The Battle for 8th place in the Horizon is joined! Actually, there's a lot going on in this game.
The Titans will be trying to get themselves in order and regain some positive feeling. Too many bad losses, and too much griping about refs and such lately. No one is feeling good. We need to correct that before the conference tournament. And Titans can still finish as high as 5th in the HL. Finishing 5th or 6th creates, I think, a meaningfully easier first round match up. Then there's the great Antoine Davis, whose first three pointer will tie Steph Curry's NCAA freshman record. Also on the individual level, Josh McFolley keeps working up the Titan all-time charts. 14 points will move Josh past Juwan Howard and Joe Kopicki and into 17th on the Titans' all-time scoring list. Josh's first 3 pointer will move him past Dwayne Kelley and into third on the Titans all-time list for career threes. Meanwhile, on the visitors' side, IUPUI really does have a very realistic shot at finishing 3rd in the HL if they can sweep this week in Detroit. But if they get swept, they end up in the #7 or, more likely, #8 spot.
The Jags come in at 16-13 overall, 8-8 in conference, 1 game up on Detroit. They're just 3-9 on the road this year, 2-5 in league road games. They last won on the road on January 4, beating UIC 66-64. I hope I haven't just jinxed the Titans. They beat the Titans soundly, 80-65, in Indianapolis, in a game the Titans played without Antoine Davis. Willie Isiani, who probably won't play this weekend, had 20 in that defeat, and Josh McFolley 19. The Jaguars, who have been one of the weaker 3 point shooting teams in the league all year, shredded the Titans from behind the arc. Camron Justice and Jaylen Minnett each knocked down 5 threes and IUPUI shot 48% from deep and 51% overall.
Not much has changed with IUPUI since January, except that Nick Rogers, a regular rotation player for the past two years and the guy who hit the Jags' game-winner at Boston College earlier this year, has suddenly all but disappeared from the roster, playing just 10 minutes in the Jaguars last 3 games. Also disappearing of late is freshman Jack Hansen, who had his big game of the year against the Titans with 15 points. He's not played in the last two games, and played just 30 minutes in the 5 prior games.
IUPUI has used a very consistent starting rotation this year, consisting of Justice, Grant Weatherford, D.J. McCall, Elijah Goss, and Evan Hall. However, Goss missed the games two week-ends ago with a minor injury, and though he's been back, they left his replacement, graduate senior Ahmed Ismail, in the starting lineup last weekend. Justice, and Minnett off the bench, are the guys you can't leave open along the arc. Rogers is a threat from deep, too, and they may go to him if they're struggling early. Look for Weatherford to draw Antoine when IUPUI is on defense.
IUPUI is a veteran team, and a very good rebounding team. They've got good inside scoring, and Justice is an effective scorer who can drive to the hoop and knock down the three. We need Curry and Blackshear to step up neutralize their bigs, and we have to do a better job defending the perimeter than we did in Indy. Certainly the presence of Antoine won't hurt. A loss relegates the Titans to a 7th, or, more likely, 8th place finish.
Let's go Titans.
