NCAA Men's BB Rules Committee meets this week in Indianapolis.
1. Will the free throw be widened from 12 feet to 16 feet?
This proposal was voted down by the Men's BB Competition Committee last month at the Final Four.
2. Will the 3-point line be moved out to conform with FIBA?
The new distance would be 22'1 and 3/4" but only 21' 7 and 7/8" in the corners. This was approved by the Competition Committee. The current distance is 20'9".
3. Moving to 4 quarters.
Not approved by Competition Committee.
There are a total of 54 rules changes to be voted on by the Rules Committee.
In scheduling, the NCAA is looking to scale back games. Two proposals were selected by the Oversight Committee to be sent to all member schools for feedback.
The two concepts on which the committee will seek member feedback are:
1. Teams can schedule 28 regular-season games plus one multiple-team event that does not exceed three games or schedule a total of 29 games without competing in a multiple-team event.
2. Teams can schedule 28 regular-season games, plus a multiple-team event that does not exceed three games; schedule 29 games, plus a multiple-team event that does not exceed two games; or schedule a total of 29 games without participating in a multiple-team event. The committee amended this option from its previous form, reducing the total number of games in a season that does not include participation in a multiple-team event from 30 to 29.
With all power conferences moving towards more conference games and less non-conference games, both of these proposals would reduce the number of chances a mid-major team gets to play a power 6 conference school. This is even more restricted given the move ofthe power conferences to play challenges against other power conferences instead of scheduling more non-conference games. These proposals are the most likely reason why the HL and the Summit agreed to their inter-conference challenge in order to guarantee games against D-1 opponents in their members' non-conference schedules.
