 10 rebounds as IUPUI both its games at Fort Myers Tip-off "regional" in Buffalo. Life's a bitch--you sign up for a tournament called the Fort Myers tip-off and discover you're spending Thanksgiving weekend on Lake Ontario. But IUPUI is now 4-2.
UIC 94, Wisconsin Parkside 74. UIC (3-3) won its third in a row, beating up D-II Parkside. Well, actually, the game was still tied with 10 minutes left. But UIC beat them up 32-12 over the final ten minutes. Marcus Ottey had 20 points.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents: Nicholls State 62, Western Michigan 61 (OT). Gavin Peppers scored 22 points--all in the second half and the OT--for Nicholls State (4-4), including the final 4 points of the extra period. Peppers is on his 5th--fifth--school: a year at Olympic Junior College, a year at Laramie Community College, a year at Cleveland State (in which he was an injury redshirt), a year at Central Michigan, and now, as a grad transfer, Nicholls State. Seth Dugan had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Western (4-3).
Ohio U. 85, Austin Peay 82 (OT). Austin Peay (2-4) came back from a 14 point halftime deficit, but OU prevailed in the end. Jason Carter and Teyvian Kirk combined for 49 points and 20 rebounds for the Bobcats (3-2).
Other Games of Note #12 Kansas State 77, Lehigh 58. The other Kansas school goes to 6-0. #13 Virginia Tech 75, St.Francis (Pa.) 37. #22 Buffalo 76, Marist 49. Buffalo (4-0) is the highest ranked MAC team since Ball State in December, 2001.
Georgetown 93, Campbell 85. Campbell's Chris Clemons, the nation's leading scorer, put some distance between himself and Antoine Davis with 45 points in the defeat. Clemons is a 5-9 senior guard who is also averaging 6.5 rebounds per game. Clemons is very good at getting to the free throw line, averaging almost 11 attempts per game and connecting on 83%.
Notre Dame 95, DePaul 70. Notre Dame (5-1) broke open a close game in the second half, handing DePaul (3-1) it's first defeat. West Virginia 88, Valparaiso 76. Valpo is 3-3. Houston 76, BYU 62. If it will alleviate your guilt over stealing Antoine Davis from them, Houston (4-0) is doing just fine. Providence 91, Iona 79.
Mid Major Wins of the Day Stony Brook 68, Rhode Island 58. Stony Brook is 5-1. The Citadel 84, South Florida 81. USF was unbeaten entering the game.

Couple of other games of note: Harvard has been playing the whole season without their two best players, and tonight they were without another starter. However, Tommy Amaker's crew got a nice road win against St. Mary's, 74-68.
Tubby Smith got his 600th career win as High Point defeated East Carolina, for a quality road win against an AAC school.

Hampton just beat Richmond by 20. The last place team in our subregional just destroyed an A-10 team!

Horizon Just when things were looking pretty good for the HL, league teams lost a couple games tonight that looked very winnable on the schedules.
Northern Illinois 92, Oakland 72. At the O'rena, OU (3-4) fell behind by 19 early, but battled back to within 1 at the break. NIU (4-2) then scored the first 7 points of the second half and steadily pulled away from there. The Huskies shot 66% for the game, including 61% from three. Xavier Hill-Maas had 22 points and 9 rebounds for OU, and freshman point guard Braden Norris had 18 points and 10 assists, including 5-5 from three. Norris has performed vrey well in the absence of Brailen Neely, and my sense is that, tonight's loss aside, Oakland is going to be better with Norris at the point than with the vereran Neely.
Fort Wayne 82, Cleveland State 79. Much like OU, Cleveland State fell behind by double digits early, closed to within 1 at halftime, got caught on the wrong side of an 8-1 run to start the second half, and then watched the Mastadons gradually expand the lead. Unlike OU, however, the Vikings made a run in the closing minutes, and tied it on a Stefan Kenic three with 16 seconds left. Fort Wayne (4-4) won it on a three by Matt Holba with 2 seconds left. Michigan freshman Seth Milner had 20 points and 10 rebounds for CSU (2-5), and Tyree Appleby added 20 points and 8 assists.
Non-Conference Titan Opponents Bowling Green 81, Drexel 71. Justin Turner had 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists for Bowling Green (4-3). Demajeo Wiggins added 16 points and 12 boards. Drexel, which led at halftime, drops to 3-3.
Towson 82, Loyola (Md.) 72. Andrew Kostecka had 30 for Loyola (2-5), which led by 5 at halftime.
Other Games I felt like listing Central Michigan 103, Siena Heights 75. We beat Siena Heights by a lot more last year. Central is 5-1.
Villanova 66, #14 Florida State 60. 'Nova, on the road to redemption. FSU's loss leaves 28 unbeaten teams. Oklahoma State 90, #19 LSU 77.
Northwestern 79, Utah 57.
Mid-Major Win of the Day Hampton 86, Richmond 66. Jermaine Marrow had 38 points as the Big South's Hampton--which started this week losing a pair of games in Calihan Hall as part of the Legends Tournament--crushed Richmond of the Atlantic 10.
And it's not a mid-major win, but a special note for William Carey, which beat Southern Miss, 78-72. William Carey is an NAIA school in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and entered the game at 2-4 (although that included 3 losses and 1 win to NAIA Top 25 teams). Last year Wm. Carey was 25-6.

Other games from 11/25 that caught my eye:
Charleston 78, Memphis 75. Looks like an upset at first glance, but Charleston was actually favored. Wichita State 90, Rice 61. Freshman guard Erik Stevenson scores 21 off the bench for the Shockers. Duquesne 83, UMass-Lowell 71. Eric Williams with 22 pts, 5 rebs, 4 steals.

No games involving Horizon teams today. Horizon ranks: 11th in the old RPI 15th in the new NCAA NET Rankings (I'm tellin' ya, the NCAA dumped RPI this year just to screw with us, man!) 17th in Sagarin 18th in Warren Nolan ELO 18th in Massey 22nd in Ken Pom.
(All of the computer rankings except RPI give a team a starting ranking based on last year and returning players; this slowly washes out so that by the end of the year only this year comes into play. But early in the year they will strongly penalize a team like Detroit or a conference like the HL, which were down last year).
Anyway, on to the Scoreboard.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents TCU 87, Eastern Michigan 69. The Emus opened the game with an 11-2 run over the first seven minutes, but it was all TCU from then on. Boubacar Toure had 20 points and 12 boards for Eastern (4-4), but James Thompson did a disappearing act, finishing with just 5 points and 4 rebounds. Kuoat Noi led the Horned Frogs (4-1) with 27 points.
California 78, Santa Clara 66. Still not clear if our game with Cal (2-3) will be rescheduled.
Other Games of Interest #1 Gonzaga 102, North Dakota State 60. Texas Southern 89, #18 Oregon 84. Texas Southern (2-4) , playing the brutal schedule Mike Davis left behind, pulled off its second upset, and this was a big one, beating Oregon on the coast. The Tigers came back from a 13 point second half deficit for the win. Trayvon Reed, the 7-0 center a lot of us hoped would come to Detroit with Coach Davis as a grad transfer, had 23 points on 9-9 floor shooting and 5-5 free throws. Bol Bol had 32 points and 10 rebounds for Oregon, but twern't enough to save the Ducks (4-2).
#25 Mississippi State 88, Alcorn State 65.
Alabama 78, Murray State 72. The Racers (3-1) fall from the unbeaten ranks. Boston College 68, Minnesota 56. So do the Golden Gophers (5-1). Nebraska 68, Clemson 66. Nebraska is 6-1.
Mid-Major Win of the Day Texas Southern, of course. Also... Wofford 81, South Carolina 61. Wofford (5-2) is really good. South Carolina (3-3) shut down Wofford's best player, Fletcher Magee, holding him to 8 points, 11 below his season average. But junior Nathan Hoover picked up the slack with 30 points. The Terriers, who never trailed, blew it open with a 12-1 spurt to start the second half. They've lost to UNC and Oklahoma.
