Does a non-scholarship player have to sit a year if he transfers? My understanding is that for football, baseball, and basketball (I assume that's what you're interested in) you have to sit a year unless both a) you have never had an athletic scholarship at the school you are attending, and b) you were never a "recruited athlete" by that school. A recruited athlete is anyone who 1) was issued a letter of intent by the school (even if he didn't sign it); b) took an official visit to a school; c) had an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospect or the prospect's parents; or d) had a telephone, texting, mail or email contact, initiated by the school, with the prospect, the prospect's relatives or legal guardians on more than one occasion. I think that's right, though I'm not 100% sure. That means most walk ons --certainly preferred walk ons, will have to sit. But there may be some true walk-ons--guys who answer the call for tryouts--who would not have to sit.
