I agree that switching for athletics only is a much more obtainable goal. But, I fear that switching for athletics only will only further increase the confusion. I also feel that U of Detroit is more marketable for the university in general, not just athletics (I acknowledge that may not be true for nursing & health, but my opinion is let’s find out and start a campaign to let all alumni weigh in). It would be very helpful to have the survey results from 4 years ago. Does anyone know if the university ever shared those survey results? If not, one of the first objectives of our campaign will be to ask university leadership to make the results accessible to all alumni. Also, to be clear, we are hoping for a big tent. We’d like alumni that have no interest in athletics to sign our petition. I know of many alumni that don’t care about athletics but are sick of people asking if Detroit Mercy is the same as U of D. We also hope that when campus opens this fall, that current students will take interest in this campaign. They are encouraged to voice their opinions and sign the petition as well. The branding study’s report and survey results were kept internal.

Probably because they got an overwhelming response they didn’t like.

Probably because they got an overwhelming response they didn’t like. The whole thing was a waste of time and money. It looks like they were always going to emphasize the Mercy part.

FWIW, there is an article in today’s printed Detroit Free Press about the University’s plans for reopening the campus for the 2020-21 academic year. In the headline, the school is referred to as “UD-Mercy.” In the first paragraph the full name is hyphenated: “University of Detroit-Mercy.” Throughout the remainder of the article it’s “UDM.” This is from our local newspaper three years after the rebrand rollout that emphasized the need for consistent use of “Detroit Mercy” in branding. Further evidence that despite efforts by the University the current branding approach hasn’t caught on and by all indications is destined for continued failure. The online story pretty much the same, but it’s the hyphenated “University of Detroit-Mercy” in the story’s headline: www.freep.com/story/news/education/2020/05/20/university-detroit-mercy-fall-semester/5232439002/

In its Spring 2020 issue of Impact of Giving, the university notes three projects "coming soon" to the McNichols campus. They are: 1) the building plans already announced for the new student center, dorms, and replacing the Fisher Admin building; 2) a new communications studies center; and, 3) the Road to a Championship plan for athletics.
The section for the new athletics plan is right in the middle of the two-page spread. This is what the university wrote to all of its donors:
This plan has the full support of the Board of Trustees and the university president. Changes are coming to many things in athletics over the next several years.
Also, regarding branding, note the reference to becoming a model to other Jesuit institutions.

Yes, soon Gonzaga, Georgetown, Marquette, Xavier, St. Louis, San Francisco, Loyola, Boston College, etc., will be sending teams to our town to study the University’s unique branding approach that reflects our Jesuit heritage, as well as learn about the methodology we employ to achieve excellence in athletics.

Rogobob77 - Jeeeesh!!!!!! Everything (including this thread) is not about branding. The university is committed to making the men's basketball team a successful on-court model for other Jesuit institutions. Got it? Shouldn't you want that to happen? Isn't the point of our collective fan interest that we want the team to win more games each year and do that almost every year? And, if you want the branding to change, shouldn't you see this focus upon Jesuit institutions as the first step towards a better brand? A chink in the armor that maybe the mole's petition could exploit? A tacit acknowledgment that, at least in athletics, the brand is Jesuit? And Jesuit means Detroit and U of D?

It’s time for me to fess up. Some of you might want to sit down for this because it might be shocking and unbelievable. I and Tacitus are one in the same. Ptc? I’ve never spoken to him directly through direct messages or anything else.
As I mentioned days ago, I’m considering starting a campaign to urge the trustees and university leadership to explore renaming the university the University of Detroit. As of now, I have two alumni who frequent this board working on things with me (one of them is willing to put his name on this with me, the other is not at present moment). We have a good draft of a petition and some social media accounts set up should we decide to move forward. I’m not sure if this will get off the ground or not to be honest. We could use more help - all alumni are welcome to join us - just DM me.
