Good luck to Josh! I'd suspect he'll need to pass JJ and move into 1st on the steals list if we want to win tonight.

Good luck to Josh! I'd suspect he'll need to pass JJ and move into 1st on the steals list if we want to win tonight. Well, he caught JJ for 21st spot on the Titans' all-time scoring list, and moved into second place on steals. I'm not quite sure two more steals would have made the difference tonight, though.

I was suggesting we needed a big game from Josh in order to have a chance to win this one. Kudos to him for moving up the lists, but that wasn't exactly the "big game" that I had in mind. 😉 Happy to see Josh continue to perform though. His shooting numbers remain at career high levels to this point. Add to that the excellent defensive effort he gives and his ability to distribute the ball while minimizing turnovers. He's been an excellent Titan to watch.

Congratulations to Josh, whose two steals tonight tied him with Jerry Davis for the Titans' all-time lead, with 195. Steals have only been an official stat since 1976, so a lot of Titan greats aren't included. Still, that over 40 years of hoops--pretty impressive. Davis was a smooth forward who joined the team at the tail end of the Vitale/Gaines era, playing from the 1979 through 1982 seasons. He and Joe Kopicki were a nice 1-2 punch at forward. Smokey Gaines was ecstatic when he signed Davis, whom I believe he said could be the greatest Titan player ever. Though a 4 year starter, Davis plateaued early and wasn't really much better as a senior than as a freshman.
By making 7 of 8 free throws tonight and 10 of his last 11 over two games, Josh again edged ahead of big Gerald Smith, a 7-0 center on the 1971 to 1973 teams, for 10th on the Titans' list for career free throw percentage. Not many 7 footers shoot free throws like Gerald Smith.
Josh needs just 8 points on Saturday to pass up Brian Humes for 20th on the Titans' all-time scoring list. Humes, a forward, played from the 1984 through 1987 seasons. He was a 2nd team All-MCC selection in 1986, when he averaged 14.1 ppg and made 57% of his field goal attempts. He averaged 17.6 points as a senior but was passed over for all-conference after missing several games with an injury.
Josh is currently 4th on the Titans' list for career three pointers, but probably won't pass Duane Kelley until the IUPUI or UIC game.

Josh indeed became the Titans' all-time leader in steals yesterday, and passed Brian Hume to enter the Titans' top 20 all-time in scoring. Josh should move up further against Oakland. He needs 4 points to pass Chase Simon, and a big night (21 points) to catch Juwan Howard. He needs two three-pointers to tie Dwayne Kelley for third on the Titans' all-time list.

Josh moved past Dwayne Kelley into 3rd on the Titans list for career 3 pointers. He'll need a couple big games or a long HL tournament run to have a chance to catch #2 Desmond Ferguson.
Josh moved past Juwan Howard and Joe Kopicki into 17th on the Titan all-time total points list. He needs 14 to catch Terrell Riggs, and 27 to pass Dorie Murrey and move into 15th.

Josh is also clinging to the #10 spot on the Titans' career free throw percentage list, just ahead of Gerald Smith, the big center from the early 1970s. Josh is at 76.7%, to Smith's 76.5%.

So, where did he end up?
It would seem that some misses from the line over the last two games knocked him out of the FT% top 10. However, it was an impressive career nonetheless. Congrats to Josh and I wish him well. He was a fantastic Titan... as was Gerald. It was appropriate to put those two on the program for senior night.

Smith - 76.47% FT% Josh - 76.35% FT% If one of those FT's had not bounced out last night, he'd have finished his career at 76.63%. All-time steal leader with 201. #3 career in 3-point FG's with 233. #2 in career 3-point FG attempts with 644. And #4 in all-time fouls committed with 315 - knocking John Long out from the #10 spot. Josh finished the season with three strong games. He leaves a good legacy. Gerald made some great improvements this year. It's too bad his 2nd and 3rd years were hampered by injuries. But I'm glad he finally gave us some strong games this season. Coach Davis said that he wishes that he had both players for another year.

And Josh passed Dorie Murrey to rank #15 in scoring on the all-time Titan list. He was a member of the conference all-freshman squad in 2016, and a conference Player of the Week this year. A great player? Not at all. But a good player who showed up every game for 4 years (8th on list for all-time games played), and who was capable of a few great games? Definitely. We'll miss you, Josh.

And a little aside: the Titans' all-time free throw percentage is based on a minimum of 150 career attempts. Antoine finished this year with 147 attempts, shooting 85.7%. So our old friend Gerald will fall out of the top 10 early next year, probably in the season opener. Gerald, if you're out there, enjoy the limelight!
