Starting this thread to share opinions on what should happen with the Lady Titans program going forward. (Also wanted to get the topic out of the Autumn R thread.) I thought the hire of Coach Scott was a good move back when it happened, and the he got off to a fast start, with two straight winning seasons right off the bat. The run to the HL title game in 2017 was a lot of fun and I had high hopes for the future. The bottom has kind of fallen out since then, and we just concluded a 3-27, 3-15 season. I like Coach Scott and really wished for his success. He has a lot of energy, seems to work hard, and is great with the community, fans, and alumni. My niece attended the Lady Titans basketball camp this year, and she benefitted from it athletically and personally, as she made good friends and enjoyed the time she had with Coach Scott as his staff. This past season, the roster was very young, and several of the freshman players looked good. However, it is hard to overlook the won/loss record. I don't know if the Titans are in the position to make a change, don't know what Scott's contract status is, and don't know what candidates they could choose from, but it would seem as if a change at the helm might be coming. detroittitans.com/sports/womens-basketball/schedule

I agree that Coach Scott is a great guy and communicator, and he also seems to be interested in Program Building. Although he has had some bad breaks (injuries, personal issues that have sidetracked key players, etc.) in the end he has not been able to recruit effectively, and he has lost a few key players to transferring out. His teams are always too small and too slow to defend and rebound properly. He won with Autumn's players, not his own. In the end, he must be held accountable for his woeful record.

The two best players on the team last year were Freshmen and the minute the season was over they transferred out. The year before he lost his two best Freshmen, and if I remember correctly a Soph. was the leading the team in scoring and left the team before the season ended. There are a ton of red flags here.

Although you are correct, UP, that there are red flags (the primary one being his W-L record the last 3 years) I must state for the record that some of the players he "lost" were no fault of his own: i.e. injuries, personal issues, death in the family, etc. etc.

The players I'm thinking of are Bellman, Bicknell, Anna M. and and I think the gal that transferred as a Soph. was Tobias. I might have the spellings wrong. I think Big Chuck would be well informed on the state of the women's program. I personally think he is just another really bad Vowels hire.

There was a 3-year recruiting hole in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 recruiting classes. Did any of his players transfer to another D-1 school? I recall that Tobel went to Rochester. Another player went to Saginaw Valley State; and, I think that Bellman went to Findlay. That suggests that the former recruiting coordinator was not evaluating basketball talent competently. She left in the Spring of 2018.
The new recruiting coordinator helped bring in this year's new players. They were more competitive in more HL games than in the recent past; and, they did beat one team not named UIC. But they still lost 15 of 18 games. We have a team that may have increased its overall talent, but remains far away from success on an experience basis. It would not surprise me that we hire a new coach for the team. Too bad when you see a good person and a good communicator still fail to produce W's in the HL.

No word on Coach Scott. Does it mean that he will stay? Not necessarily.......AD Vowels acts very slowly when dismissing a coach as shown with the McCallum and Alexander firings. Both of those occurred in the last week of March.

Bummer. At least it’s a hot economy, especially in the sports world. I’m sure he will have no problem finding a new gig.

I wish nothing but the best of luck to Coach Scott and his staff. They are a great group of people who worked hard and represented the university well. Unfortunately he did not win enough. This year's team started with a group of young ladies that were young and had little continuity from the previous season(s). Because of non-basketball and non-academic events by the end of the season they had only two players who were on the team last year. As a result with only one senior they had a challenging year.
Overcoming those events with a completive non-conference schedule and with a HL that is significantly stronger for Women's Basketball then Men's basketball (as demonstrated by much higher NCAA seedings) was an almost impossible task. Alas, it did not happen. Nevertheless, the character and tenacity displayed by this team was heartening. They played for Coach Scott right up to the end.
We have some great ladies on the team. We have some players that will be competitive in the HL and a foundation to build on. Let's thank Coach Scott and his staff for that. Hopefully, we can retain this group through the changeover and keep the talented recruits that have signed. It was a pleasure getting to know all of them and watching them grow. I hope to see all of them next year and after. I hope every one of them stays and graduates with the great education this University has to offer.
I know Coach Scott will land on his feet. The team made great strides as the year progressed as they struggled to overcome the obstacles then encountered. By the end of the year they were able to play with most teams in the league. The losing over the season made it tough to close out games as the season wore on. The early loses become a mental albatross late in the game as the men found out also.
Thanks for everything Coach. I am sure you will build on the experiences gained here to be a success in your future gigs.

From Bernard Scott on Twitter:
"Tomorrow will make 3 weeks since my contract was not renewed. I have had time to self evaluate and think about the things I wish I would have done better. I think i might go live tomorrow to discuss those things. Who knows it might help someone in the same position."
He plans to go live 12:30 pm tomorrow, not sure what platform.
