Horizon Oakland 87, Fairfield 86. Out in Connecticut, OU opened up an 18 point lead on a 33-6 run that straddled the half, then held on as Fairfield mounted a late comeback that pulled them to within a point with 55 seconds left. But neither team scored again. Credit Xavier Hill-Maas with 21 points for OU (4-5), with Kamari Newman adding 19. Fairfield is 2-7.
Drake 75, Milwaukee 61. Darius Roy had 19 but Milwaukee dropped to 2-7. Drake is off to a 6-1 start.
IUPUI 95, Indiana-Kokomo 64. IUPUI (6-3) pads the W-L record behind 18 points from Camron Justice.
Other Games of Interest #18 Iowa 98, Iowa State 84. Iowa (7-2) wins the in-state battle behind 26 points and 11 rebounds from Tyler Cook. Iowa State is also 7-2. Purdue 62, #23 Maryland 60. Carsen Edwards led Purdue (6-3) with 20 points.
Chicago State 84, Trinity 82. Hey, Chicago State (3-8) has won 3 in a row for the first time since March of 2013, though 2 were over non-D1 opponents, including this one.
Arizona 80, Utah Valley State 69. This one looked like the Mid-Major Win of the Day, but Arizona (7-2) outscored the Wolverines (yes, Utah Valley State's teams are called "Wolverines") 25-8 in a late run.

Friday, December 7.
Not much action on a Friday
A Couple Games of Note #6 Nevada 72, #20 Arizona State 66. Nevada (9-0) has beaten some solid opponents this year--USC, BYU, Loyola, Massachusetts--but this was it's first real major test, against a ranked opponent. The Wolfpack impressed, rallying from a 12 point halftime deficit to a 10 point lead, then holding off a rally that brought the Sun Devils (7-1) to within a point with two minutes left. Arizona State's loss left just 10 undefeated teams on the scene.
Massachusetts 79, Providence 78. Luwane Pipkins had 26 points for the Minutemen (6-4), including the game-winner with 10 seconds left. George Mason 66, James Madison 53. Anti-Federalists over the Federalists. St. Mary's 85, New Mexico 60. TCU 96, USC 61. Impressive performance by TCU (7-1) while visiting the 5-4 Trojans.

Can't believe Providence blew an 18 point half time lead in that loss to UMass.

There's a ton of good basketball on today, but my favorite Big East teams, Georgetown and DePaul, are breaking my heart in rivalry games.

Saturday, December 8
Horizon Another terrible, horrible, no-good, really bad night for the Horizon. 3 HL teams lost to MAC teams that Detroit has already played, if you want to try to use that as some kind of likely barometer for the Titans' conference chances.
Northeastern 92, Oakland 83. This looked a bit like a recent Titan box score. Northeastern shot 60% and outrebounded OU 37-22. The Huskies (5-5) led by 16 at halftime and held off a couple rallied that brought OU to within a point, the pulled away again late. Xavier Hill-Maas had 22 and Jaevin Cumberland 21 for Oakland (4-6).
Western Michigan 88, Youngstown State 77. Michael Flowers had 25 for Western (5-4). Garrett Covington had 15 for YSU (3-8).
Kent State, 83, Wright State 76. Jaylin Walker had 25 for Kent State (8-1). Horizon favorite Wright State (4-6) is just not playing well. Cole Gentry led the Raiders with 19.
Bowling Green 97, Green Bay 68. WTF? Green Bay, after playing Oregon tough and beating previously unbeaten Belmont, gets bowled over by Bowling Green. Detroiter Justin Turner had 25 points, and Demajeo Wiggins had 12 points and 19 rebounds for the Falcons (5-5). Wiggins has still had a double-double in every game except against Detroit. The Falcons hit 53% from the floor, 41% of their threes, and smoked Green Bay 51-29 on the boards. Sandy Cohen led Green Bay (5-4) with 16 points.
Eastern Kentucky 76, Northern Kentucky 74. Nick Mayo hit a pair of free throws to tie it with 46 seconds left, and a game winning jumper to win it with 2 seconds left. Mayo finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds for EKU (6-4). Drew McDonald had 23 for NKU (8-3).
Colorado 84, UIC 72. UIC tried to rally on the road, but McKinley Wright scored 10 straight points for Colorado and the Bison held off the Flames. Marcus Ottey had 22 for UIC (4-6), which is 0-5 on the road. Colorado is 7-1.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents #8 Auburn 82, Dayton 72. This was a blow-out, with Auburn (8-1) leading 51-32 at halftime. 23 turnovers spelled doom for the Flyers (5-4).
Eastern Michigan 105, Central State 53. EMU (5-5) rolls a D-II team.
Toledo 75, Marshall 74 (OT). Toledo ran up a 20-4 lead before the second TV timeout, and led by 18 at the half. Marshall (5-4) tied it with a 25-5 run midway through the second half, and opened a 5 point lead with a minute left. Jaelan Sanford hit a bucket with 45 seconds left and after a Marshall miss, hit a game-tying three with 5 seconds to go in regulation. The teams had 6 lead changes in the OT, with Toledo (9-1) winning it on a Marreon Jackson jumper with 3 seconds left.
Cincinnati 62, Xavier 47. The Titans play the X-Men (6-4) in 2 weeks.
Butler 95, Northern Illinois 68. Butler (7-2) shot 61% overall, and 17 of 32 from three.
Ohio U. 78, Radford 69. The Titans' next opponent beat a pretty good Radford team behind 19 points from Jason Carter. Both teams are 6-3.
Loyola (Md) 83, Binghamton 64. All 5 starters scored in double figures for Loyola (4-6).
Some Other Games That Caught My Eye #5 Michigan 89, South Carolina 78. South Carolina (4-5) was never closer than 9 in the final 16 minutes. Jordan Poole led the Wolverines (10-0) with 26.
#10 Michigan State 63, Florida 59. Kyle Ahrens scored Michigan State's final 7 points as MSU held off a series of Florida rallies in Gainesville. Those were Ahrens only points of the game. In the last two weeks, the Spartans have gone 5-1 against UCLA, Texas, Louisville, Rutgers, Iowa, and Florida, with the only loss in OT at Louisville. That should have them ready for more conference play (yes, I know two of those were B10 opponents).
Central Michigan 95, Southern Utah 86. Central is 8-2.
Seton Hall 84, #9 Kentucky 83 (OT). Junior Myles Powell had 28 points, including a game-winning three with 1 second left, for Seton Hall (6-3). Could be a big win for the Pirates come march. PJ Washington had 29 points and 13 rebounds for Kentucky (7-2). PJ looks like a "two and through" player.
#2 Kansas 63, New Mexico State 60. Once again Kansas rallied to win. New Mexico State is 7-2, Kansas 8-0. #3 Duke 91, Yale 58. Yale (4-3) is playing a pretty tough non-con schedule, with Cal, Memphis, Miami, and now Duke (9-1). #11 Florida State 79, Connecticut 71.
Marquette 74, #12 Wisconsin 69 (OT). A tense game in which the biggest lead for either team was 6 points. Markus Howard had 27 for Marquette (8-2). Ethan Happ had 34 points and 11 rebounds for Wisconsin (8-2).
Tulsa 47, #16 Kansas State 46. Not a halftime score. Another tight one, in which the biggest lead for either team over the last 30 minutes was 6 points. The last scoring of the game was a jumper by Tulsa's Martin Igbanu with almost 2 minutes left. K State (6-2) missed two desperate shots in the final 5 seconds. Tulsa (7-3) has won 13 straight at home.
#17 Buffalo 80, St. Bonaventure 62. Buffalo (9-0) keeps rolling--the Bulls led by 22 points at halftime, at St. Bonaventure. #21 Villanova 70, St. Joe's 58. #22 Mississippi State 82, Clemson 71. Lamar Peters had 28 for Ole Mississippi State (8-1). #23 Maryland 55, Loyola 41. Maryland pulled away in the second half. The Magic of last year's Final Four run has worn off quickly--Loyola is 5-5.
#24 Nebraska 94, Creighton 75. #25 Furman 74, South Carolina Upstate 60. Furman (10-0) had to rally from a halftime deficit against 2-8 Upstate.
UCLA 65, Notre Dame 62. The Bruins (7-2) blew a 14 point lead, but won it on a Kris Wilkes buzzer-beater in Los Angeles. What's wrong with college basketball scheduling? This was the first true road game for either team.
Indiana 68, Louisville 67. The Hoosiers (8-2) have won 3 straight, by a total of 5 points. Syracuse 72, Georgetown 71. Still seems that this should be a Big East game. Tyus Battle had 26 points, including the game-winner with 2 seconds left. Houston 63. Oklahoma 53. Houston (8-0) stays unbeaten. Northwestern 75, DePaul 68. DePaul (5-2) blew a 15 point lead. Rhode Island 79, Holy Cross 63. BYU 74, Utah 59. This is a big in-state rivalry, and BYU (7-3) was on a mission.
Mid Major Win of the Day Western Kentucky 78, Arkansas 77.

It is interesting to watch the uneven play of Kansas and the relative struggles of Kentucky so far this year. Both teams are trying to mesh talented newcomers together. Kansas has, I think, five transfers in their first year as active players for the Jayhawks. Kentucky, of course, added their usual class of five star freshmen, and also added grad transfer Travis Reid out of Stanford. Kansas's overall experience edge has them playing better while they work out the kinks, but UK still looks like a bunch of guys who just met trying to play together, and getting by on talent.
We might see an issue with Kansas later as some of the transfers are playing less and producing less than they did at their previous stops, particularly KJ Lawson. KJ averaged 33 minutes, 12 points, and 8 rebounds per game in the 2016-17 season at Memphis, but is down to eight minutes, 3 points, and 2 rebounds per game with the Jayhawks, with his numbers trending downward in recent games.
Kentucky needs to sort out their roles and make sure everyone is willing to play them. They need to do it quickly, as their next five games are Utah, North Carolina, Louisville, Alabama, and Texas A&M.

Some other thoughts on yesterday's results: Gotta give Kansas State credit for playing a true road game at Tulsa, even though they took a loss. UCF was expected to be the class of the AAC this year, but maybe it is Houston. LOL at "BYU was on a mission." It will be interesting to see if the Ramblers are going to be just a one year blip as a mid major success story, or if they will build on the momentum from last year. They seem to be well positioned. Respected coach, good recruiting base, and lots of money. I haven't checked, but I hope their attendance picked up this year after their tourney run.

Sunday, December 9 After getting its non-conference mark to almost .500 and posting some pretty respectable conference RPI and NCAA Net ratings, the Horizon went 4-21 against D1 opponents this week.
North Dakota 83, Milwaukee 72. North Dakota (5-5) shot 54% to topple Milwaukee (2-8). Darius Roy led the Panthers with 20 points.
Cleveland State 77, Notre Dame College 56. At least the Horizon can beat non-D1 teams. Stefan Kenic had 18 points and Tyree Appleby 12 points and 10 assists for CSU (4-7).
Other Games #7 Tennessee 76, #1 Gonzaga 73. Admiral Schofield (name, not rank) scored 25 points in the second half as Tennessee (7-1) upended Gonzaga (9-1) in Phoenix. Schofield scored Tennessee's last 11 points, including what turned out to be the game winner with 24 seconds left.
#4 Virginia 57, Virginia Commonwealth 49. That's five opponents Virginia (9-0) has held under 50 points. #6 Nevada 74, Grand Canyon 66. With under 3 minutes left and a 1 point lead, Nevada (10-0) scored 9 straight to close it out. #15 Virginia Tech 81, South Carolina State 44.
Texas 72, Purdue 68. Not Tennessee/Gonzaga, but a good game. Carsen Edwards had 40 points for Purdue (6-4), but needed at least 4 more. Alabama 76, Arizona 73. St. Louis 65, Oregon State 61. Jevon Bess had 24 for the Billikens (7-2). St. John's 89, Princeton 74. Still unranked, St. John's is now 9-0. Columbia 74, Iona 71. Iona is working on a string of 9 consecutive 20-win seasons and three straight NCAA bids, but they're just 2-6 so far this year.
Mid Major Win of the Day Montana State 95, Washington State 90. Montana State, just 2-6 entering the game, knocked off Washington State (5-3), which had been 5-0 at home. Harald Frey, a junior guard from Norway (Norway?!) sparked the upset with 30 points and 10 assists, both career highs. He also had 6 rebounds.
Gonzaga's loss leaves 9 unbeaten teams. Five--La Salle, Monmouth, Coppin State, Mt. St. Mary's, and Alabama A&M---are winless, although another 11 have yet to beat a D1 opponent.

Tuesday, December 11 Things still quiet, as most schools avoid heavy scheduling around finals.
Horizon Green Bay 112, Wisconsin Stout 46. Downing a little Stout helped Green Bay (6-4) forget about its embarrassing 29 point loss to Bowling Green on Saturday. Seven Phoenix scored in double figures, led by Sandy Cohen with 17.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Maryland 94, Loyola (Md) 71. What did you expect, a Loyola win? Andrew Kostecka had 18 points in the Greyhounds' cause.
Other Games Penn 78, #17 Villanova 75. Needless to say, this is also the mid-major win of the day. Penn is 9-2.
#23 Furman 77, Charleston Southern 69. The Paladins (11-0) have the nation's best record. Furman's Jeff Lyons, who scored 54 points in a game earlier this year, had 0 tonight. I wonder if any other player has ever had both 50 point and 0 point games in a season.
South Dakota State 139, Savannah State 72. The Jackrabbits (9-3) had the most points of any team in a game since Butler dropped 144 on the Citadel in November, 2015.
NJIT 53, Fordham 50. Fordham has sandwiched a win over Rutgers between losses to Maine and NJIT in its last three games. Both schools are off to good starts against weak schedules, with Fordham at 7-3 and NJIT at 9-2.

Savannah State made three pointers on their first three possessions of the game, and still trailed 10-9. South Dakota State made 23 of 34 three point shots in the game. Their star, Mike Daum, had 37 points and 17 rebounds. Daum is now third in the nation--after Campbell's Chris Clemons and our Antoine--in scoring at 26.2 ppg. He averaged 23.9 last year and 25.1 as a sophomore. He's also 10th in the nation in rebounding at 10.8 per game.

Horizon IUPUI 116, Indiana-Northwest 79. IUPUI (7-4) had fun, and Jaylen Minnett had the most fun, with 28 points.
Titan Non-Conference Opponents Temple 65, Massachusetts 63. Temple (8-2) used a 16-2 run early in the second half to wipe out a 13 point deficit, then held off UMass (6-5) down the stretch. Shiz Alston led the Owls with 31 points.
Other Games #11 Texas Tech 79, Northwestern (La.) State 44. Chris Beard is a helluva coach, and Tech is 9-0. #24 Houston 82, LSU 76. Houston trailed by 10 at halftime, and then gave up 5 quick points to LSU to start the second half But a long, slow comeback kept the Cougars unbeaten.
Louisville 72, Lipscomb 68. Lipscomb (7-3) almost pulled it off, rallying from 12 down in the second half to tie, and closing to within 2 points in the final minute. DePaul 104, Chicago State 70. Murray State 80, Southern Illinois 52. Ja Morant scored 23 points, dished off 13 assists, and pulled down five rebounds as Murray State (6-1) rolled the Salukis (7-4).
