Calipari picked up a communications degree at Kentucky and I read somewhere that he was pre-marketing. He has two years of eligibility remaining and seems like a good fit for an MBA, one of Detroit Mercy’s stronger academic programs. “His definition of a true hero is anyone who is a servant leader” aligns with the Jesuit/Mercy framework. I know our Detroit location has issues, but I’ve spent some time in the Norfolk area and think the Motor City has more to offer.

It is interesting that Calipari is considering Hampton, an HBCU. There’s been some nice stories in recent years about white players attending HBCUs. We could use more stuff like that considering racial tensions right now. I can’t find the link now, but I remember one of the white players at Coppin State last year on the MBB team saying it was a positive experience but it can be burdensome constantly being asked why he decided to attend an HBCU.

I assume he was in a pre-business curriculum thinking about a concentration in marketing.

Quotes from Coach John Calipari in the article tweeted by Dick Vitale.
“At the end of the year, each of our players has an opportunity to explore their options and find out what opportunities they have,” John Calipari said. “I didn’t believe Brad should be treated any different. I’m proud of the fact that he graduated in three years and gave himself this opportunity to play the next two seasons either here or at another university. He’s worked really hard and he’s gained the respect of our players because of his work ethic, his drive, his commitment to the game and his skills, so he’s had my full support throughout this process.
“I did not attend any visits with him because I wanted this to be about him and his decision. He came to Kentucky understanding it would be hard to earn minutes because of the level of players here, but he also knew it was his best opportunity to get better every day and to push himself. He always said he may go into coaching one day, which is one of the reasons he decided to come to Kentucky. Now he’s doing what’s best for him and hoping to benefit from the work he’s put in to where he has the opportunity to earn minutes and to play with other really good players and for a good coach.
“That place will be Detroit Mercy with head coach Mike Davis. I’ve coached against Mike and know him well. I have great respect for him as a coach and as a leader of young people.
“I know Brad leaves here with great feelings for our fans and for how he’s been treated, and Ellen and I truly appreciate how he’s been supported. It’s not easy being the coach’s son, especially at a place like Kentucky, but our fans really embraced him. I’m really looking forward to following Brad’s career at Detroit. Proud of you, son.”
Brad Calipari scored 11 points in his two on-court seasons at Kentucky with five rebounds, two assists and a block. A marksman from behind the arc, Calipari averaged 14.3 points, 6.5 assists and 3.3 rebounds a game in four games during an international basketball trip with Global Sports Academy in Croatia in 2017 and 13.2 points and 7.0 assists a game in four games Global Sports Academy to Europe in 2018.
Calipari is a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member and graduated in May – in just three seasons – with a degree in communication.
The 6-foot guard averaged 15.3 points, 3.6 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game as a senior at the MacDuffie School (Granby, Massachusetts). He was a 1,000-point scorer in high school.
The Titans are led by Davis, who is entering his second season with the program. Davis previously coached at Indiana, where he led the Hoosiers to the 2002 national championship game, and Texas Southern, where he spent six seasons building the Tigers into a perennial power in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with four NCAA Tournament appearances.
Note: Calipari played at the same prep school, MacDuffie, as Malik Eichler.

Calipari does not have a lock on playing time here. He will have to prove himself against BJ Maxwell, Alonde LeGrande, Dwayne Rose, Jamal Pink, and, even Darryl Riley. As Commissioner, I believe, pointed out about BJ Maxwell, he had the 11th best KenPom offense efficiency rating in the nation last year, producing 129.8 points for every 100 possessions on offense with a 43.8% 3 point shooting rate. Calipari brings age, maturity, drive to succeed, and the winning philosophy from national powerhouse Kentucky. Those intangibles are important for the team. Can he win PT from the other guys who will be fighting for their moments, too?
However, his video and his poster with Antoine together likely got over 250K views on Twitter. The video got 150K views alone. He has raised our national profile again - with much more efficiency than all of last year's university-wide academic success accomplished. This is why it will be very important to get behind and remain behind this year's team. We are building a solid foundation upon which to take a step to the top of the HL and move up the national rankings.
And, from what I hear, the university's front office finally is beginning to see that a strong men's BB team can drive up applications and help the university build upon its initial steps forward as an institution.

My guess is that a large number of those viewing the poster and video are young men at or near college age, and middle-aged dads with kids at or near college age, who had either never before heard of UD or had forgotten about it. Let's suppose that they result in just 1 student ultimately deciding to attend the university with a net revenue for tuition and room and board (after tuition discounting) of just $25,000 per year (total cost of attending UD for a year, including room and board, is over $41,000). That's $100,000 in revenue over four years. (Yes, I realize that oversimplifies it, I'm making a general point here).

Great points gentlemen. The cumulative impact of Coach Davis' hire a year ago, AD's frosh year, and now some higher profile (in name) recruits with Rose and Calipari provides certainly has increased exposure to the program significantly from where it was. These are all great building blocks, and the next step is to start winning on the hardwood.
I've got to believe the intangible of Coach Davis' background and reputation across the NCAA landscape is a bonus for many ways - credibility, professional respect, etc.
I'm enjoying the Davis regime thus far. Building blocks slowly but surely to be better program...

I hope that the improvements on the roster this year translate to more wins and more excitement, which will translate to more butts in the seats, which will translate into more coverage and improved recruiting, which will translate to more donations to UDM to improve facilities and other (more) sports ....
I hope that Coach Davis sticks around long enough to create stability in the program, establishes a recruiting pipeline, send coaches to other programs, lines up a successor coach ... .

I friend of mine who I played high school basketball with is a HUGE Kentucky fan. He likes the pick up for Detroit. Tells me that BC is a knock down shooter and has a very high basketball IQ.

I've noticed several people around the web suggest that we are likely to get a guarantee game at Kentucky now. I'm not sure--does Calipari want to play against his son? Does Brad want to play against Kentucky, a team I honestly do think he loves? I'd take the game if Calipari wants to give it to us, but I question if that's the case.
